The Night Lords stories are a great example of how you can create compelling, complex, fascinating characters without making them GOOD or even NICE in any way. I think the last novel in particular was ADB trying to hammer home that yes, they have a very sparse sort of brotherhood going on and they have doubts and regrets and trauma to deal with... but none of that really excuses their actions anymore. They’re broken souls still trapped in a loop of alternately hating and wanting to make proud their father. They’re amazing to read, a couple of them almost Byronic in their hubris and tragedy... but yeah, it shouldn’t be forgotten that they’re also evil bastards.

Ive always loved Konrad Kurze. Such an interesting character. An evil Martyr. An Evil for good. Such a great concept. Its no surprise he fell to chaos but he had such strong sense of right. Its a tragedy I can really get behind.

I think one of the coolest little things about them is their focus on being "midnight clad". I love all the quotes and intense moments of "we go in midnight clad" "i want to fight in midnight clad". It's sounds amazing, a bit edgy but in a cool way. "You shall stand in midnight clad, your claws forever red with the lifeblood of my father's failed empire, warring through the centuries as the talons of a murdered god." Maaaan.....hearing how tortured Sanguinius sounds in SoT: Saturnine about his visions really made me feel bad for ol' Konrad :/

No, torment is the best the great enemy could inflict upon the Night Haunter. He was singualr in his aim to bring peace through violence, to be the harbinger of an entire species.
