@Jinesh, there are 2 separate issues. The ‘paperlike’ texture is to give you a ‘paper-like’ writing or drawing experience. The screen protector is really not needed. The glass is very tough, I believe it is GorillaGlass and will not scratch easily. I still have my old ipad3 which is over 10 years old. No case, no screen protector, just the standard 3 fold magnetic cover. I have used it constantly on the field everyday (I am a contractor) and never had a screen protector on it. It has been dropped so many times, construction debris and all sorts of granules have fallen on the screen. Everytime I thoroughly wipe the screen, it is as good as new.

This review feels like it was made by someone who isn’t part of the intended market for these kinds of screen protectors. For people who use their iPads primarily for drawing and note taking, textured screen protectors are a must. They improve the writing/drawing experience drastically. I have been using one for a few months now and I absolutely love it. If you want to use your iPad primarily for illustrating or for note-taking, get a matte screen protector.

A matte screen protector, yes. Not necessarily Paperlike. I’m an artist. I used Paperlike for a long time. But when I bought my new iPad Pro in 2020, I got a new Paperlike and it was awful. Had horrible scratches on it after just a couple of days use and I had a horrific time getting the air bubbles out. I bought a 2-pack of some off-brand ones and they worked perfectly. Months later, zero scratches. Not a fan of the new Paperlike. They just didn’t work for me.

@@kendrachu I’ve had my current one since the end of February and it has no scratches at all. I got my Paperlike in early February and had to replace it at the end of February with the Paperfeel because the Paperlike had too many scratches to be usable anymore. To be fair, I had my original Paperlike on my previous iPad for 2 years and it never got scratched up. i feel like i need to join this discussion. i also have the m1 ipad pro 12.9 as well as the paperlike screenprotector. i agree that you get this "kind of noise" on the screen. ok for me because it's marketed as a screenprotector for people who use the pencil and not for people who mostly color-grade on their ipad. further the scratches shown by Ben are nuts. i use my ipad 6 days a week 7 hours a day with the pencil and my paperlike is as new as it was when i applied it one month ago. so i agree if you would like to mostly color-grad don't buy the paperlike. but as said paperlike is for people who need the ipad mostly for drawing and not color-grading or other "only-display" related tasks, because to use lightroom i don't think you need the paper feeling of the faders... ;)

Well, if you add a paper which turns your surface more rough, what do you expect to happen xD Ofc there is gonna be some refraction, but this is basically for people who cares more about the touch & feel, rather than 100% screen quality. And no, it is not supposed to reduce screen glare outside, reflected light it is always gonna be coming from the roughness of the surface, so if it is reflecting a point light, that reflection always will be wider. This is for 2 kind of people. FIRST: Ilustrators, concept artists or whoever uses the apple pencil for something else than a random note writting. SECOND: For the people who hates fingerprint marks all over the screen. I hope all this info helps, I bought paperlike 2 and had it for over a year.

As someone who writes and draws on my iPad all day every day for my work, I can tell you that the benefits outweigh the downsides. Yes, the image is degraded; yes, if you have a heavy hand you’ll mark the protector (it rubs off); and yes, it does weird things to brightness and colour. But if you are using the pencil for hours a day, the bite you get from the paperlike is a bloody godsend.
@vlkhvan

I think the problem with Paperlike is with their advertising. They clearly say that it doesn’t affect the image quality, and it sounds like you don’t lose anything but get better drawing experience and protection. And all for $30+. But in reality you do get degraded image quality. So why lie? To sell to those customers who are not drawing, obviously. Professional illustrators understand the benefits of such screen protectors and ready for this trade off - image quality degradation for better pencil control. But unfortunately, pro illustrators is a very small part of iPad users. Thus Paperlike tries to convince the rest of the iPad users to buy it as well with the lie like “buy this, you lose nothing but get better pencil experience”. And of course they spend as hell sponsoring KZbinrs. In practice, for majority of users it is not worth it. When 70% of the time you consume content on the device it doesn’t make any sense to apply something that degrades the image quality, whatever those paid KZbinrs say

