Personally, I wasn't looking forward to this album much, because I don't really like American pop and I know that Jungkook loves it and planned to do an album for the western market. In that sense, I think I underestimated him, and forgot what he was bringing to the table as a performer, AND as a curator of good western pop. I've ended up really liking the entire album and listening to it a lot. It made me remember how well-chosen all the music was in the Golden Closet films. The lyrics in some of the songs on Golden aren't amazing, and I think that's where some of the haste shows. But he knows how to pick good pop songs, he picked 10 with a nice variety of sounds here, and then he elevated all of them with his voice and performance. Western media being what it is, he's going to get criticism for it "just" being a pop album and "just" being in English . . . and there's a probably even an idiot journalist out there who will say he's "just" ripping off MJ dance moves in SNTY. But when you think about it for a second, who else in the world could do something like this? Much less super quickly. He selected 10 hits from the enormous amount of material that was sent to him. He was able to perform and record all of them with a wide range of vocal techniques and styles, at about 3x the speed of even his ultra-talented bandmates. He can sing a crazy technical song like SNTY while dancing like Michael Jackson, pulling the vocals and dance off flawlessly, and do it all in a language he's not fluent in yet. There's no American performer who can do what he's done here in their native language of English -- and certainly no American performer who could do this, then turn right around and record a "k-pop" album in Korean and go promote it on Korean television shows. He's really operating at a different level from other people in the western market -- or the Asian market -- and it's pretty obvious that this album was done quickly almost as an *exercise* for future efforts. It's no wonder BTS and the individual BTS members are viewed as a threat. This album probably won't have the huge place in my heart that JITB and Indigo and D-Day do, because western pop isn't really my thing. But it is a joy and a BIG accomplishment.

I agree with you 100% this album showcases JKs voice and what miracles he can do with just his voice 😊💜 🫠 he is golden indeed, Namjoon is right ! I too wish Jack Harlows lyrics would have been better, or someone else would have done the rapping part. Thats why I prefer the 3D version without the rapping.

I love Golden! 💜😍💜 Of course, I subscribe to the late Prince's belief that an artist's creativity must be respected, whether we the audience finds it appealing or not. Also, Suga during the Suchwita interview with JK, helped me to further appreciate how strong JK is as an artist (ie the speed with which he recorded the album). Congrats to JK! He did so well 😊

I think its a good first attempt at refining his range technically and stylistically. I love several songs, and they made it to my playlist (seven, standing next to you, hate you, shot glass of tears), and others are occassional replays. I truly believe he is special and look forward to what happens next. As a side note, I think him singing in English as well as he did is such a fucking feat, even though I cant imagine loving it less even if it was a Korean/English hybrid or even just in Korean.

Hi hannasizemore. Love your comments. You’re spot on about how fast JK has created an interesting mix of pop songs with demanding range, musicality and tough choreo within such short notice & in a language that he’s not well versed in!😮It speaks volumes of his work ethics and growth as an artiste. He’s certainly going to be a force to reckon with.💜

7 out of 7 - this series has been near perfectly done! Great job!!💜💜 I love your analysis of Golden and JK's performance of the songs. My favorite songs are Shot Glass of Tears, Somebody, and SNTY. I agree with you that to compare him to any other artist(s) is disrespectful to him. Yes, we can acknowledge that he has a similar feel/vibe as another artist but to say that he is like ... it always gave me a slight "ick". Anyway, the album is very good and I have added some to certain of my playlists. I absolutely love the first line of SNTY, "Play me slow" ... he immediately had my attention! But, to each their own. Be well everyone - what's next Ms. Fairlane!

I think that Westerners forget the outsized influence that Michael Jackson had on music around the world. I see Jungkook's dancing and singing in some of the songs as an homage to that influence, a "thank you, MJ, for paving the way". He is certainly not the first artist to reference the Jackson style of singing and dancing, but I think he has certainly done it justice. Congratulations, Jungkook! 💜💜💜💜

You made me cry, i love your analysis of the song so much - I am so proud of JK- especially since this was made as you said in haste. I do have to say that because I grew up with MJ that I love that there are tastes of his type of vocals etc in Standing Next To You - it made me excited to have that back again. I don’t think it’s disrespectful to either JK or MJ. No one was as big as MJ in his day and I wish that for JK if that is what he wishes - Global Pop Star! Let’s go!!

