Erebus is such a great character, and this short story from his POV is the ultimate ‘haters gonna hate.’ I love how completely uninterested he is in justifying or explaining himself, and he does it all with a smug grin on his face. He’s all like, “Oh, you wanted to know my real name and secret tragic backstory that explains and justifies everything I’ve done? F*** you, that’s what.” And no matter how much you hate him, Erebus is right about at least one thing: he’s been 100% committed to his cause from the start, and he doesn't give a single flying f*** about what anybody thinks of him-while having no illusions about any of it.

Relistening to this, and have just realised what an advantage it is to Erebus that his true name is not known (or even suspected). True names have enormous significance in sorcery and daemonology... No doubt many attempts to curse him have failed for this reason over the millenia!

As someone who recently read The Sublime Object of Ideology, I find his conversion fascinating. Erebus becomes a believer by pretending to be a believer. It’s an essentially Faustian operation.

Fantastic tale. I myself am agnostic as I can not fully dismiss religion since science can not prove a higher being exist as the faithful cant prove one exists. I personally think the simulation theory is the most likley to be true rather than any ideology.

I myself don't actually care all that much what amount of adherence to reality & reason, or of which of the myriad fantastical faiths one may instead choose to feel a fondness for... All that really matters to me is what the individual is like as a person, and if I happen to like those defining traits, or not. This seems a logical process by which to base one's opinions, seeing as that is what a person's true opinion is by simple definition; ie. does a person find enjoyment in any given subject that happens to be under their current consideration, or do they instead find that it's abhorrent to their own minds eye. A bit of an abstract & emotionally driven decision making process admittedly, yet at it's core this consists completely of logical reasoning being used when regarding the entirety of the matter...
