Thanks for the memories! Spent a lot of time running various turret lathes over the years! They could still be economically viable on many many jobs. Thanks for keeping yours alive and well! 😊😊

Thanks. I’m always interested in learning more about turret lathes. I have a Herbert #3 that I’ve cleaned up and set up in my shop. It seems to be in exceptional condition. It was used mostly to turn some kind of brown phenolic resin/fiber material. Post anything your heart desires on this kind of machine.

Nice job on the cosmetic restoration! I might be picking up a #3 Warner and Swasey lathe very soon. I'm wondering where I would find collets for it? Do you know what kind of collets it uses? Also can I put a regular chuck on it? And if so, how does the chuck attach? Does it screw on or bolt on? Thanks.

This exact same model lathe chambers every ar barrel coming from one of the biggest players in the game. Four tools on the turret and an good operator and you can chamber a ar barrel from start to finish in 1-3 minutes depending on the caliber. The auto stops are nice but we don’t trust them for the precision needed to cut the counter bore and finish ream. The main downfall to this machine is after two years of running it 50 hours a week, just looking at it makes me hurt. The part locking mechanism destroys your shoulder, the dial indicator spinning around makes you go cross eyed but don’t blink otherwise your two thousands deep and the barrels junk, shifting gears and spinning the turret around works out the arms and core.

How would you rank the no. 2 versus something a little more modern like a Hardinge HC Chucker or a South Bend Heavy 10 with the turret ram attachment? I see those alongside some Hardinge DV59 in my area, but the No.2 for sale near me looks super beefy.
