I watched this show from th beginning in 1969 to its end. I was 11 in 1969 And my dad raised me by myself for my first ten years- when my stepmom came aboard it all changed. My dad and I had that kind of relationships he would even take me to hear jazz on Sundays when it had a dry bar between 2 and 5pm. I think it made her angry She was an ex nun and not very warm. Tomorrow my dad will be gone 11 years. The last 23 years of his life he got wise to her gaslighting and my father and I reclaimed our relationship which pissed her off more. This theme song could have been our own Pop, I love and miss you- proud to be your son- Thomas Struska Jr

It always gets me that Harry Nilsson, whose own father abandoned the family when Harry was 3 and pretty much messed up Harry's young life, could write such a charming song about a father-son relationship. Although I did hear it was written as a song about a girlfriend first and then just changed slightly to be about a father.

I saw that movie years after the TV show and like you I didn't know that there was a movie first . By the way , that was actually Glenn Ford playing Eddie's father in the movie , not Henry . I know that because I remember he played Jonathan Kent in the first Superman movie with Christopher Reeve . It was an easy mistake to make , no biggie !! As a woman of 56 I also struggle sometimes wishing I had a good father who didn't verbally abuse us. He took us from my poor single Mom for 5 years and they were the worst of my life. He still did it as an adult and I had to let him go, but my siblings, niece & nephews still see him. The feeling never leaves you.

I must've seen them in the late '70s too, as I wouldn't have been old enough to remember the original run. One of the networks must have been re-running them on weekday afternoons, because I remember this show came on right after something else we watched regularly (and there was nothing else then but the Big Three Networks, plus PBS!). I can't remember what that show was, but I definitely remember watching the opening montage and theme song many, many times (even if we didn't always stick around for the whole show).

I grew up thinking parents who loved their kids spanked them. I was so sure of it, yet didn’t like to admit to my friends that I was spanked when they weren’t. When I became a mom, so much of what I thought was normal and loving parenting were things I couldn’t do to my own daughter. It pains me that a show a long time before I was born got it, but my parents still did it to me.

I DO remember "Love, American Style". When I would get home from school it was on, as was Courtship of Eddie's Father. I don't know if they were on each day (this would have been early-mid 1970's so the shows would have been in syndication by then). And I sort of remember Gilligan's Island and the Monkees being on as well. Not sure if all four of these shows were on the same channel, or if I was spending 2+ hours in front of the TV before my folks came home from work.

I always loved this song! Even though I had a daughter, this could've been our theme song from all the silly fun we had, making up Yo Mamma jokes, flying kites, playing hide and seek, from peek a boo and Saturday morning cartoons to playing the first Matrix game. Then we kinda went our separate ways, she went the way of Runescape and I got sucked into the World of Warcraft black hole. My heart goes out to all who missed out on those moments in life with a parent or being one.

Which season(s) was this opening montage from, does anyone know? I found another version of it where most of the video footage is filmed on a beach, but this is the one I remember seeing as a kid: a lot of running, swimming in the pool, and riding in that tiny MG. I think I liked the theme song and intro more than I liked the show itself! 😊 What a great memory from the early- to mid-'70s. ✌✌

I remember the show fondly from when it was in syndication in the 70s. But the lyrics of the song describe a situation that is not healthy. The singer seems to use his son emotionally as a substitute for adult friends and even for a spouse. It's healthy and normal for a parent to relive the joys of childhood through appropriate play. Making one's child one's best friend is not. It's what is sometimes called "emotional incest."
