Warning: Keep a safe distance from La Jolla sea lions when visiting San Diego

There’s calmness about the waves crashing in Point La Jolla but there is chaos down in the Cove.
Visitors are again getting dangerously close to sea lions in La Jolla Cove. San Diego park rangers are now sending a warning to people to keep their distance from the sea lions. It’s pupping season for the sea lions and that makes them more vulnerable and more aggressive.
You can see pups who are only a few weeks old trying to feed from their mom at the bottom of the steps, right where swimmers and visitors are legally able to share the space with the protected mammals.

It's heartbreaking, infuriating, and disgusting to see how careless, selfish and dumb people have become. Even as dumb teenagers out horsing around (back in the 80's) we knew not to disturb or harass the sealions. These aren't locals or native San Diegans doing this crap. Unfortunately, it's not gonna stop unless they block access to the beach. Even then, I'm sure some idiots will still do it, it's just the way people have become (no respect), but hopefully it can be minimized.

Every year these people do this in La Jolla and I don’t understand why no barriers are set up to protect the sea lions, especially since it’s pup season. There are many spots these people can go to in La Jolla with no sea lions, I mean just a few blocks away, so it’s frustrating. Also if they do try and touch one it’s 10k fine. If one bites you it’s going to cost extra as well because these things can do damage and have bacteria in their mouths.

Out of all the beach space, they honestly cant give that area to the sea lions, they talk about "balance"; theres no balance when people are that close. This is sea lions natural habitat, give them their space. Didnt think people could be so dense and get that close, its no wonder zoos have barriers.

It’s sad that there has to be more than ONE sign. This place has MANY signs and it’s still not enough. Common sense is no longer these days. What’s worse is that if the animal protects themselves and hurts someone, the animal is put down or punished. I agree that the stupid human should be fined or arrested.

All the people that are so upset about this sea lion problem should stop wasting their time with these comments and instead they should write letters to the federal government that oversees the amounts of fish the the commercial fisheries industry is allowed to harvest and the mile long nets that they are allowed to use that completely wipes out millions of fish that these seals and gamefish rely on to survive. They wipeout millions and millions of fish as they come close to shore to spawn thus making them susceptible to being easily exploited with no regard for their place in the ecosystem. The gamefish, birds, seals and normal people now have to target other fish species that don’t multiply as quickly because the sardines, herring, menhaden or squid that used to be readily available keep getting wiped out by the greedy commercial fishing industry and the tactics used and approved by the division of fisheries. End result is wild creatures of all types have to go where the food is and where it used to be. They managed to do what was thought impossible and depleted all the fish in George’s Bank a large area off of Cape Cod that was paved with cod, haddock, Pollock, halibut, swordfish, herring……. everything all gone now. Idiots filling their pockets now with no regard whatsoever for the future.
