The entire insurance industry is built on a single simple concept, which is this - the insured pay out as much as possible in premiums while the insurer pays out as little as possible in claims. Otherwise the industry wouldn't even exist, let alone survive. When insurance is compulsory it becomes little more than being forced to buy into a bent card game.

Exactly! That’s why I stayed with Admiral, because of previous positive experience. Insurance companies are all loathsome though. Admiral charge £20 to change ANY details and also changed my account to make my wife the lead without asking, out of wokeness, when we had already decided how we wanted to conduct our account between us, meaning that I had to ask my wife to get my access back, so that I could deal with my own insurance!

Absolutely. I was in Thailand in December 2004 and you know what happened on Boxing Day. I was having so much trouble with my travel inurance company that at the point the claims manageress complained about the amount of overtime she was doing sorting out tsunami claims that I did actually weigh up immediately paying a visit to the office to shove her phone some where unmentionable. I did remind her that 300,000 people died and all she had to worry about was a bit of overtime.

I have been ripped off by insurance company who insisted I installed a tracker box. I'm 62 years old, no previous claims. Problems, allegedly my tracker is not responding? I did what I was asked to do, remove and reinstall, I did. Two months later I got the same warning,I must return the tracker box and the new one supplied, I followed instructions. One month later they warned me to put the tracking box again otherwise my insurance will be cancelled. I emailed them and told them truthfully I never interfered the box. Few weeks later six months into my insurance policy they cancelled my insurance. Next I got a police warning that I have been driving without insurance ., surprised me. I immediately got another insurance and had confirm that I have been refused insurance before !!!! My new insurance is double the cost, I never received a refund for the remaining term of my insurance. Daylight robbery insurance company. 😢

Someone went in to the back of my car on a motorbike once, wrote my car off and then Claimed it was my fault. (he admitted at the scene it was his fault, he was going too fast, didn't seem me until it was too late and tried to swerve but couldn't) the insurance company wanted me to admit it was my fault, I refused. They appointed a third party investigator who concluded it was the other drivers fault but, they still wanted me to admit it.

Something that I discovered relatively recently is that the comparison sites are actually owned by, or are connected to, an insurance company themselves. You can usually work out which one because they will generally be the cheapest quote that you get on that particular site.

In what way is it scandalous? You only have to look at the cost of repairs to a modern car with all the fancy bits on and electric gizmos and then add the insurance admin plus the hire car charges etc, etc to see that every accident claim can cost £1,000s and then you look at the frequency of those accidents to individuals and you soon see the justification for the charges. My daughter's Mazda 3 was punted at the rear last w/e at a give way junction, denting the rear plastic panel and she has just been notified that the insurers consider it a write off. It will certainly require a whole new plastic rear 'bumper' that I would guess at dealer rates to be £100s plus labour and the possibility of hidden steel panel damage and a panel respray is not going to be less than £1500. Its not surprising that the car will be sold for salvage or repair that will probably see at least £500 being a Cat D or N, but that then will devalue the repaired vehicle. The annoying thing is that her new car is on order and due for delivery at end of Sept, so I guess she will be sharing ours for the next 6 weeks. FYI the tosser that hit her car was driving an M Sport BMW and driving too close. The legislators and manufacturers are all complicit in the excessive cost of car accident repair.

Trackers - My experience is that it is impossible to get a perfect score. When my son had one fitted we noticed that scores were given according to the time of the day, the type of road, how rough the roads were, your speed, your acceleration, your braking and cornering. Just for the hell of it, we tried to get a perfect score. It was totally impossible. Worse, within a few months Aviva took away the granularity of the scoring, for our benefit and convenience of course, leaving us with just an overall score. This was always mediocre bordering reckless for what I consider to be reasonable and very considerate driving. Needless to say we sent back their nasty tracker and insure with other providers. Then we had to repair the damage the installers did to the car when they installed the tracker.

The company I used to work for had trackers, there was inconsistency between the cars, some black boxes rarely bleeped and some black boxes chirped like canaries, must be how the sensitivity settings are set up by the installation technician. In my 30s, I remember one insurance company offered a price well above its peers. My suspicion is that they choose to deter some groups of drivers, based on their risk experience.
@mwalmsley72
@mwalmsley72 Жыл бұрын
They all do that. Each company will go after target groups at certain times to manage their risk profile vs revenue at the time. It’s no different in other businesses (supermarkets are a prime example where 1 item is much cheaper but others more expensive). That’s why it’s pointless when people say “try x - they were really cheap for me”. Because your risk will be totally different and it’s another day so the company will have changed their profile anyway.
@flygrace
@flygrace Жыл бұрын
I find the problem with reviews (and this is not just insurance but many other things) is that companies pressurise customers into giving a review as soon as they have signed up, or bought an item. So most people are only reviewing the initial ease of setting up the policy. And with items, nobody waits to see how long something lasts or what faults it may develop with use. So the majority of those 5 star reviews are essentially meaningless.

