Ciaphas Cain is quintessential 40k. He's not a good guy, he's not a bad guy, he's just a guy trying to survive in the grim darkness of the far future. Best character they ever made!

What's funny too is that the Inquisitior who sometimes edits and annotates the stories adds when more complexity to his character, suggesting that sometimes he is being self-deprecating or observing that his self-cynicism blinds him to moments when he's genuinely heroic. It is brilliant.

Despite what Cain would likely say if he was expressing himself freely, he is a good guy, and despite doing it begrudgingly at times, he instinctively takes a heroic and selfless approach.

I thought Cain would have been one of the best choices for the main character for 40K to break in to film/TV; rather than starting with the Big E, Primarch's or major, named key figures. Ease people in to the setting with someone who's relatable. SM's, Primarch's Custodians, the Emperor wouldn't get any screen time, mentioned/whispered here or there; but the initial focus should be on Cain, the Imperial Guard and citizens. Done right the 40K cinematic EU could rival the Marvel/DC franchises; especially if it follows the Marvel progression. Singular Character focused entries leading to an "assembling"; rather than chucking all of the characters at you at once without any back-stories or context, settings, set-up, like DC did with Justice League!

Hmm.... See, I think he's too attractive and muscly (aka superman) Granted Cain has duelled World Eaters with his chain sword, but I always imagined him and Jürgen as a bit like Captain Blackadder and Baldrick from Blackadder 4th. Not slim per say, but kind of average with a bit of a dad bod. Trouble is all the actors I can think of are too old (Ewan McGregor for example, or Liam Neeson as I just watched Taken)

I love the protagonist and his- dodging any extra work you can, fake it 'til you make it, only doing the bare mininum whilst staying alive -attitude. Everybody stuck in a crappy job with huge expectations getting payed way too low, can assotiate with him, so basically every grunt from every army ever :')

As an avid 40K fan, the early realization of what had happened to Nordstrom and the others left a tantalizing little sense of dread. As Caiaphas himself would say, I was left waiting for the other boot to drop. And as always Sandy Mitchell didn't miss when he did let it drop!

That reminds me of one of the officers recounting Cain’s exploits in another novel where she says something like: “What appeared to be the Commissar cowardly running for his life was in fact a clever feint to draw the Orks and their vehicles on to a lake with a layer of thin ice where they fell through the ice and drowned. What a genius!”

My favorite cain book is the one where he takes a scape pod and endup in the middle of the dessert in an agry world being invaded by orks and he somehow makes a small army out of the citicenz, slaves, survivors and soldiers he collect along the way while fighting orkz and endup crossing the entiere dessert just to 1vs1 the war boss in a surprice atack

The greatest thing about this story is that they totally throw the idea that there is any originality in 40k over the side. Cain is just Flashman, and they have the decency to name the story after the film it’s a basically a retelling of! It’s very well done, as is so much of the 40k fluff, and your reading was really enjoyable. Keep it up. Congratulations on the birth of your boy. The first few months are the hardest and then the amazing joy outweighs the rubbish bits. Just remember, whenever undoing a nappy have a wet wipe to be strategically placed straight away, saves getting an accidental soaking!

I had previously read the George MacDonald Frazer Flashman books that inspired them soot was a great follow up. Caiphas is a great place to start because he is such a good handhold for contemporary readers for the hideous dystopia of the IoM. Cowardice and cravenness is the only rational response.
