Aside from Vulkan being found and Artellus Numeon giving his life in Mount Deathfire to bring Vulkan back there is no moment in the chapters history that defined who they are as important as Istvaan. Well it's not though. Empathy is good, but when you know how and where to apply it. Salamanders are infamous for not following direct orders and get into conflicts with other chapters because they want to save civilians even when it goes completley against the mission protocols and it endagers the mission and other Space Marine lives. For them it is a weakness because at times they end up sacrificing millions of lives in pursuit of saving a few. Also, shall I remind you that the Salamanders weapons of choice are flamethrowers and incinerators? They burn their enemies alive. On the other hand, Ultramarines have one of the most prosperous colonies in the whole Imperium where civility, peace, prosperity, culture and academics can be pursued and the human population there have the best lives one could ever hope of having in the Imperium. So, you see, one is a very shortsighted and immature form of empathy, wielded like a weakness and oftentimes resulting in disaster, while the other is mature, it looks at the bigger picture and utilized as a strenght to build prosperous empires.

I think it's boastful ignorance due to the fact that the Ultramarine's successor chapters are typically far more... well, successful than the successor chapters of other founding legions, and so it's unlikely that any marine is aware of just how many chapters are actually out there, how many have been lost, or how many are intentionally skirting the edges of known space because their beliefs, while not necessarily heretical, would put them in severe predicaments with the hyper-rigid book followers such as the Genesis Chapter. As of right now, the Ultramarines have 50 confirmed successor chapters. The Blood Angels alone have 51 confirmed successor chapters. So, yeah, factoring in just two founding chapters, the Ultramarines don't even have the majority in a near-tied 50/50.

When I first started collecting the miniatures and getting into the lore, the things that really kept my blood rushing and excited were generally the stories and the beatiful realistic artworks found in the Codexes and Rule Books...the miniatures, although not super high fidelity due to constraints, tried to catch up to this realistic, dark and gothic world. Now it seems it's the other way around, the artworks are trying to represent the miniatures and it loses a lot of the initial appeal. Am I the only one noticing this?
