I regularly get requests to cast a 40K Space Marine but first I need a 3D print file. I'm a novice with ZBrush, but I fancied challenging myself to create one of these iconic figurines. I can't mech any mistakes. I need to be vigilant 😁
For me this is a Fanart tribute to Warhammer and those amazing Citadel miniatures. I've been painting those since I was old enough to spill paints and their creativity has inspired me. Long may they continue!
So here it is, my attempt at a generic Space Marine. Sculpted in ZBrush, printed on my Elegoo Mars 2 Pro for personal use only (don't sue me Citadel... I love your work 😁).

Hey VOG, I am a professional 3D artist and have worked with a lot of other artists over the years. You keep saying you aren't an artist, yet you keep producing art, and every video you take leaps forward. Your workflows in this video are way more refined than when you did Thrud. Can't wait to see this guy posed and cast!

Real Artists that understand everyone has to start somewhere wont be making you get them coffee. It doesnt matter if you are self taught or not because you make awesome items. Basically ANYONE can learn any skill if they put the time in and try. The most important part is to learn from mistakes and keep trying.

Your sentiments completely match my own. Things like this come easy to the minority. The rest of us have to keep trying, failing, learning and persevering. As long as we take enjoyment from that, everything is rewarding and worthwhile 😁😁😁

Real clay? I was hopeless. I was okay with a pencil and reasonable with a brush, but clay... nope. Virtual clay for some reason seems so much easier, probably thanks to the Undo function 😁 Keep plugging away at ZB. If you need any help, you can always bend my ear. Anyone who is interested in learning zbrush design from ZBJW - i can attest to what you said about the life long learning membership .. it boggles the mind to see what great value it is in being a member . and yes . I get such great support from them through the Discord app. even though I'm in a very different time zone, I can always expect a quick response from Henery or some one else that is as member .. It has improved my skill level - waybetter than expected . Keep up the great work mate :) Cheers

Quite daring to doing such a challenging model in ZBrush being just a self-admitted novice! I admit, Zbrush would not be my first choice to sculpt a hardsurface design like that... but the end result pretty good! Impressive, though some of the smaller details look a bit rounded and dull in the end result, like those small panel lines in the shin plating. Now to rig and pose it, I believe Zbrush has some stuff for that as well... keep at it, brave soldier!

I'm still surprised I was able to achieve it at all. Just a few months ago, this level of CAD work would have been an impossibility to me. I'm delighted to show that with a little simple tuition, just about anyone can achieve this sort of thing. I agree it's not perfect. I have to rein myself in when it comes to detail. Ultimately I'm creating something that will be around 50mm tall, so chasing ultrafine detail is a waste of time for me as it will never show up. I'm certainly aware that ZB is used by many incredible artists and ZB themselves have been keen to show how it's been used in making the new Godzilla movie. Personally I'm pleased to say that I've no plans of working towards THAT level of detail 😁😁😁

Pretty amazing work. I wonder at what point you will hear from GW? Hopefully they will leave you alone! If you are still tweaking the model, you might make the space between the backpack and the armor a little smaller? I believe it should not stand off quite so far. For some reason I am partial to the "beaky" Mk 6 armor if you think you'll make another sometime ;)

I'm not sure GW are too bothered about fanart. At the end of the day, it's a compliment to them and if anything, I'm more likely to increase their sales than diminish them. These SMs are great minis. I daresay there's lots of parts that folks will think need adjusting, but it's not supposed to be exact - just similar. I hope I've managed that 😁

awesome build matey. tbh i hate GW these days i find they overcharge and under produce models creating FOMO with collectors. and they are plastic. and we pay way to much for there plastic kits. and they discontinue models very fast never to be seen again. i think GW should scan all there old stuff that they dont sell anymore and make them a digital file to buy. i would happy buy STLS from gw. though the 3d prints would not be a collectors thing. as we all know you cant beat good old EAVY METAL but again GW if your watching i would happy pay for old models as stl files. :) cant wait to see this in metal. and just a side note. most slicers are crap at auto supports. but i do love how easy it is to work with lychee. so again VOG keep up the great work. :) your bud TK

A scratched plate isn't a bad thing as long as there aren't deep gouges. It's pretty hard to manage that without a lot of effort. Remember, you can always sand your plate if you feel it's a problem. Look, more on the "Is VoG an Artist?" subject... I think the reason you're getting so much pushback is because so many people consider _themselves_ Artists, who have considerably less experience or talent than you do. If _you_ aren't an artist, then what are they? What am _I?_ I've been working _as an Artist,_ with zero credentials and only my portfolio of work, for the last five years! Art is an *inclusive* discipline, not an *exclusive* one! You're an Artist because you _produce Art!_ What that is, is up to you and your customers... i.e. *US.* You may now add the tag 'Artist' to your resume; you have our permission! You are a 3d sculptor, a videographer, an editor, a foley artist, and anything else you need to perform your multimedia 'Art.' Ditch the Imposter Syndrome and take the compliment, and the Title. You deserve it!

Advertisement? Really? That was not the point. I get a LOT of questions about ZBJW and I also hear from so many people saying "You're an artist - I can't do what you do." My aim here was to say just about anyone can do what I do... no great artistic talent is required. Yes, with things like ZBrush some guidance is helpful as it's so involved, and again people seem to need reassurance that ZBJW aren't some rip-off outfit and that the training courses can deliver. I hope I've reassured those with concerns. THAT was my goal here... along with having a bit of fun making something I've long admired 😁😁😁
