With the Peninsula Campaign coming to an end, a new campaign begins in the summer of 1862 - the Northern Virginia Campaign. Frustrated by McClellan's unwillingness to re-engage Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia outside Richmond, President Lincoln issues orders to form a new Federal field army around Washington, designated as the "Army of Virginia." At its head is Major General John Pope, newly-arrived from the Western Theater to take command and hopefully spur the Eastern armies into action against Lee's forces. On July 19th, 1862, the Northern Virginia Campaign begins when Pope orders the Army of Virginia to begin its advance toward the vital railway hub of Gordonsville. Lee quickly reacts, reorganizing his army and sending the newly-created Left Wing under Major General Stonewall Jackson to meet Pope's advance. As the two forces move on a collision course with one another, the stage is set for the campaign's first major battle near Culpeper, close to Cedar Mountain.

@@WarhawkYT i just watched it, wanted to before i replied I definitely enjoy his battle maps. He presents the terrain well, and he always tells good stories well like Jackson being confused for a farmer. What I think sets your videos apart is setting up the strategic situation. Not to say one is better than the other, any creator that presents CW stuff is great to me.

I've noticed and will commend the increased detail in the map, and there's been a clear progression in the quality of your editing and narration. From the beginning however this has been the most excellent and comprehensive rendition of the American Civil War. Especially being able to watch it unfold respectively!

As someone who lives in Culpeper, it's pretty surreal to see how it factored into the campaigns of the Civil War.

Good job with those European names!!! One you might have erred on, however is Krzyzynowski, which might sound closer to "Sheh-sheh-NOV-ski". This one is a surprisingly good idea!!! I know a bit about Cedar Mountain and 2nd Manassas, but less on the build-up to these summer battles, with the political wrangling also going on on both sides.

The battle of the 2nd Manassas was General Lee wait for Pope to make his move. Lee moved accordingly and smashed Pope when he made his move. Lee completely out fought Pope and it could have been a lot worse

I honestly wonder why Lincoln chose Pope over Grant to bring East. Pope certainly had success at Island 10, but that’s about it. Grant had already won at Henry and Donalson and captured Nashville.