speaking from an illustrators point of view , paper like is awesome in the sense that it does give great texture and works well with the feel of drawing on the iPad Pro. I have a few points , number one I think that its over priced and that can really make people want to blame it for allot of things going wrong with their experience. I have buyers remorse every time I order a new set of paper like for sure , the good out weights the bad separate from the price .... the price is just bad and can cause me to find reasons to return it. I don't think other reviewers are giving bad reviews and or paid reviews ( I follow a decent amount of the well known reviewers as well as the not so well known ) everyone has said and or brought up allot of your points in their reviews . Like someone said in the comment the good of paper like out weights the bad. Number two , I bought paper like knowing the fact that its texture can do damage to my nib through time as well as it creating a somewhat muted version of the actual brightness of the iPad. I find some of your findings ( especially in regards to photography ) as a bit exaggerated , I find my photos to not be as heavily effected by paper like at all . I think editing on an iPad should always be taken with a grain of salt in the sense that you will go to one extreme or the other .. with the paper like your colors might be a tad muted but not so overly effected that you cannot get the sum of what your working on , same as when without the paper like the colors can be a bit over saturated and not so true to its supposed colors. Working on a tablet has its pros and Cons in my eyes and cannot beat using a properly calibrated monitor. I know this is your experience and I get it , but I've been using paper like for over 3 years ( from the first version to this one ... TBH either or works great ) and I've gotten the total opposite experience with it . I know the one thing that will always be a major con , enough for me to find other faults with it is the price. That price makes me hate it and won't allow me to give it a rave review on my own channel , I felt the need to mention my experience here to sway others from going the alternative route , I've tried almost all the alternatives and I assure you paper like is the shit . Paper like will never get more from me then this , because again the price got me admittedly pissed and I am very petty at this point . I will sub though because your channel looks cool peace !!

I don’t think you’re exactly the target use case for the paperlike - a lot of its shortcomings will be true of any matte screen film, and what the paperlike is trying to deliver the most is an incredibly consistent surface feel over the stock glass. To artists primarily using their iPad for Procreate / CSP, that feature may vastly outweigh any of the issues it may also have (noise, daylight visibility, surface marks.) it does for me which is why I’ve been using it across three different iPad Pro generations - I appreciate that it gives my iPad Pro a very similar feel that I’m used to from Wacom Pro tablets. It seems if you need to do hyper detail critical work such as photo editing, a glass screen protector or even the base screen would be the best way to go. I’ll admit Paperlike could ditch some of its marketing claims though - there’s no way ANY matte film will improve visuals over the naked anti-reflection coatings. For me however, since I only ever use my iPad Pro inside in lower lever lighting, and I’m used to the matte coatings of past Wacom displays, the Paperlike continues to be feel right at home for me. (I’m also not sure if I have a lighter hand than some artists, but my Paperlike has been applied for almost 2 years now and looks about 90% as good as it did new, so take that as you will. Not to mention since they come 2 in a box it’s nice knowing I still have another backup for the future.) Lastly side note: you’re wrong about the Paperlike causing vignetting around the screen edge. This is a shortcoming of the XDR backlight array and happens even without the Paperlike applied. Almost every review of the M1 iPad Pro mentions this. Personally it has never once bothered me on my M1 even on white canvasses.

I’ve had my paperlike screen-protector for about 2 years and unfortunately I have to agree with this review! The noise really triggers me every time I pick up my iPad. The texture they’re so praised for goes away after a year or so of use, at least in my experience. Then the mat-finish … It causes light to spread out on the screen, which is great when there is no direct light shining on the screen, but when there is direct light, the screen iPad just becomes invisible and thus the iPad unusable. The scratches which the screen-protector gets so easily are probably the biggest issue. When the screen is off your iPad looks like trash because of it… I would only buy this if your an artist whose main usage of the iPad is drawing, otherwise this high price is definitely not worth it.

This is dumb. Its like people dont understand what they are doing with a textured screen protector and just think its going to be magic... The very act of putting ANY screen protector on a screen will diminish the screen brightness as you are adding an extra layer of material for light to travel through. And no matter how transparent a material is, like water, there will always be a point at which the material blocks all light. Furthermore, adding texture to a screen protector is going to kill uniformity. This means light will struggle more on certain spots than others at a microscopic level. This will give you a textured surface imitating paper, but will also result in more varied image degradation (which you refer to as graininess). As far as glare being occluded, that only makes sense, have you ever seen frosted glass? That effect works the same way, by texturing the glass... Also, Texture = friction, so you'll obviously wear down your nibs faster than with a smooth glass surface. To reiterate, you aren't wrong in pointing out these things, only in portraying them in a negative light as if it was a product flaw. It's not... its simply basic physics.

