The Biggest Lie In Turkey Hunting

The biggest lie in turkey hunting is optimizing your choke tube and turkey ammo for long range hunting. Whether you are using Winchester Long Beard lead or Federal, Apex, BOSS, HEVI-Shot, or other TSS ammunition, the average range turkeys are shot is 20-30 yards. So, working to get extremely tight patterns and high pattern density at 40-50 yards is the wrong place to focus. People are spending a lot of money on ultra tight turkey chokes and buying boxes of them to get extremely tight patterns at max range, but it ends up hurting the hunters with more missed birds. Turkeys are moving targets and shotgun shooting and mounting positions are compromised when shooting from the ground which can throw your shot off by a few inches, causing you to miss if the pattern is too tight.
Here is my podcast interview with Jimmy Muller: www.newhuntersguide.com/2024/...
Support the channel on Patreon: / thenewhuntersguide
Shots do take place at extreme ranges of 50 or 60 yards sometimes but that is maybe 10% of shots, and to make those shots, many hunters have patterns so tight that they miss the turkeys at 20 yards or closer maybe 30% of the time. It is much better to engineer patterns with lots of margin of error at regular ranges, with still some long-range capability, than to focus everything on extreme range. That is costing hunters more gobblers than it gains them. Instead of buying 30 ultra long-range choke tubes, you probably only need about 3, one for short range, medium, and long range. This is across the board for Carlson's chokes, Muller chokes, Patternmaster, Indian Creek, and many others. #turkeyhunting #gobblers

I ALWAYS said "turkey Loads" is a huge marketing scam.... I have taken several Toms As well as Hens. And I have never used a so called Turkey load. I use a 28 gauge. And just plain #6 or even 7.5 shot. With factory full choke. I have even taken turkeys with #9 basic Lead target load, As well as Cheap steel shot Using modified choke.. However with that being said I have not taken a Turkey over 22 yds..

I agree with most of your points in this video. I've been hunting t 13:40 urkeys for over 30 years. My go to is 3.5 in. Hevi Shot 4s with a factory full choke. I missed birds when I went to extra full tubes as you said. To tell a novice to use a IC choke and trap loads is just poor advice and it's wrong. Turkeys are so large they look like they are close at 50 yds. You should have also mentioned the red dot sights to improve your kill rate. You had them in your gear list but not in the video. You hit the nail on the head about gun alignment from a sitting position.

Another good informative video George. I have some boxes of old game loads prior to ammunition companies removing turkey from the suggested load chart on the back of the box. Sure it is fun stretching limitations as i also have long range turkey setups, but within 30yds a #6 game load in 12ga is fine with a full choke. The last few toms I've shot were with a cylinder bore flintlock with plain lead #6. A load that doesn't hold a candle to a 12ga target load, and has a comparable effective range as a 410 #8 target load.

His comments/observations are very true. People tend to get caught up in all the new technology and marketing videos, etc. A good example is the 6.5 creedmoor for hunting. It only has a slight advantage at ranges exceeding 300 yds when similar established cartridges out perform it at hunting distances. Companies made a lot of money on the 6.5. I have missed many turkeys at close range by being over choked, but there have been times when I needed a rifle. Tight patterns need exceptional sights and a steady hand to assure you are on target. Really like this guy!

Ok, i’ve had a chance to watch the video and I agree. Two days ago I was in Cabela’s looking for turkey shells. I couldn’t help but think that this is BS went to the other end of the aisle and got a box of number 6’s, two and three-quarter inches long. I wouldn’t say I’m a turkey killer, but I’ve shot a couple with a Remington duplex load, 4x6, just 2 3/4 “ in length. I remember buying that box in 91 when I was discharged from the Army. They patterned great. I was always curious if they patterned so well due to the fact that there were fewer pellets in the load and that may lead to less deformation of the pellets as well as an easier time getting through the choke.

those old lead loads work. Im a big fan of #4 and #5 lead in double x, super x or just remington nitros. and they make fine 40 yard shells with right choke load combo. Good video and great point, we all get caught up in the next best things! I know guys around here that in the 80s-90s used #2 lead and would neck/body shoot turkeys. I have handloaded #3 nickel plated lead, It hits them like a ton of bricks. and the turkey eats just the same! there is no shot size restriction in my state by the way.

