The guy was stumped , but one of the reasons you dont see ball valves every where in a boilerhouse is the the quick opening and closing of ball valve can hammering of pipes in steam mains or water hammer in condensate line. A gate valve slower opening action prevents this type of thing from happening. You typically dont ball valves passed 3 " at bigger sizes the handle ends up taking up alot swing space , gates at the same size dont need as much space. One positive for the gate valve is that they are easy to maintain and fix. You can repack the glands , grease spindle , take the bonnet off clean them, replace the wedge disc . its easy in that way because you dont have to disturb piping to fix an issue.

thanks gentleman ! Stuff like this definetly helps us beginners !

do you guys have one on flanges?, Packing, different uses for teflon, graphite packing for valves, maybe using it as a packing/gasket for some of the valves.. stuff like that is awesome too.

So I don't think we have done one specifically on those items but check out kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3a9nHlqqsqCa9k this video. Might answer some questions. We will look at creating a video to cover your questions. Thanks for watching!

Globe valves look like a Gate, but Globes usually have a flow arrow on it

I am in water treatment and don't fool much with the Gate and Globe valves, so thanks for the info!!

I would say that in comparing the gate to the ball valve, the gate is a more durable valve with all the steam headers I've seen having gate valves. You wouldn't see a ball valve on a H.P. steam line but might on a condensate or blowdown line with hot water. Your more critical non throttling valves tend to be gate valves.

Yes, most of gate valve have molybdenum which will make the valve resistant to heat and chlorine more than ball valve

I recently read the mud tub needs a special two part valve to avoid clogging. Does anyone know the name of the valve ?

Blowdown valve or fast operating valve or double disc gate valve quarter turn

Are blowdowns are all gate valves
@wareboilers4 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, what we see in our industry is most quick open valves will be gate valves but slows open valves can be modified gate valves or even globe type valves. Hopefully that answers your question. Thanks for watching!

Not all blowdown valves have to be gate valves. You can also have ball valves. Globe valves should not be used. Yes, that its the code.

Why would you use a gate over a ball valve? because slow opening is better? Answer wasn't clear..
@wareboilers4 жыл бұрын
Yes. A gate valve reduces the chance of hammer in some applications. Hopefully that clears that up. Thanks for the comment!

At minute 4:32 you said gate valves at ‘not’ typically used in blow downs? Hoping that was a brain fart. (Slow acting valves are code required on high pressure boilers over 100 psi.) just saying...

He was meaning blowdowns other than bottom blow on blrs. Like controls or trap strainers
