Warmest Hunting Socks TEST | Darn Tough, First Lite, Smartwool, Wigwam, Cabela's...

I tested some of the most expensive hunting socks and some of the cheapest to find out what is warmest and what is worth paying for. In this review I dry tested and wet tested heavy duty winter hunting socks from Darn Tough, First Lite, Smartwool, Wigwam, Cabela's, and Lincoln Outfitters. These socks are the thermal base layers for your feet and were partly or mostly merino wool or other wool, some were boot socks and some were over the calf.

This experiment didn't include late season electric heated socks, since those cannot get soaking wet. The goal is to keep your feet warm while spending as little as possible by finding out what really works. Whether you are hunting deer, ducks, geese, turkey, pheasant, waterfowl, etc, when you have super cold weather, you need extremely effective socks you can depend on.

I'm up in Northern Minnesota and I can say your feet are the first thing to worry about as far getting uncomfortably cold. I hunt grouse and whitetail deer when temps are below 0 F so this is a highly relevant and useful video for me. Thanks, George!

Great test! I think you would have had better results if you put the socks spaced out in a pattern like numbers on a clock around the table. The ones that were closer together seemed to hold heat better which is probably because they where huddled together under the tarp. Keep up the great work.

I think one issue with this test is that the socks on the outside of the table are going to lose more temperature because they are on the end. The ones in the middle are going to have the radiant heat from the socks next to them so they will lose heat slower.

Maybe, it's possible, but they weren't touching, and I don't think any radiant heat on the fringes would have impact on the overall.

upstate NY here, I've worn all of these brands except First Lite and Lincoln Outfitters. In 44years worth of hunting whitetails from the Southern zone in NY to the ADK'S in the Northern zone, my go to would be Darn Tough's $35 knee high boot sock which wears like steel and keeps toes warm in knee high rubber boots for dark to dark sits. In a years worth of wear other brands.... I blow out the heels. Zero or negative temps and snow on the ground for all day tree stand sits call for light weight Darn Toughs paired with the old reliable white Micky mouse boots. just my 2cents

You cannot beat the durability and warrantee on the Darn Tough socks. They are also among the most comfortable and don't sag down into your boots.

The Darn Tough socks use extremely tightly twisted yarns, to pack more threads/fibers into a space, to up the durability. The problem with that, is that while this increases the durability, it also decreases the insulation capacity, because there is less trapped air space for a given volume/area. It is primarily the stilled air that is insulating. To continue with my earlier comment, a thinner Darn Tough sock makes a good baselayer sock for a thicker polypropylene sock to go over. It will last longer than many other thinner merino based socks. Another "secret" behind Darn Tough's durability is just that they tend to put more synthetic in the sock than other merino based socks, and I heard (though can't confirm" that they don't honestly list the exact fiber content/ratio, so there is even more synthetic in there than you think. Which greatly adds to their durability. Again, they make a great first layer, thinner sock.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide What I meant is that what they list, allegedly doesn't accurately represent the exact fiber content and ratio. A guy who runs an alpaca farm etc, told me that he found out that the yarn they use has more synthetic in it, and the way they calculate the percentage of merino to synthetic is not accurate, because they count the merino-synthetic blend yarn as just "merino" and then the synthetic yarn they blend into it as the only synthetic content. Again, I don't know how true or not this is, just relaying what I heard. Whatever the case, they do tend to be more durable than most other socks with significant merino content. That's one of the reasons why I like them as a liner/baselayer sock. Cheers

I get this is a sick test but what really matters for foot warmth is the socks ability to wick moisture and having a boot that is not to tight on the foot. Air space is critical in maintaining warmth. Interesting test though

KUIU's ultra merino over the calf's are THE warmest socks I've ever put on my feet and I've owned all of these brands other than Lincoln . I used the Black Friday discount to order some of their 'strong wool' this week. The Stone Glacier gray 'wool blends' are also super warm and durable. They've outlived some darn toughs if you can believe that.

Thanks for watching! I think the higher the loft the warmer they will be. The denser the weave, the more comfortable for walking and working. It's a balance. Higher lofted wool is probably best for home.

