The Hessian troops were not mercenaries. They were supplied under treaty from their states. They were regiments of those states armies. They were in no sense mercenaries in the modern sense. They were no ore mercenariesthan their British comrades. A soldier of Hessen;Kassel was enlisted and served in theservice of his own prince. That prince supplied troops to the British under treaty. It was not an unusual arrangement.

Hessians were in no way mercenaries. Their Princes were paid, not the soldiers (at least no more than their normal wage). Most were conscripts. As individuals, they stood nothing to gain by fighting.

Toy Soldier Review British and American soldiers were paid a regular army wage. Does that make them mercenaries as well then?
@TOYSOLDIERREVIEW6 жыл бұрын
Dave 1776 Hi Dave, All the Hessians were doing was churning out soldiers for hire, they used other countries as well as Britain, they were not trained by the British and had their own officers and were not directly paid by the British. Often confused are the Gurkas, people call them Mercenaries however they are trained by the British and have British officers Commanding and are directly paid by the British

Dave. I suspect the term is used in an effort to denigrate the German troops fighting in the Revolution as mere princely hirelings and contrast them in an unfavourable light with their opponents. I'm sure it mattered little to them and it's certain that the men who fought strove as best they could and that those who deserted and remained contributed to their new homeland. Wonder how many descendants they have?

Neither then nor now could the Hessians be described as mercenaries except in the more hysterical propaganda. Nor were they any better or worse in their behaviour towards civilians or prisoners than the British troops or the loyalist auxiliaries. Indeed, Hessians had served, together with on G Washington, on the British side during the Seven Years War (refered to in the Americas as The French and Indian War).

@@TOYSOLDIERREVIEW Obviously. But at least I base my opinion on legal definitions.
@steelrain57063 жыл бұрын
@@remittanceman4685 ah but you don’t, your so called legal definitions are modern conceptions. The Hessians were mercenaries in the same tradition as the Swiss and Landsknects of the 16th centuries, they were mercenaries in the sense that they were soldiers of a foreign power fighting for the British whether they were paid individually or as a complete body of troops. In the same way the Irish wild geese were mercenaries fighting for the French...The Hessians were paid essentially like the Swiss of the 16th century, the Swiss Captains got paid and distributed the money to his men. The only difference was the Hessians principality was paid then they distributed the monies to the men in the form of wages...The problem a lot of you are having is that the definition of a mercenary has changed today......The status of the Hessians as mercenary soldiers would have been accepted at the time as they conformed to people’s conception of the term that had been around for centuries.....Even today’s Ghurkas would have been regarded as mercenaries in the past....In the 19th century the Ghurkas were regarded as mercenaries but over time their status changed because the meaning of the term mercenary changed. Now they are regarded as part of the British regular Army.....

Being Canadian, I am more into Seven Years War and War of 1812. Well, in fairness, I am mostly into modern and late migration era/early medieval, but those are what I am into for the age of black powder.