Thank you for your analysis as always. I love how you broke down each song. I loved this album as his choices fits his personality. Sometimes I think he is the energizer bunny jumping here & there. He seems to want to try everything before the timer goes off. Whether that’s military service, he gets older, etc….. Whatever that means to him. So the variety of sounds while telling a story just reminds me of his personality. One day he may narrow his style but I’m enjoying this phase. Jk is an awesome singer and dancer. He is also funny but can be serious when necessary. I’d love to see him in a k-drama. That may not interest him. For me, I will following JK and the rest of BTS . They have definitely changed music globally. Looking forward to 2025. Thanks. 16:47

I'd love to see a completely written by him album, I like Golden but he wrote nothing on it. I want some personal passion out of JK (and Tae who didn't write anything on Layover). The main reason I became an ARMY 5 years ago was the passion the group put into writing their songs, it was something very special knowing each member had a hand in certain songs true most of their songs were written co/written by Namjoon, Yoongi, and Hobi but the other members also had a hand in quite a few songs and even some singles. JK's your Eyes Tell is my all time favorite song because it was written (co written) by him he had a hand in it and it shows, Stay Alive is another good example, Yoongi's writing and JK's singing blew that song out of the park!! I have no issue with the guys just singing others songs but them actually writing them means so much more. They pour their soul into songs they actually write. 💜

@charlottesmom they already wrote so many songs , and they will give us many more self writing songs in the future, so I am happily looking forward to anything they will bless us with. JK said that he didn't want to write anything this time , he actually just wanted to take rest before the military. He has always loved to cover songs, ( every time easily making them so much more beautiful, making them "his own" 😌) trying different styles and challenging himself . I feel that's what he did with GOLDEN. Having fun, challenging himself to sing all English and doing different styles. I'm happy for him and he sounds awsome, as always!! 🔥😎😊 My favorite JK ( written and co written) songs are Magic Shop, Your eyes Tell, Still With You ✨️, my you, Begin, My Time, Euphoria. Stay Alive with Yoongi , stole my heart and didn't give it back 🥹💜

I appreciate your thorough analyses of JK’s talents. He’s spent 10 years as BTS’ “front” man, and has improved so much both in his rich voice and his dancing which he does with such ease and creativity (kudos to the choreographers, a shout-out to Brian Puspos). Let’s be honest-no western pop singer has that combination of singing/dancing talent, plus producing the best MV’s. Korea has come so far and moved ahead of western pop and rock over the past few years, globally opening their music up to the world. I agree, comparisons to legends like Michael Jackson, Beatles, etc., are useless. Influenced, yes, but JK at age 26 is creating his own genre. K-Pop, led by JK (and Jimin too whose groundbreaking album is as good as any western album out there), and BTS’ incredible discography of beautiful pop/rock/hip hop/R&B has done what music should do-moved millions to enjoy hearing their music over and over again. On a somewhat negative note, I feel the western singers collaborating with JK in this album are riding the coattails of his talent and popularity, but that may be expected because of BigHit’s merger with the U.S. JK’s voice does indeed carry every song-you got it right❣️

