That knowledge doesn't stop the reader from feeling deep frustration about it though. The final vindication of a loyal man felt good, especially considering how rare such stories are in 40k.

Kinda remind me of the Mortifcators, who are also dour morose ultramarines obsessed with death. There's always the possibility of certain 'hybrid' ultramarine successors being the remnants of the lost legions as their character can be very un-ultramarine (Doom Eagles, Mortifactors, Silver Skulls)
