I don't think "upstate" is too common of a term in the US, since it doesn't really have any purpose unless there's a noteworthy location in the north and a decent amount of people live south of it (ex: upstate New York vs. New York City).

Yeah, I’ve only heard of upstate New York from movies and the like. I live in a tall state and Ive never come across anyone saying upstate Utah 😂

@@BlareWolfgang Hahaha, as someone else who lived in Utah I can second that. I think once it gets tall enough you just default to northern & southern (USU & Arches).

It is also a thing in Michigan. Upstate just means the vast swaths of woodlands, lakes, and cabins that are more fun to visit than live at.

I live in the Midwest and we use upstate when saying where you’re going. Like heading upstate to Chicago. Like when you say your taking a trip up to see family if they are North of your or heading down to the market if it is south/lower than you

Yeah, it means away from major urban areas. Upstate is for New York because away from NYC is north. Downstate works for Illinois because Chicago is in the northern part of the state and all everything else is down the map
