A masterpiece,william holdens beautiful performance,lee marvin turned down this role saying it was too much like his film THE PROFESSIONALS 1966.but marvin did suggest to peckinpah that the bank robbers dress as soldiers.john wayne said this film destroyed the western.

I'd love to hear Wayne's rationale for that belief.
@greva2904Күн бұрын
@@aaarauz1Wayne thought big stars like William Holden should only play cowboys as clean cut heroes, not cold blooded murderers. There isn’t one heroic cowboy in this whole movie, much to Wayne’s fury. John Wayne genuinely seemed to think that cowboy movies were portraying America as it ought to be, with the good guy always winning the day.

I get it. JW was a bit of a cardboard cut out. I am glad the western took a grittier, more graphic tack. Realism. I worship at the throne of Lee Marvin and he would have been amazing as part of this cast but I’m not sure where he’d fit. Holden was craggier and fit as Pike. I think I need to rewatch the Professionals and Point Break.

Peckinpah ‘s classic flick is the un-glorified realistic way the end of the wild West came about. The growth of the U.S. military and the reach of the federal government, essentially put an end to the wild, chaotic and outlaw ways of the old west. The feds are shown putting their stamp over the new territories of the U.S. The constant presence of the U.S. military in the film reflects the determination and commitment of federal officials to stamp out the wanton violence of the cowboy culture in order to establish order and the military as the sole guardian of ‘law and order’ in the west. The older wild bunch of cowboy culture was on the way out. The opening scene of kids engaged in the spectator sport of pitting a lone deadly scorpion (the wild bunch) vs the organized ants (US military) swarming their opponent, is a graphic testimony of the changing times in the “wild” west. There’s a new and permanent boss in town.

Hope the fact that this is a recent upload means that Warner are finally releasing a new transfer of the film. The current blu ray isn't the best and it really seems like they haven't touched it since the 95 re-release. Surprising that they didn't bother when it was the 50th anniversary though.

I thought it was interesting, an eyeball-opener, and indicative of the best Cinema-photography technology of that era...along with Sam Peckinpah's skills, when he was somewhat sober, LOL. In fact, during The Wild Bunch's initial showing to the press, apparently Sam, Ernest, and Holden were pretty well-pasted from an all-night celebratory bender, LOL...The video of that 'showing may be on-line somewhere. Thanks, and have a good day, SM.
@Wotsitorlabart5 күн бұрын
My understanding is that Peckinpah ladled on the gore to actually repel his audience - for them to to react against the violence. If so, he clearly didn't understand the baseness of human nature
@deckofcards875 күн бұрын
Same. I dislike a lot of the camera techniques in the film, actually. Especially the wonky zooms that unfortunately feature in so many late 60s/early 70s movies.. IMO, it cheapens what should be an engrossing cinematic moment and makes it look like tv from the era. Kubrick and Robert Altman were exceptions when it came to the zoom lens fad and did it tastefully. Peckinpah not so much. BTW this is my only criticisms of him because I actually like a lot of Peckinpah's films, in general.
