It just occurred to me that I never thanked you for this video! I froze on a backpacking trip in moderately warm weather in march of last year. Came home, found this video, then went back out to the same trail a few weeks later on a cold, cold, wet weekend and THRIVED! I was also able to borrow a superfly and winter hammock sock from the guy I was dating at the time and that certainly helped!

Yep, I just shook my head when I saw that. I was out a couple weeks ago and the temps dropped into the teens unexpectedly and i did throw my coat over the foot end of the hammock, which worked good enough, but I did not think about zipping it around. Love getting those little tips. This whole episode was good. I am going to go price some of that footwear right now. Glad I watched this. Giving the hot water bottle a good shake after you fill it and venting the created pressure before tucking it into your bag significantly reduces the chance of any leaking, especially on some off-brand bottles. Thanks Shug, great as always.

Another wonderful video. Love all those tips! I have one for your fans, if that is OK. I use hand and toe warmers a lot. Sometimes I only need them for about an hour or so until I have been moving for sometime. I find if you put them in a Ziploc bag, you can pause the chemical reaction because there's no longer any more air in there. You can then take them out of the Ziploc bag to restart the reaction. I can get a few days of use out of these handwarmers using this system.

Shug- You the man, you know man? A while back I took a kayak trip down river during a nor'easter for a couple of nights. I took my normal hiking gear, hammock, snug pack, down sleeping pod (wraps around bottom and top of hammock like a cacoon), etc. I was well prepared although it snowed and it was 30-40 knot wind. I do well in very cold weather but yes.. my feet often are cold even if I dry my feet and change to wool socks 🧦 before crawling in. I even had my footbox wrapped up in an insulated rain jacket and wrapped my feet in some pants I had. I spent hours rubbing my feet together and wiggling my toes to finally get them warm.. but it took some work. I'm a warm bodied fellow but I'll be daged on if my feet aren't a problem. I think the body robs the extremities during harsh conditions.

Mr. Shug, You hit the nail on the head. {again} . Muckalucks are great. My old Sorels were great, but heavy. Steger mades the real deal. Again, the detail about to much sox in your boot is right on. When I was a wee lad my great grandmother would knit us wool socks like the ones your daughter knit's and come to think of it they were awesome while sleeping in the winter. Those motorcycle booties are a great idea and I think I will have to get a pair. My wife and I use those flat rubber water bottles that have wool on the outside as a warmer, they work fantastic but the hole is smaller so can be a pain to fill if you don't have a small funnel. Pretty comfy though, a warm little water bed for the feet.

You can do the water bottle trick even with a PET bottle. Once it is under the covers/inside the sleeping bag it will stay warm for HOURS after initially pouring the water in. "just be you" That's why I couldn't compete. I'm boring as shit, but I LOVE learning AND sharing. You're doing a terrific job at all 3. I get to learn much of what I need AND come away feeling better. I've been looking for a long-term under-hammock solution (I have and love the OneTigris, but it's too small for me) so I'm researching and this video got me thinking about my (now seldom used) Big Agnes bag (slightly older version of www.bigagnes.com/Lost-Ranger-15_2) and how I might use it as an over-quilt with some slight modifications to create a better foot-box, THEN use my coat as you showed here (wish I'd have thought of that 2 nights ago) and as I was looking at how I'd do that, when it occurred to me I could cut the underside which has NO insulation because it's assumed that a BA pad will be used and I realized that there's holes and tabs in really interesting places and now I'm thinking that either I'm REALLY lucky, or someone was thinking of under-quilts because i don't have to do anything except run shock cord through the holes/tabs in the end and then around my hammock towards the ends, and the result is an awesome under-quilt without ANY modifications. I've had this bag for years and considered going as far as re-purposing the fill and I've never had this idea so I'm crediting you ;)

Love the videos Shug. The toasty toes work great for me. One trick I use with them is to put on a thin liner sock then apply the toasty toes, and then put on a nice loose wool sock. It seems to really rev up the affect of the toe warmers.

the sticky pack toe warmers saved my toes when I misjudged to temps. I roaded a tractor 7 hours in subzero starting about 15 at the end. I had insulated hiking boots with heavy wool socks and then it wasnt enough. So I had the packets with me and I added them. Toasty . they arent like a hot coal in your boot.

I usually do not have much of a problem with cold feet sleeping. Though, getting up in the morning even only down to 15 degrees, putting on my hiking boots to pack up make my toes go numb. Then it takes at least two miles of hiking before I can even feel them. Now I do have a pair of boots rated to -65 with reflectix on the inside. They are great in the morning, my toes don't go numb, BUT, hiking in them, make my feet sweat terribly. So I don't hike with insulated boots anymore. Happy New Year. It turned 2019 while I was writing this comment.!

Always interesting to see what other people do, thanks for the video. Some of my own tips: 1. Get boots that have Gortex liner so your feet don't get wet, this solves many problems. 2. Only wear your base layer (thermals) to bed, anything else will just compress the down in your sleeping bag and make it less effective. 3. Sleep on the ground with a roll mat and bivi instead of in a hammock. 4. Have chocolate before bed, sugar revs up your metabolism which will produce warmth. 5. Have a hot drink before bed, dehydration makes you sleep colder.

Icelandic wool is, IMHO, the warmest stuff on the planet. I've got two pair of socks and used to have a couple of sweaters that I got when I was in Iceland with the USAF. The sweaters are long gone, but still have a pair of socks and just bought another pair this past spring strictly for winter hanging and sleeping. I don't hike in them and only use them for sleeping. I've also used them with a pair of Western Mountaineering Standard Down Booties and my feet are toasty. Of course, I am in Tejas and am one of those "weird' guys who goes hanging and hiking in 100°+ temps. :-) And we don't get the temps in winter y'all get, but it can get into the 20's or even teens and for us, that's pretty cold. Have used the warm bottle trick and even put a bottle of warm water with one of those toe warmer packs inside a neoprene cover and it almost made my whole setup (TQ/UQ) too hot. But with those wool socks on, my toesies were toasty. I also used mil-spec mukluks and those are the bomb! Still have a pair somewhere and they're a rubber bottom with a nylon upper and will keep your feet dry and warm until you start to sweat in them. They also come with a set of thickish wool inserts that I even used around the house for slippers. May have to find those and come up there for hte Frozen Butt hang next year. :-)

Great info! BTW, I visited Yosemite late last month and saw the need for the frost bib first hand. I could not believe the moisture in atmosphere that cold.

This is not a foot thing. My son and I and his wife went to Mammoth Lakes backpacking in September as June everything was snowed in. We were in tents and I had a 20 degree bag. In the night my legs got cold and I remembered what Shug had said. I took a fleece jacket that was under my pillow and zipped it up and stuck my feet through the bottom and came out the top. Did not remember about the sleeves. I immediately felt my legs getting warm and was good the rest of the night. My son said his phone said it was 29 degrees. May not be cold for you but it is for me. Thanks Shug, one more gem to tuck away. Bruce from the city of orange in orange county California

1:57 Agree; When your feet are cold, the vessels contract and its even harder to warm them up with your blood. That's why you need to make sure that they are warm before you go to bed.

Good video, lots of good tips. I like to use "Smart Wool' brand socks over a thin pair of poly pro socks. Works good for me.
