I never leave comments - this may be my first one. On December 4th of 2023 I played this song for my step-father as he fought a painful battle with cancer. He was in my life for 45 years and was more of a mother to me than my own mother was. He had become nearly unresponsive and as I played this song I could tell that something was changing in him. At the point where the song hits a crescendo and the lyrics, translated are, "You become free from the bonds that bind you. You are free from the bonds that bound you," he took a deep breath, nearly sitting up, and made a sound of pain, his once closed eyes opened and fluttered closed. He layed back again and never regained consciousness. He passed away 14 hours later. Thank you, Einar, for gifting this song to all of us. I truly believe that this song helped my step-father transition across the bridge. I am so thankful to you so that we could give him this song.

@@CkloLabella I am referring to the principal singer, Einar Selvik. There have been a number of videos and recordings of him solo and the group, sometimes with guests, performing the song. The very end of it, about kinsmen, cattle, and one's actions living on, is from an old piece of writing.

This is an incredible piece. My favorite is when Einar performed this live with Aurora. I first heard this 2 years ago following the passing of my father - one could say he too was a modern-time warrior serving 33 years with distinction in the army. This song bears so many similarities and evokes deep seated memories of him.

For me wardruna is a painkiller. I do not remember if I wrote something like this, but, I have a regular migraines. No pill can take pain away. Thus I am turning on wardruna. Your songs put me in some sort of trance in which it is easier for me to overcome pain and fall asleep for some hours. Thus the pain goes away. I have been listening Wardruna for a long period of my life. So whenever I am stressed or in bad mood or depressed I listen to your songs as well. It brings me memories of past, times when I could afford myself to be more carefree and when everything seemed easier. As well you songs help me when I need some support, some stoic energy your songs help me as well. And your songs are perfect for hiling and walking in the forests. Thank you Wardruna, thank you for everything yoou are doing.

While your friend lives in your heart he will never be lost. Like the rest of us, he is an immortal soul who has experienced many lives here. His recent one was a torment. These have imparted valuable lessons he’ll take into his next incarnation. Such is the true learning process. Do not mourn him. Celebrate his journey to a new experience - for death is the most incredible journey we all face. It is a renewal. It is a rebirth. And with any birth, there is pain. May your own pain at your loss be brief. Sending you love and as much healing as I can muster.

Say what you want about the TV show 'Vikings' (very mixed opinion myself), but the soundtrack was outstanding in large part due to Wardruna. My favorite scene of the entire series was the Ragnar's fleet setting sail to attack Paris with 'Helvegen' playing and Einar himself standing on the dock pounding the drum and singing as they depart. Mixed feelings about the series as a whole, but damn that scene was truly great!

@@neondecay3650 You are 100% correct and I did make a mistake there. I was thinking of the scene where the fleet is departing for England, not Paris (later in the series), and got my wires crossed. The 2 scenes are intentionally similar with Helvegen playing during the 1st departure and Einar himself performing during the 2nd. The show had it's flaws, but the soundtrack was outstanding throughout.

To me, the best version of Helvegen has to be the live performance with Aurora at the Bergenhus Fortress. Aurora really adds an extra extra layer of emotion and an interesting dynamic where Einar hits you like a hammer and she pierces you like a dagger especially at the climax. The set design is just so simplistic yet atmospheric too. Lyfjaberg is definitely a very, very close second.

I am from El Salvador, a place so far away from this culture that it seems weird to feel this connected with it, it touches so deep within me that I feel like I had to live there in a past life, yet I do not understand a single word they are singing, thanks for this gift.

English Helvegen (Way to Hel) Lyrics: I sought the songs I sent the songs when the deepest well offered drops so mighty of Valfather’s pledge I know it all, Odin where you hid your eye Who will sing me in the death-sleep sling me when I walk the road to Hel and the tracks I tread are cold, so cold Early or in fading day still the raven knows if I fall When you stand by the gate of Hel and when you must tear loose follow you I shall across the bridge of Gjöll with my song You become free from the bonds that bind you You are free from the bonds that bound you #Wardruna #Helvegen #FirstFlightOfTheWhiteRaven Official live video by Wardruna performing Helvegen. © 2022 Sony Music, Columbia Germany, Music For Nations, By Norse

I know this is a cultural music and history, but there is also something so deeply human about this. I don’t know if I’m allowed to, but I feel like this just unlocks a part of me that feels rooted, powerful, unstoppable, yet humble. I’ve been listening to the community for many years, and there is something indescribable about this particular power.
