Thank you, I like the contrast paint effects to roof and walls. I wish Warlord Games did their buildings to a tad smaller scale, but I suppose 15mm captures the biggest audience.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah they seem to do very true scale 15mm, which will mean many people may opt for 10mm or some smaller 15s. Visually these will look stunning with modern 15/18mm models as well, so I guess you’re right about it being the biggest audience.

Another excellent video and it's great to see the size of the model when it's completed, thanks for that, really appreciated. Like you, I'd be tempted to keep it as separate buildings, but I think I'd also make a bespoke courtyard that sits in the middle of it all. The weathering looks brilliant, I love the rooves. Also, have you ever seen the Flory clay washes? I use them for streaking on my buildings and they are fantastic for weathering.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Alex. I’ve been thinking more and more about a nice courtyard. 2mm mdf is an obvious choice, so I could get something cut to either fit inside or the building on top. I’m also wondering about some felt, cut in the size of the footprint, and it takes textured paint very well, would be a nice easy to store option. I’m going to have to search those Flory clay washes now, they sound interesting. Realised I didn’t include any pictures next to 15mm/18mm models. I’ll be talking about this some more on my next blog I think, so if you haven’t got enough of an idea on size that might help. I think with Sarissa stuff being quite large footprint wise, I’d say this would be perfect for 18mm though, 20mm would be too big I think.
@StormofSteelWargaming
@StormofSteelWargaming 2 жыл бұрын
@@MiniatureRealms Yeah a bit of felt would be an ideal solution. Rather than MDF I'd use 2mm plasticard as it doesn't warp and is quite light. But you still have to store it... Check out the Flory washes, they'll change your life! Don't worry, I got a good enough idea of the size on your cutting mat and it being against your hands. It certainly does look good enough size for my needs.

Very nice. I used a very watered down buff paint to fill in the cement/grouting lines on a brick-faced resin building I did. I don't have the dust powders you mention but I feel this could also work just to run into the grooves on the roof of these MDF kits
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 жыл бұрын
That would work well, I’ve also got dust weathering washes, but most are enamel based and I’d have had to spend a lot of time sealing the paint to prevent damage to the thin card roofs, I was too lazy and wanted a quicker method.

@@MiniatureRealms Just spent a couple of hours looking up old photos and drawings of La Haye Sainte and it is possible that the wall did not form three sides of a square with the farm house. The other two sides seem to have been a hedge, but finding real evidence is eluding me at the moment. Interestingly, a number of drawings have the stables connected to the barn by a cart gate wall rather than connecting directly. Other drawings have no shed in the garden, whilst some do, and hardly any agree where the yard gate is situated, even modern ones which have photos to go by. I have found a new obsession ...

Looks really good, couple of questions; What did you do to hide the points that come through the roofs to attach them to the build? Did you do anything to allow the roof shingle marks to come through the paint?
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I didn’t hide those parts as such, they just don’t stand out when painted, they’re not that noticeable anyway. The paint was thin enough to allow the roof to show through.

Really nice work and a great tutorial for the buildings in the starters although on balance I don’t think I’ll be getting it or Hougoumont as I think they’ll get in the way on the battlefield. I don’t really think Epic is a building based battle system so my games are likely to focus on either sides of these buildings. I’d rather play Bourgeois’ assault on Kempt’s brigade as part of D’Erlon’s attack than Charlet’s attack on Le Haye Sainte. This means that Le Haye Sainte will be on the western edge of the table so I think La Belle Alliance and the Decoster House, in the starters, will be able to cover for Le Haye Sainte’s eastern side. Besides I need to save the £30 so that I can afford the metal limbers for Mercer’s Royal Horse Artillery😉
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you 😊 Totally understand that approach, they are very big in footprint, 10mm and/or a larger table would better. Also agree on the rules/game of epic not really being about buildings (you could play a lovely 15mm game of Sharpe practice in that terrain). Saying all that, I’m pretty happy to abstract with scenarios to fit my gaming space, so I’ll make it work for rule of cool. Enough to make the members of a few Facebook Napoleonic groups get very uppity 😂

Looks great! Can’t wait to build mine. Never done an MDF kit so looking forward to it. I’m thinking I’ll try using oil paints since I can really blend the colors. I haven’t had a lot of experience with Contrast for these applications. Are those homemade roads?
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 жыл бұрын
Oils should work really well, you’ll get a lovely result from them. The roads are Deep Cut studio neoprene ones, nice enough but I think I’m going to get some of the new Geek Villain cloth ones to go over the undulations in my fleece mats better.

Love the vids giving me lots to think on as returning to wargaming after 40yrs so basically noob lol. You mention you 'dust painted' it after black priming. I have Army painter matt black spray and also gesso black and grey liquid paint. Which is best and how on earth do you 'dust paint', google was not my friend.....
@MiniatureRealms

You can achieve a quick and dirty zenithal highlight with spray cans, black first then grey mostly top down, and trying as best as possible to leave some black in the shadows. It’s not as easy with spray cans as it is with an airbrush, but it can still be done. Here’s an explanation on how I do it with an airbrush, it’s not quite the same, but will help illustrate the process and reason for doing so. I bought the 28mm version of this which was a superb kit. My problem was that it turned out to be too big for my Wargame table! 🙄 I posted a video on my channel a while back. Ended up selling the kit by way of an exchange for painted figures. The version you have seems like a very good kit indeed. The painted buildings look very good indeed. What is the footprint if it was based please? Hope you are all feeling better soon.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 жыл бұрын
It’s about a foot square, so not small, a 10mm version would work on smaller tables I think, really depends on the kind of scenario I think. We’re all recovered now thank you 😊

Great video, very useful. Will likely pass on this in favour of a 10mm (N Gauge / 1:160) version so as to be able to get a wider area represented by the table top (6x4). Would be nice to add an image showing the footprint of the building on a 6x4 just to show the perspective (not sure of you can do that under you explanatory notes). You say about 1' square which is likely going to limit the battlefield to very close proximity to the building, my main problem with 'to scale' buildings even at 15mm (1:100).
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 жыл бұрын
Yep you’re totally right on scale, and these Sarissa buildings are always very true in size it seems, not what seems like a ‘12mm(ish)’ foot print on one’s like the Empires at War ones I have. If the size becomes a problem I might grab a 10mm 3d print from eBay, but I don’t mind a bit of abstract for a game rather than strict ground scale.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry forgot to answer your question about the footprint on a 6x4. I can’t add pictures to the comments or description I’m afraid, but my next blog will have a lot of chatter about table set up and plans for the Waterloo side of my project, so will cover that a bit then.
@Edward-Plantagenet
@Edward-Plantagenet 2 жыл бұрын
@@MiniatureRealms no problem. Fairly easy to visualise it given it’s about 1’ square. Basically a quarter of the table width wise and a sixth lengthwise. That’s a fair bit of turf!
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely, I’m going to working on my own slimmed down abstraction of D’Erlon’s attack as a scenario. Like the one I’ve done for the northern section of Vittoria, no doubt it would play better on a bigger table, but I’ll have to compromise a little.
@Edward-Plantagenet