I bought some thick socks from Walmart years ago. Probably decades ago. Around $10 a pair for off brand. Was their thickest wool sock. They work great along with 1600 gram boots till I get below the 20’s. I switch over to heavier lacrosse buck tracker boots. The upgrade to the ice kings.

Good video. Innovative way to test the sock’s heat retention. Just a few comments based on 45 years of late season deer hunting in CT and Vermont. Most decent quality wool/wool blend socks are pretty comparable at keeping feet warm, as your test with dry socks showed. Therefore, I always placed more importance on the boots I wore than the socks. Pack boot with removable felt or Thinsulate liner was what I used for cold weather. Higher price does not necessarily mean warmer socks although it often means more durable such as Smartwool and Darn Tough, which has a lifetime warranty. Only need to buy them once. Which do you prefer to wear? I may have missed it if you mentioned. Thanks for sharing.

I have used 4 out of the 6 of these socks and my preference is darn tough. I’m not just looking for warmth, but also performance. How do they fit my feet? Do they slip and cause hot spots? Do they stretch out over time of use and washing? It’s tough to have all the best qualities and there is sacrifice that comes with it. I have been very satisfied with my darn tough socks and I like the fact that they will warranty them out when needed.

I couldn't agree more. This was really a 1 variable test, not a review. I should have mentioned something about that. The Darn Tough socks are hands down my favorite ones on the table. The fit the best, wear the best, and are the best to walk in. The First Lite and the Lincoln might be slightly warmer, but I still usually pick the Darn tough socks anyway, unless I'm just sitting in a deer blind all day.

Best part is I know the day they do I can just return them and get a new pair of socks with the lifetime warranty. The Darn Tough socks will not get holes in them for decades but they will lose a lot of the wool that is woven into them from wear. I have some I've worn a whole lot from 2010 and still no hole. Back in the day I used to wear something called 16 oz Icelandic socks. They were unbelievable at -30 and -40.

Interesting, We've been trying different socks here in Washington State this year. Just testing them in the field as we hunt. We've have some very cold days here this year, colder then normal. So far, the Fox River Extreme has worked the best for me, but I do like the Darn Tough as well.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide it’s always good when you find socks you can count on.! Fox River are made in Iowa, I just found them this year. I like the fit and feel plus they did a great job at keeping me warm. But we also wear Darn Tough to and I do enjoy them. Here in Western Washington we only get down in the teen or single digits maybe a week or two out of the year so it’s not a huge deal to have super warm clothing all time. I bought the High-n-Dry breathable because I didn’t need the added warmth. Either way, still enjoy your content. I started sharing your podcasts with a few hunting friends that are newer to the sport, figured they could pick up a few tips vs me taking their ears off all the time 😂

Nothing I've used is better than the Darn Tough socks for anything that requires movement. They are the best sock out there for walking, moving, covering ground, whether its ducks, deer, pheasants, turkeys, etc. I use them more than any other sock! And they are pretty warm too.

this test is so subjective. the Darn Tough socks are the absolute best for Western Elk hunting when you are putting on miles in steep terrain and not getting any hot spots or shifting or crumpling on the base of your feet. Very warm and great at transferring wetness as well

I like your test. It gives us all an idea on what sock we may want to purchase however, in my experience it’s your own body and activity that regulates your foot warmth. So people’s feet sweat more than others , some people walk more . I have found that the best foot warmer is a change of socks and keep the feet dry as possible and buy Marino wool with the highest amount in the sock. Also buy knee high if you like. Im from north east pa as well. I bought 1000 grams lacrosse rubber boots I wear one normal calf high sock and my feet get so dam cold, and its because my feet are soaked when i take them off. not doing alot of walking...to my stand and back.

