“Wherever I May Roam” by Metallica from the album Metallica © 1991
Lyrics:
(And the road becomes my bride)
And the road becomes my bride
I have stripped of all but pride
So in her I do confide
And she keeps me satisfied
Gives me all I need
And with dust in throat I crave
Only knowledge will I save
To the game you stay a slave
Roamer, wanderer, nomad, vagabond
Call me what you will, yeah
Oh, but I'll take my time anywhere
Free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll redefine anywhere, anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home, yeah
(And the Earth becomes my throne)
And the Earth becomes my throne
I adapt to the unknown
Under wandering stars I've grown
By myself but not alone
I ask no one
And my ties are severed clean
The less I have the more I gain
Off the beaten path I reign
Rover, wanderer
Nomad, vagabond
Call me what you will
Yeah you will
But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere
And I’ll never mind anywhere, anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home, yeah yeah
But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind
And I'll take my time anywhere, anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home, that's right
But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll redefine anywhere, anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home
Carved upon my stone
My body lies, but still, I roam yeah yeah
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam, roam
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam, yeah
Wherever I may wander, wander, wander!
Wherever I may roam, yeah yeah
Wherever I may roam, yeah yeah
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam

You're making me feel old, kid! I first heard "Blackened" and the And Justice For All album in High School, but it had been out for a while. Then after about a month of listening to AJFA more or less nonstop, I purchased everything from them I could get my hands on. Particularly enjoyed RTL and MOP. A few years later the Black Album came out, and I picked that up too without a question. When I got it in my ears, it was different but more refined. Guitars sounded different, more compressed, but not bad, and James had come along with his vocals as well. The Black album represented the start of a shift for the band, and I think had they not done that shift and taken the risks around it, they wouldn't have stayed relevant or been as successful. I'm glad they did what they did. Roam here remains awesome, and in my life, as I have had to part ways with things, situations, ideas or people, I return to "the less I have the more I gain". Sometimes you're better off moving along. Take the experience and muscle through, pack your shit and go on to new adventures. That's what this song means to me, anyhow.

Man, this song will always have a special place in my heart! Back in the early 1990’s, I used to frequent a club in Wichita Kansas, called the Rock Island Club! Located near Pawnee and Oliver, this place was a staple for live hard rock and heavy metal bands! The local KICT 95 DJ Rocking Rick would DJ on the weekends there. Every time I requested it, Rick would play Wherever I May Roam! Man I miss those times, great times! Let me know in the comments if anyone else partied there like I did! Peace ✌🏻!
