When he was working on creating it Reinhold Weege spent several nights sitting in the gallery at Manhattan night court. From what I understand the only unrealistic part is all the time they waste with their personal issues.

@Gabe Stein I'm a fan too. Night Court could go from silly to serious to get you thinking, in a heart beat. Which made it such a great show to watch. I was getting ready to respond, "not stupid" also, but then, I was given to thought that folks that I grew up with, would say someone or something was "stupid". It wasn't meant to be disrespectful but more in acknowledging unbridled, silly behavior of the individual or group spoken about, as opposed to intellectual deficiency or behavior. Just my thoughts.