I've had Covid and missed your analysis until today. I so enjoy your point of view on things. I didn't listen to the entire album at first...I just heard the preview and liked some of it. Now that I've listened to the entire album, I really love the album. Obviously I have favorites but I really enjoyed the entire album. I've read that Jungkook is taking some heat from Korean reviewers for "removing" the K from Kpop. I like some kpop and I dislike some kpop, just like I like and dislike some western pop music. I might not be the best judge, but I think that Jungkook has never hidden his love of western pop so it stands to reason that he unapologetically embraced this opportunity to create a western pop album. I believe, as you called out, that he is working on english but may not be able to write songs in english yet. He did however, enter this activity with intelligence and passion and picked tracks that created a lovely narrative that took us through all the many levels of love. I have no problem with people comparing Jungkook to MJ. The problem I have is with the people that say he "stole" dance moves from MJ. As you stated, MJ completely changed the game. He was a revolution unto himself. Artists (Usher, Neyo, Chris Brown...just to name a few biggies) have been "dancing like MJ" for years. It is generally a compliment. I'm bothered that people are SUDDENLY bothered that JK can do it too. I hate the selective outrage. No one has ever complained about the three I named above. They are lauded for their ability to dance like MJ. Jungkook has been dancing like this for years with BTS and I never heard anyone complain until he went solo. I'm sure some of the outrage comes from people who know nothing about BTS...but it still makes me mad! I agree with just about everything you shared in your review...except for SNTY sounding like Broadway. I disagree completely. I'm sure you don't mind me disagreeing. That song is throwback to a different era of pop. I feel like that song is an homage to the music that sat in that space between pure pop and R&B-ish music. It's the music that crossed over and was accepted by a pop audience and opened the door for many artists to appeal to a wider range of folks. Earth, Wind and Fire, Commodores, Jacksons, MJ, Switch, KC and the Sunshine Band and all of those groups who had horn sections. In case you can't tell...that's my favorite track on the album and I've listened to it a billion times on repeat. Alexa doesn't even ask me what I want to hear...she just plays it! I'm so happy for JK and this new album. I know this won't be the last we hear from him as a soloist. Thanks for letting me get on and off my soapbox!

Sam Scott-Thorne a vocal coach from Glasgow did a reaction to Golden. He has done reactions to several BTS songs. He explains what body parts Jungkook and the other members use to come out with amazing sound. He explains what we think JK is singing falsetto is actually he’s using his head voice to chest voice. In doing so, Jk hits 5 octaves from head to chest voice. He shows when JK sings falsetto.

Your insights are always appreciated. However, I think the references to Michael Jackson in Standing Next To You are quite intentional. What confirmed this to me was his choice of white socks with black shoes in the choreo version MV. There so many others but that to me is the clencher. But of course he makes it his own.

I Agree, Latto, JH & Central Cee are all not needed and don’t Fit the songs and kill the vibe when they all come in, I know I am music snob as I have been blessed by BTS Rap Line & Vocal Line lyricism, Musicality & writing masterpieces songs in Korean & Japanese but this album was mediocre and sounded like every other artist that is played on the radio in my country (which I don’t listen to because it is all crap). I stopped listening to Generic American/English Pop Music when I became and ARMY in early 2015 so would of like original songs written by JK, also I laughed about the remark of JK being 26 yro and still a teenager, in my country you are an adult at 18yro & on your own and by 26yro hopefully you have fully matured, got a solid secure job or education, married, children, bought a house and been adulting for 8 years already so I am curious where in America are 26 year olds still treated as teens?

I like your analysis and agree. The unique thing about JK is that that he is always striving to try new styles, genres, and present a quality piece of work. His English is very good,. It is clear and he sings, especially "Standing Close to You", with a great deal of passion. He has said in several his English is not good but I disagree. Granted speaking and singing can be two different things. When he speaks Korean it is a softer sound, English can be louder and a somewhat harsher sound. There are so many words needed to convey what you want to say, and that is one of the things I struggle with Korean is that there are words that are dropped and thinking in English instead of Korean is what I need to do. JK has done an amazing job on this album and I could not be prouder.

I've only listened to Golden once so far, admittedly skipping Seven & 3D bc I already knew I didn't care for them, (I can't get past the F boy sound of Jack Harlow. He might be the nicest person ever, but he presents himself as a F boy & I hate it). Standing Next to You is the only one that really stood out to me, and not in a good way. It was so blatently done to sound like Michael Jackson's style, (you can hear the influence of his Off the Wall & Thriller albums specifically) that I was actually concerned that someone is trying to position JK as the next MJ which isn't fair to either of them. There can never be another Michael, just as there will never be another BTS. Your analysis (and Yoongi's glowing pride) does make me want to take another listen and actually focus on the music. Great analysis. I share the same opinion about that certain rap section in one song, well, I don't particularly love the rap section in his first release either, but at least that one fits with the theme in the Explicit version anyway. I love that all the songs are themed but a different than each other. The whole album is in my playlist now, but my favorites are Standing Next To You, and Hate You. Well, there are several others that are growing on me a lot as well. As for the reference to Michael Jackson, Big Hit actually said that there are subtle references to MJ (although I think they are a little more than "subtle." Some of the dance moves definitely came from MJ influence. I don't have a problem with saying those things, but Jung Kook is Jung Kook, not MJ, and I mean that in a positive light. He brings his own style to everything he does and I'm there for it.