Thanks. I just don't think the difference is going to be significant under the test conditions. There will always be an outside edge but I think the issue is fairly mitigated here. The tarp holds essentially no heat and there was cold dead space between all of them. It was super cold.

interesting but so many variables. As you mentioned thickness counts. Looking at the pic on the link the Darn toughs don't look very thick. Which is why they faired about the same as the Cabela's which have way less wool content but I know are pretty thick socks. Moving around though w/ feet starting to sweat the higher wool content wins. I was on a deer reduction hunt at the Indiana Dunes where I ended up having to walk around in ankle deep water & my gortex water proof boots were no longer water proof. Although soaked. My 80% wool Red Head socks kept my feet warm. I seriously doubt the 20% wool would've done the same. The 1st thing I do when looking at hunting socks is turn the package over & look at the wool content. Price is really 3rd after thickness or comfort.

I totally agree! The darn tough socks are the densest on the board. They have alot of material but there is less loft. They are the most comfortable to wear and walk in all day though and don't fall down. It seems for this test, loft mattered more than just about anything. The Lincolns are both super dense and high loft. But not as comfortable for covering alot of ground. Sitting all day, they are perfect though.

I'd like you to do a test the socks by where going everyday for however many pairs of socks you have and walk around in the snow with some tennis shoes on and a different pair of socks each day and document how your feet feel after that.

No test needed, I already know the results, wet, cold, and sick. Tennis shoes soak through almost instantly in snow. Nothing is going to keep anyone warm under those conditions.

When I purchase socks I always read the label to see how much wool is actually in them. Being on a limited budget I have been using some socks I purchased at Walmart, that look a whole lot like your top performer there, and similarly priced. I think they are about 75% wool. It surprises me to see how many expensive socks don't have all that much wool in them.

So, I've talked with sock companies, since making this video. And they tell me that the amount of wool used isn't that important as long as the wood layer is what makes contact with the skin. They say the socks can be more durable and warmer with other materials properly blended in, etc. etc. I still refuse to buy any wool socks that are not mostly wool.

Thanks! I have looked into Alpaca socks but haven't found any that were a high enough % of Alpaca to justify the cost to me. At least not yet. I have used some heated socks, they were ok. But not viable for most situations. I want to get a pair that have a remote and aren't made of cotton... those are non-negotiables. Once I find some I like, I'll definitely look at experimenting with them.

In that first test, what you're essentially measuring (and getting a difference between) is the thickness of the sock. That is the primary consideration for insulation. Next would be how densely knitted or not, then average size of fibers used in the yarns (finer fibers can trap/still more air per given area), then the actual material (wool, synthetic, etc). What I do is wear a thin alpaca-synthetic blend "baselayer" sock, and then wear a slightly oversized/slightly loose and thicker polypropylene sock over that. If they get wetted out, you can take off the PP sock, wring it out and/or whip it around and get rid of most of the water fast, and so it dries extremely fast and then goes back to insulating very well (and the actual material besides not absorbing any moisture, has one of the lowest thermal conductivity levels of clothing materials). You can't do that with a thick Merino wool sock that gets very wet (whether from snow, rain, sweat, dunking, etc). They take awhile to dry fully, especially when truly soaked. The nice thing about merino is the odor control and that it stays somewhat warm even when wet (but only up to a point). Wet is wet, and the combo of water's 24X higher thermal conductivity than air, and the crazy amount of heat transport/movement when evaporating/vaporizing WILL severely reduce warmth, no matter what material you are wearing. So best to get rid of the water as fast as possible to limit all that. And when you wear a thinner merino or preferably alpaca sock directly on your feet, then the polypropylene one over that, doesn't get near as stinky as it would when wearing it directly on your feet. Skin oils, dead skin, etc all contribute to the build up of synthetic odor as those stink producing microbes feast on these. The merino or alpaca acts like bit of a filter so that the synthetic has less "food" on it for the microbes, which equals less smell. I really wish hollow core, trilobal shaped polypropylene fibers (and yarns made from same) were a thing. Socks made from this material would be very light weight and very warm for the weight. Thinner alpaca baselayer sock with thicker PP sock made out of the just former, would be the ultimate cold weather sock system. Oh, btw, if you're going to go with merino wool over alpaca---best to go with something that has a high percentage of NuYarn merino. Definitely at least a bit better than regular merino.

