The Union launches its first campaign in retaking and reopening the Mississippi River from the Confederates. Their first major obstacle in this great and daunting undertaking are the Confederate strongholds at Island Number Ten and New Madrid, Missouri. Union Brigadier General John Pope, commanding the Army of the Mississippi, must eliminate these two strategic defensive points on the Mississippi River in cooperation with Flag Officer Andrew H. Foote’s Western Flotilla if the Union is to achieve its crucial first step in the campaign to reopen the mighty river to Union traffic.

@@carywest9256 yes “Fungus” has of course been a chiding nickname throughout my life. My brother’s middle name is “Foote”… I’ll have to relate your observation to him lol Flag Officer Foote died of kidney disease during the war. My Great-Grandfather, Addison Osgood Foote, was an infantryman on the Northern side, who survived the conflict. We’re also distantly related to Shelby Foote, whose ancestors fought on the grey side.

I agree with you 100% I wish there was a detailed book on the whole affair, there’s so much, detail left, like the full surrender ceremonies there and Tiptonville, and the pow’s so early in the war, and in this theater, camp Randell was opened, there a cemetery there. How many officers and men, see these wasn’t paroled as Donaldson’s or Vicksburg. They had to wait, details of the regiment’s such as the 27th and the rosters of men and officers, where all these people would later serve, all those Rebel officers, where did they go ? How many was surrendered? Officers & men? How many arms was collected. I believe it’s all important and highly over looked, suppose, they held, and got relief to Johnston or Beauregard at Shilo ? Sure they was pretty well cut off by Pope’s engineers landscaping and planning, it was a gamble that paid off. But it’s not looked at today as a important maneuver, or battle , bc The battle of Shiloh casualty Dommers overshadow that so much😮, Not to consider, it is nice to win wo so much blood shed. I do wish some young person would consider doing a good book report on it, there’s a lot for research and depth for a very good read, perhaps a good book on a forgotten battle your grandfather’s story for example, all these men, there’s more I believe that is yet to be told. How about them Reb too ? Mostly they are scrapper’s, but oh well. I’d like to know more .

Great work! The river battles of this war are so interesting and unique in history. Ironclads were literally floating tanks that were near-impervious to the available artillery systems, sometimes deflecting over 100 shells with minimal damage. TMK this was the last major war where river-faring vessels played an essential role in subjugating forts

I think the issue was less that the measures of defence were obsolete, and more that the US just had overwhelming force. They were able to bring a LOT of manpower and firepower to bear on the defenses.

New MADrid!!!!! I grew up there, just wanted you to know the correct way to pronounce it. Years ago we had Civil War re-enactments every summer. Fun times. Such a rich history where I grew up, although I sympathized with the Union, have ancestors on both sides. Which, sadly, was common back then.

At a cost of fewer than 100 casualties, John Pope captured 7,000 Confederates at New Madrid & Island Number 10, in April, 1862, That's the same Pope who was defeated by Lee at 2nd Bull Run, in August, 1862. Pope rehabilitated his reputation, after the 2nd Bull Run fiasco, when he went West to manage the Dakota War. He oversaw the defeat of the Sioux War in Minnesota

Great Grandpa Henry Coleman Lee was 46th TN CO I :) he was captured and escaped from island no 10 at Camp Butler and on his way ran into nathan bedford forrest and forrest sent him home because he was blind with eye issues and in no condition to fight. Little did Nathan (MY 4th cousin 3rd time removed know that his son William Henry Lee married Mattie Mozilla Forrester and thats how a LEE OF VA and FORREST are related :) Forrest is a FORRESTER out of scotland his grandfather dropped the er off the name during a money dispute. Henry Coleman Lee is a Lee of Va Robert E Lee 4th cousin 7x removed :) MI FAMILIA!

I just watched the video on Pea Ridge and just started this one. This is good material, but the overall quality is hampered by a couple of flaws that I think could be cleaned up. The most annoying is the frequent change of verb tense. It’s acceptable to narrate in either past or present tense, but changing tense repeatedly disrupts the flow considerably. Next, there are occasional mispronunciations of town names like Keokuk and New Madrid, and the word “theater” is usually accented on the first syllable. Finally, overall flow of narration could be improved. Clean up those items and this becomes a very impressive and top-notch channel.

My great great grandfather fought in this battle for the Confederates. I'm currently doing some research on him. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and served in the First Tennessee Heavy Artillery Regiment (Jacksons) and was captured after the battle. I was wondering if anyone knows what happened to the Confederates after they were captured.

The graphics and analysis are excellent. One complaint, however. The narrator continually mispronounces place names. In this and associated videos Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, and Carondelet are not pronounced correctly. Part of the problem is that Americans tend to "angelize" foreign words. (New Madrid is NOT pronounced like the Spanish city.) It is obvious that the narrator is trying to do justice to these place names, but just a little more research (perhaps a phone call?) would be in order.
