Very nice, never seen one of those. My grandfather used to design those for W&S. I think he worked for them until the late 50's when he retired. Got a nice letter from the W and S.

I used one with bar feed for 3 years in mid 70's. It was made in the late 40s i believe possibly earlier. There was an enormous amount apparently of ww2 Era machine tools available after the war. I wonder if a man could still find work for one ?

I used to run brass and steel limited-run production parts on a similar Gisholt No. 3...Old as the hills, circa 1938... When the customer wanted us to do his complete part family, the boss replaced the old timer with a Mori Seiki CNC turning center... I did enjoy the time I worked on the old No. 3, though...

Looks like a good machine, I ran a Herbert number 4 for many years, pre-operative, paid $1500 for it and sold it when i retired for the same amount, I think the Herbert has the edge on your machine, but it should be able to suit a small shop, the machine makers of their day made things to last right.

That's a "Capstan" lathe in British parlance. Both capstans and turrets possess turrets for tool mounting (in addition to the front/rear toolposts on the saddle/carriage (and maybe a "third slide" for parting off), but the difference is a capstan like yours has its turret mounted on a ram (with limited travel) mounted on a second saddle or carriage A turret lathe's turret travel is not so restricted, the turret saddle can move all the way from the right hand stop to as far towards the headstock as the cross slide saddle will permit... not limited, as capstans are, by ram travel. Explaining the difference between the two types of machine used to be a college test question in the 60s / 70s... A turret, it dawns, will have power feed to the turret mounting saddle, to move the saddle, not the turret ram... and dead stops on a shaft running parallel to the feed shaft. Capstans have stops extending from the right hand end of the ram, which index in conjunction with the turret.

What exactly is this type of lathe used for? I'm guessing short length large diameter production work?
@altuspienaar76793 жыл бұрын
This machine can be set up with a multitude of different tools allowing a semi skilled operater to produce bigger numbers of the same part. This one is for smaller parts. It was the fore runner of modern CNC machines.