I really like everything you had to say. I followed the hype and got a Carlson long beard XR choke for my long beard XR ammo. It made really tight patterns. But this year, just to try it out, I put up some patterns with the long beard XR ammo and my pattern master code black goose choke. Long story short, that gave me more consistent patterns even though they weren't quite as tight. There was a lot less holes and groups in the patterns. It's very possible to overdo the choke

I like the implication of tss for something like a .410 for youth - and in my case i couldnt get my grandpas old single shot 20 gauge with factory full choke to pattern any ammo past 35 yards effectively, so i switched to tss. Ironically, i shot my first turkey with it with tss #7s at like 17 yards. Now i inherited a 1980s mossberg 500 with 20" barrel. Bought an on sale carlson choke, paid $20 with tax for longbeard xr #5s and it shoots well enough out to 50 yards that i can confidently blame myself if i ever miss.

When I started down the it needs to be a tighter pattern road I was taking turkeys with a regular full choke gun without changeable chokes. I missed a few but wasn’t the guns fault. Then I got Turkey chokes and a gun that would stack em a lot tighter out to 50 yards or so. I started missing those close range shots where they just come up over a crest in the hill inside 30 yards. I can say I’ve missed more close birds because of the tighter patterns than I’ve ever gotten at farther ranges because of the tighter pattern. Maybe that isn’t the case for everyone but has been for me. To each their own. Happy hunting 😊

Most of my turkeys are in the 15-to 30-yard range. I use an Ithaca Mag-10 with a fixed full choke, not because it is a big gun, but because it happens to fit me better than my other shotguns, enabling me to hit what I am shooting at. Also, I am currently using magnum lead #4 loads, but this is because I had purchased a lot of 10-gauge shells that included old lead waterfowl shells that are banned from waterfowl use now. It was hard to beat $90.00 for ten boxes of 10-gauge ammo. One thing That puzzles me is when I see a hunting show and they miss the turkey and all the way out there to 60 yards the hunter keeps missing as he keeps aiming for the head. If that happens to me the body is going to get some pellets in it.

Good video and analysis. Two key points to note, however, that may conflict legally with the advice provided in this video. In the jurisdiction (Quebec, Canada) I reside and hunt in, Full chokes are legally the minimum requirement to hunt turkeys, with Turkey chokes being recommended. Conservation Officers can and will check your chokes if you encounter them in the field. Also, legal shot size for turkey hunting in my jurisdiction must be between #4 and #7 shot, and specifically excludes 7.5 or smaller. So be very aware of your jurisdiction's legal requirements before implementing some of the advice provided here.

But there are natural laws/limits that govern the actual hunting and killing that cannot be breached by dollars, ffp mil 3 lb scopes, 10 round chassis horsesh1t rigs lol. It is a money from wallet separating operation, case closed. Keep up the good work! My 940 18.5" turkey pro should be here within days, the Holosun EPS green mrs is already here lol. Heck I may even have to go find my first turkey because of it but bought it for fun, bear/camp defence, and coyote/wolf calling so most likely will be running an IC or M although I've ordered IC, M, F for it. You've got a point! However, TSS has a valuable place. I've been around the turkey woods fifty years and watched the trends from ten gauge, to 3.5 inch shells, etc. I've lugged heavy shotguns for more years than I care to recall. Hunting style comes into play. I'd rather stay home than sit in a blind over decoys, although many hunters need to hunt that way and enjoy it. I've walked over twenty miles in one day hunting in the Western turkey haunts. What TSS does is open the door to sub shotguns. One can set up a single barrel in 20 gauge, and probably in 410 gauge, and be as effective as a heavy 10 gauge with long barrels loaded in lead loads. To each his own. There is a place for TSS because it is a game changer. Necessary? Of course not. It is, however, a great load for sub shotguns and opens many doors. I've toyed with the idea of a double barrel with one loaded for long distance and one for short distance. The issue I've run into is mounting a red dot, which is a requirement for my turkey gun. Additionally, there is the issue of both barrels hitting close to the same. I'm waiting for a shotgun company to recognize the value of TSS in a double 20 with a real mounting position for a red dot. I'll be the first customer. I'm aware of everything on the market and there are a couple of heavy 12 gauge turkey shotguns set up for a red dot...there are none in the sub guns. Heck I'd buy the 28 gauge.