One thing about insurance companies - cheaper is not necessarily better. I think most people just get car insurance cos it is a legal requirement, but it really is worth paying a bit extra to a company that will actually pay out in the case of an accident without weeks of arguing.

I do look at comparison websites but it's sometimes difficult to compare like for like and for the last few years I've used a broker for home and car insurance. They usually find cheaper quotes and on the few occasions when they are more expensive, the difference is negligible. My view is that if I'm unfortunate enough to need to claim on my insurance, I would rather be dealing with a company where I can speak to the same people I have spoken to for years and be able to go into a physical office should the need arise. IMHO, that's worth paying a little extra occasionally.

My insurance on my Land Rover was £21 a month, I had 16 years no claims, then after having a seizure and ending up in the canal I made a claim as fully comp and the insurance company managed to find a 'loophole' and close the claim down, I had only been insured with them less than 2 weeks, so no payment, lost my vehicle, not allowed to drive anymore due to medical reasons...... I guess at least I am still allowed to insure and move my boat around and at £11 a month fully comp I guess it isn't too bad 😁

Car insurance organisations seem to be a “law unto themselves”. What hurts most is there’s no getting out of it. By virtue of a statutory requirement to be insured to drive ‘said vehicle(s)’, Joe public are sitting ducks, simply stepping forward, with little or no choice, to get fleeced. From where I sit (now long into retirement) at my extremely modest 2000 (yes, 2K ) miles per annum in a semi-rural region, it’s money for old rope for these insurance companies; the greater majority of whom are only in the game to get rich (very) quick!

One really good point you mentioned, saying that insurance companies can no longer charge more for exciting customers over new customers. This is a really good thing. But they still charge diffrent prices for new and exciting customers. This dosn't seem right.

Personally I think there's a few things they could do, making a transparent searchable database where you can check risk scores against a number of variables. For example you could check risk scores of on street crashes, burglaries in your area, and even things like national percentage crash/cost of different vehicle groups. I speak as a food courier, we're the most expensive class of insurance yet in the last couple of years I don't know a single person in my area who's had a crash regardless of fault, yet we're all spending between £100-300 per month, despite having years of NCD and no accidents on our records, so I personally would want to see where how they justify it, so we can work on reducing our cost to get insurance.

I sold car insurance for a while. I remember the young lads, just passed their test, who had taken a bank loan to buy a car. They wanted something speedy. Some if not all of these trackers are fitted to the cars diagnostic port. This port (from other KZbin channels I've seen), is not designed to be used continuously, as in the case of these trackers. In several instances the tracker actually trashed the cars electronics (because they are badly designed and made on the cheap in a certain country)?and the the insurance companies will not accept liability for repairs, because they say it can't be proved. Is the amount you are going to save in premiums really worth the headache and expense of a broken car? 😤

OMG.....that happened to me (false claim against me). As I was reversing into a parking space, someone drove past the front of my car (in a one track drive) as I was reversing and pulled the front bumper off my car. Despite giving clear information of the accident, on the phone, in writing and with a diagram, my insurance company paid out to the other driver. Not only that, the description of the accident was incorrect. It stated, I was (forward) driving into a space and hit the other car which was waiting to pass!!! I didnt find this out until I filled in the questionnaire to insure my new car and was told I needed to change my answer to being in an accident and being the at fault driver. So I am still paying a higher premium because of it. I found the whole thing so stressful, I couldnt cope with challenging it.

About 20yrs ago, I was involved in an accident with a cyclist whilst I was turning right at a junction - I was stationary for about 3 or 4 min waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic, when a cyclist overtook my stationary car, realised he wasn't going to clear the next oncoming car, so swerved back to me & hit my car denting the door & breaking off my wing mirror - I was stationary the entire time. Passing police attended,, took details, breath test etc & no further action. However, my insurance, deemed me at fault & being stationary was irrelevant they said " you have a duty to other road users, & my positioning on the road, forced the cyclist into the path of oncoming traffic" (I was on my side of the road, against the centre line with indicators on) they did say that I could appeal, but if I lost, they hinted that I might find it difficult to get insurance) as I had protected NCB I just left it & changed provider at renewal Sorry for war & peace, but even after 20yrs it still winds me up 🤬

Prices have vastly increased from July. I was playing around trying to get my dad a better quote, and noticed that if you switched from Fully Comp to 3rd party ( the actual legal requirement ) the price multiplied 2 or 3 times. A broker told me insurance companies are working to eradicate 3rd party and make us all have fully comp. How is this allowed , 3rd party is a legal requirement yet insurance companies are effectively forcing us purchase another service which is not a legal requirement. In my view Insurance should be nationalised at least at a 3rd party level.