I am enjoying Golden and listening to it a lot. I agree with much of what you say and am happy that the producers let his voice stand out as much as they did. I agree that Jack Harlow detracted from 3D but I am not sure his addition was strictly a producers choice. I think JK wants to work with artists he likes but maybe it doesn't always work. I think comparisons to Michael Jackson are apt but I would take it a step further back and consider this an homage to Motown. Yes, I am old enough to remember those days and I think the "grandeur" that people are talking about in the song actually goes back to those classic productions. Considering the roots of K-pop this makes sense to me. After all Michael Jackson was a Motown artist.

Thank you for your review I reallly enjoyed hearing diffrent thoughts about our maknae's first album I just wanted to add to your comment about the main track SNTY JK said that it wasn't the main track when he recorded it but after reviewing all the tracks he finally made his mind about it just because he wanted to showcase it as a performence more than a song for his biggest audience which is "Army" he said that he took that risk just because he knows that Army love stage performences with sofisticated choreo and this is how it ended as the title song, also he said that his choosed all the tracks mainly because they firstly matched his taste in music and secondly because he always wanted to try diffrent genres and see where he can go with his voice abilities 💜

As a professional musician, there is something that you barely touched on but still missed is how he interprets a song, no matter what song it is. And you also missed how Jung Kook said he didn’t plan on making a full album just a single which was Seven. Later he was talked into making an album and he said he didn’t have anything to really say in his music. I know exactly what he is saying because to write a song from the beginning is very difficult and a long process for some but easy to others. So he decided like he said to hire the best songwriters and producers and he put his best spin and interpretation on each piece. I think people who wanted him to write the whole album could have been done, but he needed to complete this project in a hurry. These are things that if you have never composed and produced music have no clue on and like Jung Kook has said, that is a big reason he respects RM, J-Hope, and Suga for that ability. And I really am not trying to criticizing anyone for their views but giving them more information on what goes on from the musicians standpoint. I lived what he went through went through learning his craft though not as difficult and intense as I never had to learn any choreography. And I apologize for the long comment and appreciate your views.

Jungkook is a master singer/performer like no orher. He definitely is worthy of being called golden. He is the new King of Pop!

I agree with everything you have said and all the comments before mine are certainly relevant. I strongly feel that the rap of Jack Harlow should have been totally changed out. I don't have a problem with his voice, I think his tone suits the song very well, but oh those lyrics are just so jarring to me. As an aside, listening to Too Much, the rap lyrics sung by Central C are crudish but also cute at the same time and much better to listen to. Anyhow JK is going to slay the world and I look forward to more of it.

Sam Scott-Thorne has done reactions to several BTS songs and JK’s Golden album. He explains what body parts they are using to produce amazing sound. He shows when JK is singing falsetto or singing from his head voice to his chest voice hitting 5 octaves going down. He says his voice is very clear, that his vocal folds are well developed. That he makes singing appear easy but if someone tries it, they find not easy to do.

I really enjoyed your insightful analysis of JK’s Golden. I listen to the non explicit of the 3D version because I find the rap words misogynistic. The rap detracts from the sense that JK wants to go to the next physical stage of the relationship but he also respects her … “ and if you let me” I like the way you guided us through the stages of the romance with all its awe and desperation. It’s helped me to enjoy Golden even more. The grief in “hate You “ The certainty in “ Standing Next To you “ Jk is able to express all these emotions masterfully. The only part where we might part ways , is I do think there is a connection with the young Michael Jackson. A sort of tribute ? The clothes ( even down to the white sock s) are similar. Might I cheekily suggest that JK IS standing next to MJ!!! Thank you for your amazing insights !! X

