TBF "reverse engineering a gunblade" isn't as insane as it sounds. Those gunblades don't fire projectiles, the gunpowder just adds an effect to the slash (like an analogue vibroblade). It's not beyond belief that this Gunhhildr's people invented gunpowder before bullets, and it wasn't until their enemies (who knew what a sling was) took the gunblades apart that anyone thought to put the two together.
