I hesitate to tell others what to do. I am 80 yrs old and have been on the same farm all my life. When raisingt pigs you should never let the feeders run out of feed and pigs should always have water in front of them. Pigs should have feed in front of them all the time from 5 days old to processing time They will make you more money feeding that way than trying to ration them. Cutting the green material " Banana plants and such" for them is good, but should not be used as a replacement for the grain or mixed feed in feeders. The pig will choose a balance of what it wants to eat and do very well. I bought a bunch of pigs at a sale one time and got a disease called Necro and tha put me out of business for awhile. Many died and I lost alot of money. Never buy pigs at sales. Raise your own from your brood sows. The best mother pig in the world is Yorkshire, they have large litters and give a lot of milk. The fastest growing pig is Duroc. Breed the Yorkshire sows to Dueroc Boars and you will do well with them. You have a nice white young sow pig there almost ready to breed. Breed her to a yorkshire and save the gilts for sows Best wishes. Good luck in the future. I watch all your posts. These are guidelines I used for raising good profitable litters. I am not telling you what to do.

I would breed that sow to a yorkshire boar and raise my own sows. Yorkshire sows have the most piglets per litter. Then breed those off spring to Duroc.@@countrylifemyfarm4885

Im not so sure this is meat pigs, like yorkshire and birkskire etc pigs are. I think these are breeder pigs and you can not give them unlimited amount of food like grain etc since they will get fat and breeder pigs can get 70% fat and 30% meat, meat pigs like yorkshire you get more muscles if you give them more grain etc but thats not the case with breeder pigs since they get fat and it will be expensive fat. I totally agree with giving meat pigs food so they have food all the time. Some breeder pigs get so fat they get problems breathing. Have a great day!

Hello, I am so sorry you had such a great loss. You must miss your sows so much, especially Chit she was a beautiful sow and had such a sweet nature. I really feel for you, and I hope this year will bring you good luck.

This may sound harsh, but uh, as you've been doing this for quite a while, didn't you have quarantine policies in place? Was this your first purchase ever of market piglets? And as a note to everyone who raises their own farm animals, ALL new animals should be quarantined. I learned this the hard way many years ago when bringing in some new chickens. You need to give it a good 4-6 weeks for both sides, the new AND the existing, or you can lose your whole flock. Or in your case, a whole drove of pigs. So sorry for your loss though.

In the future if farming is going to be you main income source , buy piglets from trusted breeders who vaccinate and care for their animals the way that you do. Also make a separate barn far from the house to quarantine the new piglets for a month before mixing them in with your own herd. All the best Kieu. Love your channel ❤

The young piglets you bought from the market looked very healthy, so did the sow and her litter you bought from the farm, the sow was very impressive and I thought she will give you many litters of piglets in the future. So at what stage did the virus get into the farm. The one thing I noticed was no thought was given to the cage that the piglets were transported in; but the big one overall was the vehicle the sow and piglets was transported in, (very dirty) nor the vehicle the piglets were transported in. I know , you know from my previous comments that I hate traders. But traders attend many farms in a given week (as do their vehicle's) and are the greatest carriers of diseases. So even if they come just to view your animals for possible sale, have pairs of large disinfected boots on hand to make them wear before they enter your barns, Have your own disinfected cage's on hand to catch animal's for sale and don't let traders cages which have visited 60 farms that week enter your barns. Trader's, visitors are the greatest carriers of disease so make them act more responsible . The key word in your video was that the first sow was sick two weeks after the new animals arrived at your farm. New animals have to be quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks to a month before allowing them to be mixed with existing stock. You are a very good and responsible farmer and I am very annoyed that this happened to you. The worst aspect of this whole scenario is that even the experts don't know exactly how African Swine Fever is transmitted, It a virus in the air ? Like such which killed millions of angel fish in fish tanks world wide in one week in the 1990's ( mine died whilst i was away at a course in another state and my mother in law was looking after my fish, she was devasted, and felt very guilty; but I never told her it was a worldwide virus and nothing to do with her. You take your wins when they re on offer.) Or is it manual transmission from farm to farm via contact ?

Hello my friend, I am a small livestock farmer for many years. I rarely buy pigs from outside to the farm. But this time I plan to increase the pig herd to make more profit. But unfortunately, African cholera wiped out the pigs on the farm. For me, a small farmer, it is a huge loss. I don't know when I will get back what I lost. This is also a great lesson for me to learn for next time. I listened very carefully to what you said, I learned a lot from your advice. Thanks a lot.

Ms. Dunbar, I don't know what country you are from, but I follow your comments every post. You are clearly a very intelligent and knowledgeable person. I know nothing about these matters, but it seems that an experienced person as Mme. Kieu should know not to mix newly purchased pigs in with the existing herd. I am also not clear on why she insists on buying semen rather than keep a bar of males to impregnate the sows. Perhaps you can explain to us. Couldn't she just as easily use the young gilts that remain and use them to breed further herds? Gardis, USA
@sandradunbar33911 ай бұрын
I have only been watching this channel for a couple of years and from this I note as a maximum they only kept three breeding sows and generally obtain up to two litters from each sow each year. They raise each litter to around 90KG to 110Kg and then sell. On an operation of this size one boar would be sufficient but most likely not worth the expense of feeding a large animal all year with associated vet fees and then the animal may not be a good breeder anyway so you have wasted your money. By using AI you are purchasing a known fertile sperm and when the sows come in heat, then you use the purchased semen. Generally you get a larger litter by this method and you don't have a large animal eating large amounts of expensive feed basically doing nothing, whilst awaiting the previous litter to be weaned and also giving the sow a couple of months minimum to recover her condition before breeding her again. A further aspect is that say in the west its difficult to sell an aged boar as its meat is generally considered tainted and suitable only for pet food etc. So at best you can only sell at a quarter of the purchase price of the replacement boar. Buying small litters offsite to just raise removes the sows costs and from purchase to resale is therefore a shorter period. But of course you have to pay for a two month old feeder pig which can be expensive. This farmer was looking at this alternative method of income from pig farming but unfortunately purchased just when an epidemic was commencing. Proved to be a very costly exercise and terrible to have happened to such a excellent farmer. @@Gardis72
