Warhammer Restoration - GRIMDARK ULTRAMARINE

This warhammer 40k Ultramarine Gravis Captain gets a grimdark make over. Oils, Dirty Down Rust, chipping lead the way in weathering this model to place it in the universe of warhammer.

Dragging back that saturation on the gold in particular really changes the mood of the model. I'll have to keep messing about with my metallic paints to see what different moods I can create. Great work!

In my personal opinion, Grimdark is the feeling of wear and tear, seeing something that was brilliant in the distant past and that now is no more than the shadow of what it once was, that is why in the grimdark style contrast and contrast are so important. the rust detail

Personally, the definition is in the name. "Grim" and "dark" haha. That's why the art from the rule books from the 80s and 90s is my favorite. Full of grotty goodness. Your work captures all of that so well, and your work is such an inspiration!!

I love it! I personally feel that Space Marines should only ever be crisp and pristine on the parade ground or in their fortress-monasteries. Even training on a battlebarge is going to get scrapes and nicks everywhere.

I love this video series. A well meant tip. I find it easier to let an ultrasonic cleaner do the main work of stripping the model. I got a 3l steel ultrasonic cleaner (where you can also select the temperature and waveform/intensitiy) . I fill the tank with regular water. In the warer bath I drop a llvery lossely fitting glass bowl. In the bowl are the modells in methylated alcohol or what ever you use to strip the paint. I set the cleaner at 25°C max Waveform and 45min cleaning. Afterwards usually I just need to rinse and brush of remaining very lose paint. But most of the paint dissolved in the mean time.

Grimdark to me is about weathering and, gore and age without drawing away from the readability as an art subject. High resolution textures, high contrasts and soot/dirt/grime all techniques that lend to the mood!

I think you hit the right notes on the Grimdark model. Desaturated colours, adding grime, rust and blood, and higher contrast between the dark and mid tones. Some people also limit the variation in colours to neutral and earth tones

Even though I love 40K 😘 However the premise of an entire galaxy that is always at war and it being a nightmare for everybody is implausible. I've spent 13 years of my life in active wartime service and it never ceases to amaze me how when there is war most of the world is still peaceful..Space is too big.

Grimdark to me is superbly expressed by the clean and bright look we find in the painting style of 2nd ed. as opposed to the brutal, goriness of 40k's reality. The futility of fighting against inevitable defeat. My preferred method to do this is to mix pristine, shiny minis with those clearly showing signs of combat in one army, one unit.

Another great way I used to add wear is a small triangle file to put chunked and chips on edges and a small dremel to add rears and holes in the cape, it's amazing what you can achieve by just hacking it up.

I agree that grimdark is a more of a style that gives a certain feeling. And that's why it's hard to pull off. People tend to think that it's just a set of techniques to use and make just a sloppy mess with overuse of washes and drybrush and severe lack of highlights.

The first paint job wasnt bad, but the deeper tones and range on that armour is just too good. The cape is also pretty boss, but i might have gone a different color set for the cape, as the clash of red and blue i find slightly distracting from the grim dark theme. Purley a personal asthetic choice however, your skills are not at all in question here. Lovley work.