Have you appealed on the basis the lane was not clearly marked? Get out right away and take current photos for evidence in case it gets remarked. There are also regulations that define what is required to make it legal, the rules are a bit more lax now but generally they must follow what is set out in 'The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016'. If this is a County Council you will be able to appeal to the independent adjudicator if the Council rejects your appeal. I've not heard anything positive about the boxes. More often that not, it has lead to an increase due to box events triggering charges. I recently bought a new car which had all sorts of electronic aids built in; fatigue monitoring, lane keeping, blind spot and all of that sort of thing. You can set your chosen level of support for these via various menus, generally Hi/Med/Lo, and some you can turn off. The salesman told me that I should turn off the lane assist as the car decided to 'steer for you' when it thought you were drifting out of lane, even if it was just marking in the roads. How does 'insurance' view this? Can they check your car after an accident and try to say it was your fault because you turned something off?? I believe some of these features are considered when arriving at NCAP ratings, so if you disable them, you effectively de-rate the car's safety.

Sometimes if you have an accident its cheaper and more beneficial to not even notify the insurer and pay for the damages privately as the extra cost of compulsory charges for making a claim then the extra cost of losing no claims bonus causing rising costs on future insurance deals which in turn makes the insurance redundant as you don't use it as you sort the damages out without notifying the insurer. Its like a forced scam in some situations

Just for information, those little plug-in insurance devices get plugged into the diagnostic port in your car and they can ruin your cars computer. Which is worse: A little more in insurance? Or another car/car computer?? I would definitely opt for the extra few dollars in insurance. Thanks Daniel. I just went through this myself. It's crazy what you have to pay. Plus where I'm at it's mandatory so the insurance companies really put the screws to you every chance they get. My insurance went from $210 to $128 a month. @@BlackBeltBarrister I fully support your Barristers advice, but here is a typical example of "I knew someone who died because they wore a seatbelt". Maybe a bit harsh, sorry, but hearsay is not evidence, eh? The plug-in gadget just plugs in to the cars OBD (On Board Diagnostics) port, that every car now has (OBD readers are plentiful on the open market, even Bluetooth ones you can use with your phone to read), it can read current speed, volumetrics, and other engine related info, and fault codes. Yes, they can be used to reset the P-Codes (Diagnostic codes) but will not damage any of the the cars ECU's. So no, it is not a tip, do some investigating first... Just saying, be well...
@pichacker

I can assure you that these devices will not destroy your cars ECU's. Purely reading OBD commands is not a determent to the ECU and is indeed part of the ECU's legislated functionality. This goes for all the black boxes however be aware that the devices do draw a small amount of additional power from the battery so if you do not drive your car much and only on short journeys they could assist in you eventually getting a flat battery. Now a flat battery is a sure way of upsetting a cars electronics.

Had a joint car/bike policy a while back, the prices were good for a couple of years and then they lost their way. So now every year in July I need to go through the car and bike policies, car seems to need to change every 2-3 years, but bike I have been with the same company for about six years now, they always come in cheapest or will beat whatever I get off the comparison sites. Always get the legal cover and used it successfully a few times on the bike, first time I got the first contact from the solicitor whilst in hospital about to get the x-rays. Often cheaper to get a package with all the extras rather than just adding the couple you want, or buying elsewhere like breakdown. My other recommendation regarding insurance is, get a dashcam or helmetcam and make sure they are always working. They are always useful if you are in an incident and may also have the effect of restraining your own driving too as you know you are being recorded.

If third party motor insurance was not compulsory many more problems would arise and they would be of a more serious nature. Would you like to use roads that were full of uninsured drivers? If you, as a pedestrian, were struck by an uninsured driver and suffered life changing injuries, what then? In 2020 UK motor insurance claims totalled 13.5 billion pounds. Driving performance monitors ARE a scam…They are set to show poor driving, to justify not providing a ‘good driver discount’. The degree of reduced acceleration, gradual braking and gentle cornering are so mild that you will need to be a road menace and obstruction. We had them to our works vans in a delivery company I spent many years with. The device showed a traffic lights colour scheme to alert the driver if a parameter was breached…and reported back to the Depot. Point being, just keeping up with normal traffic produced Amber and Red warnings. Taking a roundabout as gently as possible produced Amber warnings and to brake, anything much more then just letting the vehicle slow naturally would register as heavy braking. They were diabolical…eventually the company ditched the scheme.

It was very expensive considering I'm 50 + years old and having fallen out with the company i had a vehicle with. i had no no claims discount. I went for the cheapest, which had a black box to plug in cigarette lighter. The 1st month was ok, i am a good driver with no points ever on my licence. The second month i used the car less but was getting msgs sent to me via text saying your driving is poor , and the same with the 3rd month which seemed unfair. I spoke to a relative of mine who had a similar issue with the same company. I think it is a con in my humble opinion. I was glad that a 3rd party crashed into my parked car, which i wasn't in at the time. After that, experience with the black box i will not entertain another policy that comes with a blackbox . I would rather pay extra. And i seriously hope im past safe driving age or dead before all the motor insurance companies say YOU HAVE TO HAVE A BOX to get insured. As im certain it will come to that.
