Been looking for this game off and on for over 20 years. My parents used to play it when I was a kid - they simply called it "the girl in the forest" 😅

I also racked my brains for years trying to remember this game. I used to play it at a seven eleven by my father's best friend's house and never got past the second level.

An NES port was developed and planned to be published by American Sammy under the name Pyross. As with the arcade version and most other released ports, the NES port would contain 5 levels, including a castle in ruins, a dark forest and a volcano. Gameplay is very similar to Ghosts n' Goblins, where you attack enemies using daggers, magic spells and such. You can also spend currency in shops to upgrade or acquire new weapons and magic spells. While a 8-bit version of Wardner was released in Japan, it was a different game from this canned one. Pyross was shown a few gaming magazine previews (such as in EGM 13), its American box-art was already designed and they even had an advertisement flyer ready, with the addition of desert themed naming scheme for the heroes and villians that likely would have been exclusive to the manual, but in the end, the game just vanished forever. It was shown a few times in gaming magazines previews. Its American box-art was already designed and they even had an advertisement flyer ready. The article I saw this in back of box follows the information about the game: “Princess Pudding has been captured, and it’s up to the dashing prince to rescue her. But this is no mere walk in the woods! He must challenge hordes of vile creatures, avoid deadly traps, and master the weapons of fire before time runs out! Shall the beloved princess be crystalized by the forces of darkness, or will Ala Mode make things too hot for evil to handle?” This game was announced in issue #13 of EGM magazine with the following blurb: “Take on a quest through a foreign and dangerous country. Cross over rivers of fire while watching out for the hidden treasure of gold which are hidden along the way. The enemy are fast, strong and numerous as you get into the quest.” Despite being showcased to the public during the Summer CES 1990, this version of the game was cancelled for unknown reasons, and no prototypes has surfaced yet. The NES port was announced at the CES in Summer 1990 by American Sammy, who planned/scheduled to release in early 1991, and would have been licensed by Nintendo for play on the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was decently advertised and even had a VidPro card, implying the game was finished and ready for pre-orders. The game was submitted to Nintendo of America on February 1st, 1991 and got successfully approved for manufacture as indicated in the leaked Nintendo Lot Check spreadsheets as NES-8P-USA PYROSS. While Tatsujin, a company formed from Toaplan alumni, acquired the rights to the IP and the original arcade version from Taito, the NES version was made by Sammy Company, who merged with SEGA Enterprises to form SEGASammy Holdings, so the NES version may be housed at SEGA. Nintendo also most likely has the finished ROM in the archives, as it's listed in the leaked Nintendo Lot Check spreadsheets as NES-8P-USA PYROSS. We can only hope one day a prototype of this canned NES version of Pyross could be found by someone and preserved online.

A moment of silence for those ones still trying to recall the name of the game. Here's what I had posted some 10 years ago in a forum, out of desperation: "There was a coin-op game in late 80's for which I remember many distinctive things, but however much I have tried googling all kinds of different combinations of search strings that could be related to the game I have been miserably unsuccessful. The hero was in a forest with his girlfriend. Then a wizard came and kidnapped the girl. As the hero began his journey in order to free his beloved he initially wandered outside the castle, collecting coins. At that point he did not have any weapons. Then there was a shack, from which the hero could buy different kinds of fire. All players opted for the swirling fire, but there was also a straight one. The rest of the action was taking place inside the castle. It was more of a platform game. Before the final battle, the hero kept descending in the dungeons of the castle, where he fought with knights who bred smaller knights in numbers (or stones, I have a rather vague memory about that) and you jumped over these, in order to aim at the "breeding" knight. The final battle was with the wizard in a bigger chamber in the dungeon. The wizard then transformed into a giant dragon (or a monster of some kind) and you had to have your hero very near the dragon's claws in order to avoid all things it threw against you (stones? I don't remember exactly). Maybe the dragon threw some sort of thunder-like spells and the stones I mentioned are from altered beast... What kind of tricks your mind can play to you after 25 years or so... Do these sound familiar to anyone? It was a japanese game."

I used to think I was mister pro gamer when I learned to beat this game. But it looks pretty easy by today's standards. First game I ever saw that had the boss "show you his real form."

You missed quite a few secrets in this, for example on the woods level you can climb the left hand side tree when you start the level.
