I never leave comments - this may be my first one. On December 4th of 2023 I played this song for my step-father as he fought a painful battle with cancer. He was in my life for 45 years and was more of a mother to me than my own mother was. He had become nearly unresponsive and as I played this song I could tell that something was changing in him. At the point where the song hits a crescendo and the lyrics, translated are, "You become free from the bonds that bind you. You are free from the bonds that bound you," he took a deep breath, nearly sitting up, and made a sound of pain, his once closed eyes opened and fluttered closed. He layed back again and never regained consciousness. He passed away 14 hours later. Thank you, Einar, for gifting this song to all of us. I truly believe that this song helped my step-father transition across the bridge. I am so thankful to you so that we could give him this song.

While your friend lives in your heart he will never be lost. Like the rest of us, he is an immortal soul who has experienced many lives here. His recent one was a torment. These have imparted valuable lessons he’ll take into his next incarnation. Such is the true learning process. Do not mourn him. Celebrate his journey to a new experience - for death is the most incredible journey we all face. It is a renewal. It is a rebirth. And with any birth, there is pain. May your own pain at your loss be brief. Sending you love and as much healing as I can muster.

Say what you want about the TV show 'Vikings' (very mixed opinion myself), but the soundtrack was outstanding in large part due to Wardruna. My favorite scene of the entire series was the Ragnar's fleet setting sail to attack Paris with 'Helvegen' playing and Einar himself standing on the dock pounding the drum and singing as they depart. Mixed feelings about the series as a whole, but damn that scene was truly great!
@neondecay36502 жыл бұрын

@Dystopia11112 жыл бұрын
@@neondecay3650 You are 100% correct and I did make a mistake there. I was thinking of the scene where the fleet is departing for England, not Paris (later in the series), and got my wires crossed. The 2 scenes are intentionally similar with Helvegen playing during the 1st departure and Einar himself performing during the 2nd. The show had it's flaws, but the soundtrack was outstanding throughout.

To me, the best version of Helvegen has to be the live performance with Aurora at the Bergenhus Fortress. Aurora really adds an extra extra layer of emotion and an interesting dynamic where Einar hits you like a hammer and she pierces you like a dagger especially at the climax. The set design is just so simplistic yet atmospheric too. Lyfjaberg is definitely a very, very close second.

Like every second song..Or just ever song. Not a tune wasted. All goes deep. But I discovered not everybody gets it.. Only makes me like it more.

Every time, and every version of this song, it gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes. It's beautiful. Powerful. And even though I know it's coming, I love ending with the Rímur performance of the Hávamál.

When i flew out to London for the first concert you had after Covid, february 2022, you played Helvegen last and i cried like a baby at the end of the show. Dear Wardruna, your music touches me in a way i can not explain. Can't wait for your next show i will come especially for. Never stop playing, please.

I know this is a cultural music and history, but there is also something so deeply human about this. I don’t know if I’m allowed to, but I feel like this just unlocks a part of me that feels rooted, powerful, unstoppable, yet humble. I’ve been listening to the community for many years, and there is something indescribable about this particular power.