I could not agree more bro - the main reason for higher pellet counts are to impress consumers and raise an unreasonable standard and for "insurance" when people try to take turkeys and rediculous ranges. Pattern density drops of DRASTICALLY per 10 yards especially 50 and beyond. They are going bigger just to one up themselves. The ONLY reason for a 40 yards and in turkey hunter to insist on these insane patterns would be to wack a coyote or hog (larger game) incidentally while turkey hunting. Otherwise it is over-kill and a waste of money.

@@Jonhuntandfish G5 Montec Carbon. The best. Incredibly sharp, the point enters where it hits, small shank, very nice taper for no resistance. They are tough even after a pass through and they're in the dirt and rocks. Front between the waddle and the beard. Side high in the gold patch. Rear tail up in the bullseye, tail down between the shoulder blades. The feathers are tough and resistant, a G5 carbon will cut the feathers unlike mechanicals that push through or bounce out.

I think it's all about location. I hunt around a lot of feilds. Those birds are hard to get close. They like to hang up in the middle of the feild at about 80-100 yards. Most turkeys that I've killed, I coaxed them over a small hill. I only killed one turkey within 40 yards. They just don't come close to me where I hunt. Long range chokes, barrels, and ammo really make a difference for me. It's all about perspective I guess.

BRO!! I'M WIDJYA!! 50Years of hunting turkey! Last 35 years listening to the marketing crap of which you speak! I have studied/researched bbl lengths/vs "backbore"/ different types of fixed choke/POLY-CHOKE( MY FAV)/ SHOT-STRING vs PANCAKE PATTERN/EVEN...developing my own theory( provable: if ANY ONE PELLET DEVIATES 1/32 of an inch from dead center exiting bbl/ it can be off as much as 1.5FEET@48 yds!!) Multiplied by particular number of pellets in particular load, and it creates a possibility of consistant misses. Which is why I love muh poly-choke; screw open if Tom is running in/screw tight iffen he "hang's up"!!😅

I’m pretty skeptical about that considering how many older generations of turkey hunters like Tom Kelly that talk about having to run and get a turkey before it flys off because of the type of loads you describe. And how many turkeys 🦃 were saved by not coming in that extra few yards.

You can take bad shots and long shots with any load. They will all produce poor results. But missing at close range because you choked for 50 yards is just as easy a way fail at taking the bird home.

Because TSS is more effective patterns and it handles long range shots if needed...but if your patient and give the bird a chance to work its way to you a long range shot isnt needed . I shoot TSS and a full choke (not x full) from my 20ga. It has a pattern at 20yds that is bigger than a paper plate but still plenty dense to be very deadly at 50 yards and further. All the extra pellets in TSS allow for the more open pattern and still be able to kill reliably at distance. Are they expensive? Yes. Do I need them most of the time? No, first turkey I killed with TSS was from a 3.5" 12ga at about 6 yards, my phone tagged the picture of his head as an octopus... Let's be real though... you get up at 4am every day, spend lots of time driving and lots of money on gas, perhaps spend money on a lease, walk miles on end up and down hills, when a turkey is standing there, I don't care if the shell costs $50 as long as it works. It is a drop in the bucket.

Tell me, if you disagree so vehemently with the viewpoints expressed in this video, assuming you watched it all and got the total picture, what ironclad information are you basing your position on? Why do you think laser tight long-range patterns are advantageous for the average turkey hunter? I am systematically analyzing the market trends, advertising, media, hunting history, and social media reverberations across platforms to conclude that the status quo is driven primarily by corporate greed that drives hundreds of strategic highly crafted messages bombarding hunters constant telling them what they should want and buy. And every person I talk to, who has hunter more than a couple years will privately, though often not publicly, share numerous accounts of birds they have missed at close and regular ranges because they were choked and setup for long range. I've also ran the ballistics on pellet energy, size, and density, along with having done 50-ish field tests with patterning/ballistics gel across multiple spheres of shotgun hunting that support my conclusions here. I may not be right about all of my points. But is it not possible that there is more to this than you're convinced of also?

I never see anyone tell the truth about pews, chokes and patterns. Fact is::: no two pews pattern the same!! You can have the same two pews same chokes Different patterns Just because it patterns good for your favorite uTuber Doesn’t mean it will do the same on yours!! Same goes for loads. They all shoot different in different pews and chokes. Moral of the story. It’s cheaper to buy a choke and see what it likes Not buy your favorite load and buy 10 chokes for it. Every load will fly different from the same brand and model of chokes and pews. Experiment for yourself what works best…… for you!!!!!