Isnt this just an issue with Matte Screen Protectors in general? (The "grainy"/wet display look)
@Ilovegagaification
@Ilovegagaification 3 жыл бұрын
It is. I have a more generic brand and the only reason I got it is because drawing on the iPad (which is the entire reason I got an iPad) was awful with the slick glass and hard plastic. Especially going from the surface pro with surface pencil, which I think is honestly still a better drawing experience but procreate is just a killer app. My first one had issues with making colors off, but my new one is good. I also got some silicone nib protectors incase I saw wear and tear, but I’ve been using the same nib since 2018 with no issue

When I see KZbinrs recommending it, I can hear in their voice that they really hate it. They are just doing it for the money. Perhaps they have a separate iPad that they actually use.

He obviously bought a 2020 paper like screen protector and added it to his 2021 12 inch iPad Pro think it would work on his 2021 you actually can’t find screen protectors for new iPad Pro yet because no one made it for the 2021 model yet

@@NicVandEmZ it's sold for 2021 ipad as well and it's the same as the old ones, these all defects inherent of textured screen protectors, at best they can refine manufacturing to make these issues a bit less visible. main problem with paperlike is the amount of shilling and the exorbitant price

You saved me from wasting money. I saw this product and thought it would be really neat for when I'm drawing... can count that idea out now!

Thanks for the review, however let me add my 2 cents here. I have been using PaperLike for about a month now. I still have no scratches. Perhaps this is a bad idea for a M1 12.9". I have an 11" which is a different screen technology. I don't really notice this difference in color quality you mention. I wonder if this screen protector is really incompatible with the new HDR display but for the rest is fine. To be fair, I use my iPad for drawing, painting and reading mainly. For all those tasks the screen protector has enhanced my experience. However If I were to use video, photo editing etc. this protector would be a terrible idea.

Which paper feeling screen protector do you honestly recommend?

If you use the Apple pencil whatsoever, it's worth it. It really bugged me lot at first but I quickly got used to the slight dip in resolution. I found the paperlike reduced the glare as well. But I'm also on a standard iPad, not a Pro, Air, or Mini.

Agree with you on many points (no matter paperlike or not, matte screen protector will do all of that), but the vignetting effect is already there without the paperlike. A bit annoying but thats a mini led issue. I got used to it

I have the paperlike. Definitely not the "worst" screen protector I've had. Was a super pain to put on but aren't they all? I bought the iPad only for drawing though. So far I'm happy with it. I paid for mine by the way. I wish I had sponsors but I really don't.

Though I'm not attempting to discredit your experience, I feel that even if this screen protector may not suit you it doesn't mean it's not a good option for others. So far I love my Paperlike Screen Protector. I only notice the markings if I'm just being too rough/using too much pressure. For $20 per screen protector, it's honestly not that bad for general drawing use.

Thank you! I just bought the new M4 iPad Pro 13” and I was looking for a textured screen protector thinking of editing photos. I don’t want that slick feel. But this video is making me second guess that. What do you recommend for photo editing as well as media consumption and drawing for pleasure?

Interesting to see this from the view of a non drawing-artist. I use my ipad 99% for drawing on procreate and sometimes a bit of google research. It has all the "issues" you said, but the feeling of paper with the non stick feeling of touch on the palm and sound of the pencil give it a nice work experience that does make a difference when you draw several hours a day. I was even against paperlike when it came out because I considered it way too expensive until I got it as a gift. Really enjoy it now, but I do get your critic. Basically its just worth it if you draw or write a lot.

I draw with Procreate a few hours per day, love my Paperlike! No scratches, and I don't even hear the noise anymore.

I draw for about 5 hours a day in Procreate and had to remove my paperlike after less than a week. I’m not particularly heavy handed when I write or draw, but the scratches left on the screen and the drastic wear on my apple pencil nib made it a huge nope for me. I think paperlike has different versions of their protector out there. Some folks never experience the deep permanent screen scratches and their pencils are fine. But there are also lots of artists like me who have had terrible experiences and will never try the product again.