Admittedly JK's music is not my style, AT ALL. I find it difficult to relate to it; the very direct love pop songs. But anyone would have to be willfully ignorant to say he is not talented. I think a lot of the "criticism" stems from people trying to compare BTS releases. Just because they are from the same group and are vocalists does not make them the same kind of artists. All four vocalists' approaches to music and their preference of genre is very different. Their approach to music is very different. It is like comparing Justin Beiber to Lana Del Ray or the Weekend (just example to make my point, not comparing our guys to any of these artists); they may all dip into Pop but the sound is so distinct. I think people will enjoy solo releases more if they view each project on its own but the obsession with numbers, charting, sales, views, ranking the vocalists has kind of ruined that process of a bit. I won't trivialize the efforts of ARMY to get BTS to where they are but first and foremost BTS is music. Take a break from the charts and enjoy the music, just the music. I think it will easy to see the talents and efforts of all the guys then. The chorus of Yes or No is stuck in my head 😅

Overall I agree with you on most of your points, especially the point about Jack Harlowe (he was very misplaced on this album -- I totally agree). However, I don't think comparing JK to MJ (or to BTS) is a bad thing. BTS members have often voiced tremendous respect for MJ and I think there are several songs where BTS and JK have paid homage to him in a super respectful way. It is very evident the influence the MJ had on pop music in general, and on BTS and JK in specific. I don't think that's a bad thing at all. And obviously BTS has an influence on JK -- they are his brothers. He has spoken very openly about how they have all had a hand in influencing him both musically and personally. Not sure he could run away from being compared to BTS if he tried but I'm sure he has no desire to do so -- he's made the super clear over and over again. Again -- don't think the comparisons are a bad thing, they are just stating the obvious really.

Love your analysis and I agree with you about comparing Jungkook with the other artists. Although he is very much influenced by his hyungs (he did grow up with them) and other artists, he has his own colour and his own voice. As he said, there’s room to be better. And Andrew Watt summed it up when he said that he is not doing this for other people but for himself because he knows he can do better. He is an amazing, passionate artist and I am very sure that he has more to offer. All of BTS have more to offer. That’s what sets them apart! 💜

So many thanks for your thoughtful and insightful review. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I agree with you regarding comparing JK to other artists although I accept that people will always make the comparison. I am looking at it so that it might gain streams and in some instances more followers for BTS/Jungkook. Indivually the members are breaking down more barriers that BTS started as a group and SK culture is apparent in so many commercial businesses in the UK. Even those areas not big city! You can even have Korean cooking lessons in a nearby college, this only started 2 years ago . I love the fact that BTS has never stuck with just one genre and I think that is part of their overall strength. Such great ability to change up as and when. Never boring, always talented - no matter what you are watching. SK should be so proud of these young men. Thank you again from UK.

I personally have no problem with Jack Harlow even tho I’m a Chinese chef 60 y/o mom. I grew up with 4 trouble making brothers who speak with no filters. Reactions of the most young ppl n even older folks r laughters at the outrageousness of the lyrics. It’s a light-hearted song n I think Jack enjoyed shocking JK n the audience. I like the fact that he genuinely likes Jk n gave or not lent JK the Kentucky huge diamond n gold necklace. Kid Laroi also likes Jk. I think JK was smart to go this route. It was a surprise gift engineered by Andrew Watt. I’m thrilled for JK. Btw, my church friends will b shocked that I’m into Bts.😝❗️I know about TaeKook but under the circumstances how can u b angry when they grew up together? There’s something pure n innocent about them.

