Brilliant , love the humour and the honesty of discussion. Yes the tradition and depth of conviction to never do business with those that do us over is mirrored by our loyalty to stand by each other through lean times and to reward and acknowledge that support from generation to generation. Well done .

Yet another great video and very interesting content…….. it’s lovely to hear you too chatting about the myriad of everyday problems that obviously affect UK farming at the moment and in years gone by ! Let’s all hope any problems on the horizon can be swiftly dealt with because the nation needs farms like yours to feed us ! Best regards as always .

A great update Andrew, nice to see you and James talking about the state of farming. It is very true loyalty is something that helps businesses, when times are hard if they stand by you you will then do the same in return. Oat straw can be a pain to get right at the best of times, hopefully it will come right and James will get it baled and cleared.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. The visit to Haceby church reminded me of childhood visits with my father when he was working at Old Somerby. There’s a lot of space in that neck of the woods. I can’t understand Govt there’s no joined up farming policy and in this mornings DT electricity is being imported at a cost of £250 million a month - madness. Thanks for this vlog.

Great mid week update, loved the banter Wardy. Proper farming has and will always be "Family and Friends" Help out when and where you can and one good turn deserves another. If we don't look after UK farms that have the highest standards in the world the public will end up paying more and more for inferior quality imports that with all respect cannot be relied on or guaranteed let alone the increased cost of "carbon miles"! 🤔.

Great discussion, really enjoyed it. "The industry is based on gentlemen" Sadly few other industries are, which might explain why the commercial relationship farmers have with supermarkets for example is so one-sided and exploitative. I can't help thinking that our society and economy would function better if gentlemanly conduct was more prevalent in business. However, I'm not sure that the inter-generational relationships James talks about are always a good thing: My grandfather was offered the chance to purchase his farm during the war after it had been taken over by the government for poor productivity. A neighbouring farmer maintained a lifelong grudge against him for it. His sons would have nothing to do with my father. I nearly had a punch-up with his grandson in a pub car park in 1991 over it - a full 50 years after the original incident which was a full 30 years before either of us were even born!

Lovely four centre windows. Is that an Early Georgian coat of arms? A church building with a really good feel to it. No I like imperial, all my engineering machines are regulated by it! Some years ago a number of farmers migrated to Hungary to farm there because the returns were better. Ah, Gentlemen! This has been the basis of business and commerce for generations. With the change of population in many areas that has been lost and good industrial relations with it.

Interesting video and discussion, not sure if current agriculture policy is a total sham or there up to something we haven't seen coming. Alot of countries in the world have some kind of farm produce support even the USA,the SFI I can see could give a lot of problems for farm businesses in the longer term when the 3 year scheme ends will take another 2 years to get the ground back into to production. With the further problem the farmer running the land will become reliant on scheme money and won't be able to gear up to farm it productively,and in the meantime the current Labour government finds the scheme's are costing to much so SFI is cut or abolished leaving a lot of hungry birds! Regards to farmers helping one another out as we do,I think it comes through over the centuries when crop failure or animal disease could easily mean famine which used to affect the general public to if not more so and they knew it!

I think farmers have always shared advice and information because as primary producers they basically receive the world market price for the product and it is no disadvantage if the neighbour can up production.

Two comments about relationships - I remember in the 80's when i started selling fertiliser in Essex, I can remember sons of farmers who insisted that they had to buy their fertiliser from Haslers of Dunmow as they had financed their father's farming business through Bills of Exchange - the annual "settle up" when inputs were charged against outputs. Being highly contentious, if i was producing nuts and bolts and i found a way of producing 10% more from the same amount of steel, would i tell anybody - NO!! You could argue that farmers are no different - Mr Peck is Mr Ward's competitor - why tell him what you do and give him competitive advantage? Discuss!!

Really interesting to listen to real farmers talking about the industry. Whilst I accept many products are traded world wide and one only has to look at where things like apples come from as an example, which is fine when times are settled but supposing something like Covid comes along and there are issues in the world wide supply chain. I think that the UK should aim to be more than 50% self sufficient in food which can be grown in the UK. OK avocados etc. are not going to grow here, but regarding staple crops, relying too heavily on imports for me is not a smart strategy.

I just had an unbelievably depressing conversation with a friend who farms in Southern England. What the hell is wrong with our world, is there any positivity? Where is the madness going to end? Around here in NZ IKEA are buying all the farms for carbon capture, good farms easy country. It is very hard to make money here with our cost structures, same as a farmer I talked to in Canada, in a good year they break even. China imports 16 million tons of grain and is moving to source it all from Russia and Sth America in the next 5 years, it is building ports to reach that end. I mean my beef pelts are worth £2, 6£ for an A grade, wool is worthless and everything else is close or below cost of production.

Sustainable Farming Incentive. It’s a government scheme with lots of options and pay us to grow crops for wildlife and not humans. Bloody ridiculous when we are only 60% self sufficient. Trouble is, the £/ha is better than growing some crops so there 100’s of thousands of hectares going in.
@stakman78

@@WardysWaffleAndrewWard ok that sounds like similar schemes here in NZ. It's for environmental sustainability apparently here. Just a money grab by government to look good to the world with our carbon emissions etc! It's like watching/listening to a mirror with the rules. However our chemical rules seem a little better. Funny how we plant rye grass in between crops to winter cattle on then just nuke it with pre emerge. Love your channel Wardy