Hey George, just fyi, one thing about the Darn Toughs is that they are "guaranteed for life" (pretty sure you don't get that on the lesser expensive ones on the list), supposedly no questions asked. You call them, tell them you have a hole, a tear, an elastic failure and they send you a new pair. I'll be testing that. Had pair of cabelas (Cabela's Deluxe Cold-Weather Wool Boot Socks for Men over the calf $18) that developed thinnest and holes after about 10 yrs.

The Darn Tough socks are hands down my favorite ones on the table. The fit the best, wear the best, and are the best to walk in. The First Lite and the Lincoln might be slightly warmer, but I still usually pick the Darn tough socks anyway, unless I'm just sitting in a deer blind all day.

great video, i have been struggling with cold feet while hunting for over 40 years, i do not find wool to be nearly as good as everyone makes it out to be for keeping warm, i have bought so many pairs of high end hunting socks over all these years and have found the non wool socks to be the warmest. my favorite pair of socks are original "heat holders", however they do tend to wear out fast and get holes but they are the warmest i have found. they are made from 91% acrylic, 5% nylon, 3% polyester, 1% elastane,

@@TheNewHuntersGuide yes, i have 2 pair of electric battery powered heated socks, but i wear knee high boots and they are a pain to turn off and on with the boots on and the power switch being down inside my boots, but they do work well when turned on, i also have a couple pair of ThermaCell heated insoles with a remote, but sometimes the remotes don't work very well to turn them on, and sometimes only one will turn on with the remote.

It's a fair point. Either way your dealing with an unrealistic temp range, above 100 or well below. The lower the Temps, the slower they will drop and the less dramatic the results will be. Makes the measurement margins lower. I'm planning a part 2. I'll give it some thought.

I think you need more space between the socks and to eliminate the tarp covering the group. The socks on the interior of the group have a district advantage as the air around them is being warmed by the adjacent sock/warm water bottle to either side.

The tarp is not even close to tight, it was just keep the bulk of the wind off of them. If you remove the tarp then the socks with the tightest weave will have a disproportionate advantage becuase they will keep the wind out more, but on the body and in a boot that does not impact warmth as there is no wind.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide You can cover them individually if you want to eliminate wind, but placing the test samples that close together will cause the samples to influence one another through radiation. Those samples that are located between two other samples will lose heat more slowly than if they were separated, because they are receiving radiant heat from the samples on both sides. The shared covering will also facilitate heat transfer/conservation between adjacent samples via convection and reduced temperature delta between the sample and the surrounding air. The end samples are disadvantaged compared to the middle samples. You indicated yourself that you didn't trust your results. Close proximity between samples, along with the shared covering is one of the reasons. Take it from a professional thermographer. You can always validate it yourself by repeating the exact same test scenario and sample spacing with no socks at all. If your test method is valid the test would yield little to no temperature variation across all of the samples, regardless of their position.

It's possible but I don't think anything was holding heat on that frigid day. The tarp isn't at all insulating. It's just a wind break, not even close to air tight. The tolerances just aren't enough to make a difference at the scale were measuring.

Also, as others have noted, the socks in the center held heat much better than the ones on the edges. Redo your graphs from left to right and you will see the bell shaped curve that simply shows you’ve proven that socks on the edge lose heat more quickly than socks huddled together in the middle. Just like 5-6 people in sleeping bags in a tent. Folks in the middle definitely stay warmer vs those on the edges.

George, I find this test super interesting. Being from VT and a big fan of the darn tough brand(lifetime warranty woot woot)(after trying many others) I'm going to postulate a reason while they came in so low. I believe that Darn Tough has superior wicking even if their heavyweight sock. I normallu run the midweight all year because of how warm them are. I'm thinking more airflow through sock made the water colder but when they're actually on a human foot, they feel warmer but not letting feet sweat and get cold. Just my .02 but you said it yourself, they are way warmer than what they showed in testing. Curious to see your thoughts!