My first encounter with BTS was Dreamers at the World Cup. The second thing I found was the documentary where I saw that he arrived in Qatar to find a production that was not at his standards and he stepped in and fixed the production. I could see that he was an artist who knew how to stage a performance. As part of the BTS rabbit hole I am in for the past year, I have observed JungKook, and as a singer I pay attention to things related to his and all members’ voices. It seemed to me even at the Busan concert that JungKook was having some vocal challenges and they seemed to persist over the summer. So I was blown away by the quality of his singing on Golden. I don’t hear any problems and he seems to be in stronger voice than even during BTS. Some of that is natural as he is getting close to the age of vocal maturity for a male singer, but the control he had to give each song its own vocal character was outstanding. Second, I will be honest, the album was a pleasant surprise. Like you I did not like the feature on 3D and didn’t like Latto on Seven. I felt just like so many young western singers, that JungKook sold out to the unclassy and vulgar aspects of western music. These songs were in direct contrast with the message of respect that is a hallmark of BTS. Had RM been brought in to give his input and edits and JungKook do the rap himself as you said - RM could have written it for him if needed - it would have elevated both songs. JungKook didn’t need to do have features with his talent. I think with limited knowledge of English the writers/producers included double meanings and use of the F word in a manner different than just being sexy as JungKook seemed indicate was his intent in interviews. Like you said about your feeling on Harlow, this is just my opinion and with Seven reaching the milestones it has reached, I am probably in the minority. All the above is really just to say that when I listened to the rest of Golden and saw how it focused on JungKook singing and really good production of the songs, I was very happy and relieved. I have been listening to the rest of the album whenever I can. As always, your analysis was interesting and informative. As for my favorite songs I think Standing Next to You is fantastic. It showcases him to the world as a performer and singer so much better than Seven or 3D. I am not as concerned as you with the Michael Jackson comparisons. I think JungKook is intentionally paying homage to MJ. In the choreography video he has the black pants and shoes with white socks that were Michael Jackson’s style. It shows off the footwork in the choreography so it makes sense to do. As with Dynamite choreography there are moves and references to MJ throughout the performance. His dancers are amazing. There are also fun “Easter Egg” references to BTS or previous solos like Left and Right, Black Swan, DNA, etc. I love that I can listen to the song or watch the performances and just enjoy them in awe of his talent. Other songs I like are Too Sad to Dance because I can sing along in harmony with him, which is something I always do when listening to music. He did the same harmonizing at the Weverse listening live that he did, so that was fun. I also like the last verse which says just go out and dance anyway even if you are alone. Sounds like a metaphor for this solo stage of BTS and what he finally decided to do. Next favorite is probably Yes or No. It has single possibilities I think and is another strong vocal performance. I also like Hate You and the differences in how he sang that to evoke the feelings of the song. The rest of the new songs I am also enjoying with their own styles. Thanks again for sharing your insights. I always learn things.

I agree with you. I don’t like the comparisons to MJ that I see often. I also agree this album was made in haste and is only the beginning for him. I eagerly await an album solely written and even produced by him or him and Suga. He is the genius who wrote Still With You, Magic Shop, My Time, Begin, Stay, and contributed to many others. I’m looking forward to hearing his own creations-that will be when he truly has an impact and all comparisons will cease as he is a unique talent. I’m so very proud of him and will be rooting for him. My favorites from this album were Closer to You and Hate You. Standing Next To You is a showcase tune for performances and is very well done. Jack Harlow’s rap has been under a lot of fire and understandably so. One girl, too boring, as spoken by a boor. I’m never impressed when rappers say they like several women at once. This is not romantic love but something else that most people would never do. Then he says he shows his girls to the boys and has her on camera playing with herself. All these things are so uncool and he sounds pervy to say the least and borderline criminal if nonconsensual . I’m also not that impressed with Latto’s lyrics-so graphic. The clean version of Seven without her rap would have been the same catchy song and made it a sweeter love song. However, I think Junkook went with these raps for the shock factor as that is trendy and garners attention. He is also out there to demonstrate he is a grown man and not a baby. It’s working, so mission accomplished on many levels. This album is exceptional and his potential shines. When he returns from the military is when we will see his full potential realized and i eagerly await him. Meanwhile, we have this treasure of an album and time to appreciate all their discography from 10 years, which huge volume never ceases to amaze me. I love these guys and their music and dance and they themselves. A wonderful phenomenon to be enjoyed and I am truly grateful they share their talents and passion with the world. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I personally think that Standing Next to You is the gold in Golden and it is my absolute favorite on the album. I think it may have been a purposeful choice to write the music as they did. Perhaps to avoid what was expected. I do love pop, but sometimes the “formula” can get a little boring. I loved the vocals, the high notes, the runs, but I’m not a musician or singer. I just know what I like when I hear it. (Like the live vocals from iHeart Radio…so good!) So I don’t have a music background but I was professionally trained in multiple dance forms for over ten years. It may have been a lifetime ago, but I still know amazing dancing when I see it. This choreography is extremely difficult and Jungkook and his dancers were just exceptional! I don’t get easily blown away by choreography and dance performance these days, yet here I am looking like a leaf blower hit me lol. So many dancers think as long as they do the dance steps correctly then it’s ok, but it’s not. You have to “feel” the dance (some call it the dancer’s musicality.) Jungkook felt that dance from the top of his head to the tips of his toes. Like most dancers, JK knows how much MJ gave to the fields of music and dance. I feel it’s a great tribute while still screaming JK. This dance performance was epic in both MVs. I realize there are many people who could care less about the dance and to them I say, thank you for kindly allowing me to geek out about the dancing for a moment. I also really enjoy Somebody, Closer to You, and Yes or No, then Hate, Shot Glass of Tears, Please Don’t Change, and Too Sad to Dance. I do know from interviews that Standing Next to You is very special to him. So I’ll be standing next to him and continue streaming. Plus I would love to send him a message that he can get similar numbers on his solo MVs and songs as he got with the collabs.

