A fascinating subject clearly explained, including the vital tip that colour warmth or coolness is relative. Also, I would never have thought of introducing warm highlights into the cooler ones to prevent the dog from looking too cool overall. Can't wait to try this, which is my response to all of Emma's videos!

I love your work Emma. I do find the sticks to big for me to use I prefer the pencils. Your colour theory was interesting to listen too and helps me to expand on colour in the shadows.

What an eye opener. I got the purples totally wrong. I called the vivid one warm. Another thing I need to study now. Thanks Emma x
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 3 жыл бұрын
In another context that purple one might be warm...for example if next to a cool blue. In this case it was the cooler end of my spectrum in this piece. Colour is relative, just depends what it's next to as to how it reacts.

Thanks so much for this video Emma, I think colour theory is so important yet I was never taught it in school. Some of my art work has had a flat appearance and I couldn't understand why until I started on looking at colours and subtle differences in shadows and reflections and how they appear next to one another. Much of it really about our perception of colour as well as what's reflected back to our eyes, how the mind "invents" colour to make sense of the world we see.

It sounds as though if I purchase the Emma Colbert “Animal Set” and the “Lights and Darks” by Unison that I’ll have the correct supplies to do your tutorials on Patreon? Are there are any single soft sticks I should get to be sure I have enough color range? Ordering from Jackson’s isn’t as easy from the USA and I’d like to get all I’ll need. I know you’d also have me get the Faber-Castel hard black stick too. Anything else? I don’t mind picking up some of your other favorite colors. (I have Pastelmat paper and blender tools already. My art interests are landscapes, animals, and protraits-too varied to be certain about which sticks to buy.) Thank you.
@EmmaColbertArt

Hi Catherine, if you want to paint a mixture of those subjects I would recommend the animal set and perhaps a landscape set. You won't have greens otherwise. The animal set will surprisingly cover you for a lot of people portraits also. It's just a good basic palette. But you will want landscape colours. Here is a link to the Faber Castell black stick, I do like those! www.jacksonsart.com/faber-castell-pitt-monochrome-crayon-burnt-black-soft?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=087408522c31eeb1f982bc0eaf81d35f. You don't need to have every colour I use, I share the colour codes so you can substitute for what you have.
