The thing for the level designer you have to balance three things, Lore/plot, contrast/visibility and gampelay convenience. And more than often with the 'professional' campaign the former will take a backseat for the two later. Blue is often the 'goog guy' color so in a campaign where youcontrol only a couple of units for a long time it sort of make sense to use it for the 'hero' unit. Besides so many things have retconned or ignored from Wc 2 at this point that color code was the least, really.

It also did that bridge with the lore : with Admiral Proudmoore's death this introduced how Vanilla was meant to be started... Horde vs Alliance, exactly the same way Warcraft RTS series begun with Orcs and Humans instead.

When I was a kid, I didn't think about how many dreadlords there are, but I thought that they all have different colored wings. That's how I remembered the "brothers" from RoC and the other brothers from TFT. The ones in RoC were: Anetheron-Orange, Tichondrius-Red, Blue...I can't remember. I checked now, it's Mephistroth. And I like how out of all of them, ONLY MEPHISTROTH KEPT HIS BLUE COLOR in WoW! And also Mal'Ganis was green. In TFT, we get Balnazzar-purple, Varimathras-red, Detheroc-green. And that's all the dreadlord bros! xD

The main annoyances with the Frozen Throne for me was I would've loved for the naga to be able to be used in the custom games. I love their look and how they play. Another was how a lot of the larger maps weren't well balanced for more than two teams, only two teams or ffa. I love the game anyway, I've spent way too much time on it. Very cool series as well, I cheated my way through the campaign because I just wanted to see the story and I find the custom games more enjoyable (I always have and always will, although the campaign does tease those units and the naga who are unusable in the custom games which really annoys me as well). For someone who did cheat their way through, it's great to see what I missed. Also in the Legacy of The Damned, I think first or second mission, the one where you destroy all the villages to stop the humans getting into the valley, use the reveal map cheat and on the very west side of the map, you see the miniature Ice Crown Frozen Throne with Ner Zhul used for the vision Arthas has. I thought it was pretty cool to see how the map makers used the space in the map. Great video!

Same on colours, I always liked knowing what clan or kingdom was involved in WC2, and was a bit confused at first when Lordaeron was using blue in WC3 when they were white before. Also, I think the reason Timmy's brothers aren't there is because we killed them all back in Scourge of Lordaeron.

I've always had a love for purple since it was the national color of Dalaran so I get you. Almost tore my wc2 manual to shreds looking it over growing up. I'm aware I'm late to the party, but judging by the location where the Thunder Phoenixes are placed, my guess would be that they're not named "Thunder" due to them having a lightning properties but rather are named after the location they are placed in - the location itself looks really familiar to Thunder Ridge in Durotar. But it does make little to no sense that they are placed there, and have no lightning properties.

I absolutely agree with you on the player color rant! I learned to identify all the kingdoms and clans by their colors too. I feel the same way about how the Protoss use blue mostly in Starcraft when its supposed to represent Raynor. I guess we can go back to Warcraft 2 for that, since each side had their own reason for sharing a color. Both the Alliance and the Horde had a red faction (Stromgarde and Blackrock). So in Warcraft 3 for each faction the color blue represents Lordaeron, Tyrande's Sentinels, Sylvanis' Forsaken, and Rexxar's superfriends.

Of course a new Warcraft RTS is needed, not only would it breathe new life into competitive gaming but also breathe new life into Warcraft. I know it could easily make it's way into the E-Sports scene, it is such a tactical and intense game. I think if marketed more towards online competitive play it would be very successful, like starcraft 2 it will have a built in fan base who would be rearing to play it. I think staying away from the 'cartooney' style of World of Warcraft and leaning more towards Diablo 2 style or Diablo 3 art style would definitely be a big hit in this day and age. Just thinking about new races, maps, jungle enemies or 'creeps' as we used to say and just everything about it gets me excited to play it. Many of the great RTS's of today got their start in Warcraft 4, for instance DOTA started as a Warcraft 3 custom game. Adding some of those facts into the marketing might help attract those who have never played it or heard of it. All in all it would be so amazing to have a new Warcraft RTS!!!! Gotta get that GOSU MICRO :)

For the color blue reason, maybe because blue resembles friendliness, kindness, and calmness. So you know which color to control. On the other hand, red resembles enemy. And the settings and theme is on Orchish Base, which will look better on red. So, using red won't be wise as blue, because makes confusion on which one NPC Orchish Horde, and which one ours. (Trust me, Orchish buildings that wasn't red is not really appealing, especially when the building is even bigger than it used to, maybe for realism. So, I thought the dev was on their hard decision between support the atmosphere of the Orchish building or the Rexxar character) But, I like red more, so it doesn't matter. Lol Maybe because Rexxar is also Ogre Orc, that it really suits red for him to be played. Just like Arthas and Jaina suits blue more.

blue is most likely so you can see who you are more easily appart from the horde. purple = undead, Orange=too close to red? and so on. plus blue has always been friendly and red has been seen as enemy in most strategy games of that time.

If I wanted that, I'd turn allied colors on! :) You're probably right though. Especially since they change to different colors when they sit out of a level, like the one with Samuro.

Btw … a weird coincidence … the penguin sound is also used in Half Life 2 along the coast levels as an ambient sound for seagulls. o_O

I watched all your easter egg vids, thanks for that. a little blast from the past plus I missed alot of stuff because I was in my teens when I played wc3 and such a noob in reg melee games.

Drat, if I had known someone has added the voices to the demo campaign, I wouldn't have bothered to make it myself for my cutscene series... :-/

Alicia and Little Timmy may have survived Lordaeron, but I wonder if they survived the mana bomb...

I'd wager they're blue because the environments are overwhelmingly orange or light brown. Blue would be one of the most accessible, highest contrast options there. Blizz has some problematic color choices for accessibility through the single player game, but this one I think is correct.