You know, I've been thinking alot about it. The Darn Tough is the tightest woven of the socks, which is probably why its so durable, but there is less fluff to catch air and that is probably the reason. I am not sure yet if they wick better or dry faster, but I do have an idea of how to test that in the future! The Darn Tough socks are the only ones that I would give an A+ rating for wearability. They just fit the best, stay on without falling down, and are hands down the best socks to walk any distance in. I think they are the best sock on the board, but they were not the warmest when tested like this. I'm not gonna stop using them, actually I plan to buy more lol. But I can say the First Light and the Lincoln are a warmer sock for just sitting there, nothing else factored in. But is that little extra warmth worth the decreased utility? It depends on how you hunt. The Darn Tough are also the sturdiest. I cannot see the some of the others lasting half as long. I do have an idea to test which socks dry the fastest, I think I will do a base layer test first and if it goes well I'll try it with the socks.

I had the ankle height hiking weight for my groomsmen because I know how cushy they are and dress shoes suck. I have some extremely warm wool socks with very loose weave but they slide and you sweat and I'd always take the darn toughs.

It's possible, but I think it's a long shot of a "may". There was no radiant heat to speak of and the tarp wasn't holding any air, just blocking wind. If there was any impact, I doubt it was significant enough to impact the results. Conditions were very even. It was so cold; everything had the heat sucked out of it in seconds.

Darn Tough may have rated lower because of the nylon content, which is part of what makes them tough. Darn Tough also does not seem to have as much loft as others, again due to the weave to be tough.

I think its 100% the loft. The Darn tough are the best socks of the bunch to wear when active. They are the toughest and most comfortable when covering ground. Marno could be anything. Be careful what you get. I used Alpaca wool this fall. A little better but not worth the price.

If we want more thickness, instead of buying one thick wool sock, couldn't we just add more wool sock "layers" (more thinner wool socks)? I also wonder if adding, say, the thinner DarnTough layers of socks to equal the thickness of the thickest sock you tested, would cause the DarnToughs layers to perform as well as the cheaper but thicker wool socks?

Well, conventional wisdom from those who study these things much deeper than I is that you are better off with 1 heavy sock and several lighter ones. Adding socks increases constriction on the foot and movement in the boot, both of which impact blood flow and overall warmth. Now that is just a rule of thumb though. I suppose if you had two very loose-fitting socks, that were loose even when stacked, with plenty of the room in the boot, there would be no downside. However, in my experience, putting one sock over another almost always increases the net tightness.

For me I cant stand wool socks that have that huge thick seam across the top of the toes, its so uncomfortable. I have Smartwool, Darn Tough, and Ascend. I prefer the Darn Tough over the Smart Wools because they seem like they fit my feet tighter and they aren't owned by as big of a corporation. Bit my absolute favorite of the three is the Ascend socks because they fit really great and they are cheaper than the other two.

I mean, wear a good quality warm sock but if your boots are good its not rocket science. If you are sitting, a thick wool sock is a thick wool sock. If you are moving alot, there is alot more too it. Comfort, sagging, moister management, blisters, etc.. all come into play. Better socks make a huge difference then. But in a deer stand, a thick wool sock with good boots and some hot hands thrown into your boot will do most of all that can be done.

You can't test evaporation on days when it's that cold. I'm not sure how you even engineer a test for "handling humidity" but I'm open to ideas. I did a video testing how fast Merino vs. Synthetics dry, you may find that interesting but it was base layers, not socks.

I disagree, the non-thermally reflective tarp normalized conditions between the end and middle by negating the wind. Ambient temperature and airflow were even at all points on the test board. Any differences would be inconsequential with the scales of measurement being used. Keep in mind most of the sock was not in contact with warm bottle, it was just excess fabric, the position of which doesn't matter.

I don't think any of the speculative logic I've seen in any of the comments conclusively proves anything, and I've answered all of them. This test obviously worked. The data aligns with the general theory of loft to warmth ratio, and all the results follow a logical pattern based on the variables and input assumptions. BUT, I'm sure the methodology could be improved. Give ideas on how to improve the test for a part 2.

Only heated socks keep my feet warm. No boot or sock (I've tried) can keep my feet warm after sitting a couple of hours with the temps in the teens and 20's unless somebody can recommend a boot that keeps your feet warm in stand for more than a few hours of sitting.
