Warhammer Fantasy Lore - Knights of the Realm, Bretonnia Lore

I'm glad you saved Grail Knights for another video, they really deserve their own. To the Reiksguard vs Standard Bretonnian Knight of the realm question this actually is a very tricky one, and there are a few factors which must be taken into account. First off, Bretonnian warhorses are superior to even the best empire warhorses. This is why they are better than standard Empire Knights as a rule. Not because their own skill is nessisary superior, but because they are riding a better machine into battle. This is also why, even though plate armor is far more common in the Empire than it is in Bretonnia, in the lore at least the Bretonnian Knights are overall better armored, because their horses are strong enough to wear a lot more barding than the Empire Knights are. Second off, Empire Knights have more diverse social rolls to fill than just Knights, so in general they have less time to spend on purely combat based training. Also, as you know since you narrated the Reiksguard series, the Reiks are selected for political reasons to instill absolute loyalty to the Emperor into the sons of the most important Nobles. A lot of them are actually just average. In short, the Reiksguard have an excellent training program, and the best equipment the Empire can give them, but they are not nessisarly THAT much better than other Empire Knightly orders, and since the Bretonnians are generally better than the lesser orders, it gets very close and hard to determine when you compare them to the greater ones.

You make some very knowledgeable and good points :) To be honest, I'm a bit biased in favor of the Reiksguard just because I narrated the novel. Although both Reiksguard knights and Bretonnian knights are generally assholes to the little people, I think the Bretonnians take the cake. I remember reading the 2 "main" novels about Bretonnian knights many years ago and even I was pissed off with how they treat their peasants. Even joining an Ungor band would be a step up, lol. At least the Reiksguard (at least some characters) appeared to be more down to earth in the novel, and have more common sense.

@@GrimDarkNarrator I think if it was any other major Knightly Order I would be happy to concede that they are superior to average Bretonnian Knights of the Realm. Its the political factor involved in the Reiksguard that really gives me pause and makes me doubt the Reiks. The Knights of the White Wolf for example I would be happy to put on par with hardened questing Knights, since I know they are selected only for merit, and for this alone. I cant really argue the arrogance and bad peasant treatment factor, since it doesn't have anything to do with their combat prowess, though you already know this. I know what you mean though, its hard to root for a faction that is just a complete asshole faction. This is kind of cheating, since it basically amounts to a "Nuh uh" argument but as a Bretonnia fan I kind of take this with a grain of salt. How badly peasants are treated in the lore has gone up and down in the sourcebooks over the years, and I typically envision a more positive version of Bretonnia when I am playing them, since such a version does exist in older armybooks of 5th edition and such. Again, unless you are embracing your faction as evil. its hard to root for a faction when they are riding around kicking puppys and throwing babies down wells for the laughs, which the Knight of the Realm books all but has the brets doing. There are a few discrepancys with the Knight of the Realm books besides this, namely, we never see a Grail Knight besides Reolus or a Grail Damsel besides the protags sister, despite being involved in a massive war which spans 2 Duchy's.

Ahh Bretonnia, how I love you. It's only natural for Knights to fight for the honor of the only mages in the Warhammer world besides the Dark Elves that are cannonicaly hot.

@@GrimDarkNarrator And the wood elves to, sure, but for some reason you don't hear about it. When you say the Empire though, that's not quite what I meant, the Grail Damnsels seem to have some kind of supernatural effect that causes this, because they are all said to be hot, while Empire Mages are perfectly normal in this regard.

It's a fairly decent game, but it could've been so much more. I personally liked the combat but it was relatively short and it eventually got too repetitive and grindy.
