We shouldn't fall into binary thinking - it's not about only excel based calculations or only emotion. It's about making an informed decision. Reason for buying, i am really passionate about cars, before vento i had polo Diesel 1.2 for 5 years, i wanted naturally aspirated 1.6L petrol engine for performance with more comfort and driving dynamics. Cool. Many people must do such calculation to identify opportunity cost. Owning cars makes sense for those that drive more than 4000 kms a month. For anyone that doesn't drive even 1000 kms a month, renting a cab is the best option EVs on the the other side might be a a losing proposition at this stage. The batteries in an EV are probably as costly as the car itself. Batteries need to be replaced at an interval. Hybrid might be the best choice and gives the best of both worlds IMHO experience.

I am just addressing my point of view and don't want to hurt anyone's thought and I may be too young to talk in front of Warikoo. It is true that buying car (or any other liability) needs huge money and there are other assets which can give us far better returns, But I believe happiness is priceless. If we saved money and there are cores in the bank when we get old, but does anyone want to die without using that money? Definitely NOT! I believe we should 'Keep Growing...Keep Earning...Keep Enjoying'. So, at the end balance should be zero for all these three. Why we are separating out financial from emotional. I think they are not much different, add emotional value in excel and then we will come to know the exact returns. Financially returns may be too less but emotional returns are far better, I think that is the only purpose of life. It is not like we will start begging on road immediately after buying such thing, we will keep learning and keep earning.

Thanks for the comparison. But I think the comparison is missing a key element here. If a middle class person is planning to rent a car, it is more likely due to unaffordable down-payment and insurance costs that need to be paid upfront. This video is very useful for understanding all financial scenarios related to car. I watched it carefully and I have following observation on it. In case of renting a cab or a car, you have invested the amount of down-payment and insurance + maintenance with some 6% interest and then you calculated the effective rate per km. This is ok. Now, in case of car buying, one is paying down-payment and insurance + maintenance amount but at the same time, monthly subscription is not applicable. So, similar to renting scenario, one can invest this monthly subscription of 22k with same interest for decided period which will also generate returns. This returns should also be considered in buying car scenario. It will be more comparable.
@tannmaysmahajan2638 Жыл бұрын
Although the downpayment is considered in case of buying a car but the balance amount payable is funded via loan and hence EMI was considered This EMI would somewhat be similar to the rental amount and hence that amount must have not been considered for investment purpose in the buying option

(2) In "buying a car option", you have considered interest on down payment as an opportunity cost. Since this is considered in buying a car option, why did you deduct the same cost in "renting a car" and "renting an Uber/Ola"? Duplication!!!

I think if we increase the period of consideration, the purchased car will beat everything else down as the EMI, insurance etc payments will get removed or reduced from the calculation. Yes, petrol cost, parking etc will be higher with time and inflation but they will also impact (petrol and maintenance will) in the other options too. The selling price of the owned car will also not depreciate significantly further over the next 4-5 years of ownership and if one retains the car for 15 years (petrol) in a place like NCR, it is likely to outweigh others Not sure if one needs to be so calculative but a good starting point to understand your options. However one big takeaway from this - you have not tried to go overboard with the budget on the car subscription, this in my head is the true learning for all to stick with what ticks the real need and not desire as that money can be spent on something more useful

Hi Ankur, while calculating expense of owning a car shouldn’t you consider the SIP of the amount which otherwise you would be paying for subscription? The reason for asking this is when you are calculating for subscription you are considering the return on the down payment which you didn’t have to pay if you went with the subscription. Just think about it.

Sir you should not add fixed subtitles in video, it's not good for focus.because as they change my attention goes to them and I don't need them.

You have not been to bangalore it seems, you have to start booking cab after you wake up to get the get when you are ready to leave for office. Nowhere in india you can book a cab for net ₹13 for km unless you are booking it for a whole day from unorganised travel agency or cab owner. I have just calculated again and cab cost will be not less than ₹20 per km at any point of time during the day including ride time and minimum fare and all taxes. Simply dividing the fare by km for easy calculation. you are trying to say a cab wala can drop you at your convenience at cheaper cost than owning the car, then how the can wala is making his living out of the same car which is cost me more when i own it and cheaper when renting if for short period??