To be honest, after 3D I didn't expect much from "Golden" as I'm usually someone that likes the B-sides more than the title-tracks. Actually I expected nothing anymore. I guess, I was wrong? The retro-funk "Standing Next To You" is exactly what I imagined a mature Jungkook would sound like. I simply love it !! Apart from all the nods to MJ this song is a perfect dance song. The instrumentation (Man, the bass!!!...the drums....the guitar....everything), the vocals are amazing, the adlips. And in the MV there's this man with charisma oozing confidence out of every pore. THAT's what I call sexy! And that song with a live band has made this ole girl very very happy! It shows that Jungkook doesn't need any hip featured artist. Seven and 3D were for the younger demographic. SNTY is for everybody. And I truly believe that this one will pave his way as a global superstar. Apart from the title track I also love "Yes Or No", "Hate You" and "Shot glass of tears". "To Sad To Dance" has also a certain quality. "Closer To You" and "Please Don't Change" sound somehow similar despite the different lyrical topic. I can't pinpoint it, but they're both not really my taste, but quite ok. "Sombody" sounds strange and is the one I don't like at all. But at least I don't hate it like 3D ;P. Anyway...overall I thoroughly enjoy 6 of the 10 songs (I count Seven just once) , then there's two I won't skip and two that I would skip. That's really good for an album. So I decided to buy it.

I agree it is too soon to liken Jungkook to BTS, MJ (the Beatles or Taylor Swift for that matter). I think it’s known he did not write the lyrics or produce the sound for the songs on this album. He wanted to showcase his vocal ability and did that. He’s only starting his solo career and he will inevitably grow as an artist with a particular vision and point of view.

Talking about versatility and vocals and not even once mentioning "Somebody"???????? The song where he intentionally changed his voice and surprised everybody with the dark and unique sound????????? The song with the the heaviest underlying dark atmosphere? I guess we went to different music schools. As for commenters disliking toward Jack, Good God, grow up a bit and listen to the alternate version and stop whining. For real now. Bottom line, Golden is among the few albums where I will never skip a song and I am a heavy music listener (from all over the world). It is an all-rounded album, produced and delivered with an excellence that is unprecedented in the last 20-30 years. I know, scary - for all types of audiences. And yes MJ and Jungkook are different. But as somebody who saw them both live, in a stadium concert, they are at par when it comes to performance, charisma, dance, stage domination and live vocals. Only James Brown may have been at the same level. So yeah...

As always, great review. I may get alot of hate here but i don't like the songs seven or 3d. Maybe I'm old school. Fking is not loving to me. Its a power trip and comes across as controlling. Side note the MV, to me, was borderline stalking. No point fighting, she finally agrees with fking him. I was turned off by 3d for many reasons. I don't know Jack's music. People put his lyrics down and I totally agree But everyone that worked w the song liked it. Jk included so everyone involved should get the, whats the right word... hate not just Jack Harlow. All that said, when I gave the "clean" version of seven a try, it was better. I'll leave it at that. I listened to the album because i really like JK and appreciate his talent and artistry. So glad I did. The other songs on the album were amazing. Shot glass of tears and dont change are favorites. He impressed me more by singing in all English. Short on time and not his native language. That takes dedication to his art even higher. This is only a taste of his abilities. So happy to watch history in the making.

The comparisons with MJ are huge, however I agree that he is not an "heir" or the "new MJ", he's just himself Jung Kook. His music and his dance have a lot of homage to MJ and even some BTS, but it is just that, homage to his inspirations. JK is just finding himself as an artist and this is his first solo output. He has an amazing instrument, and he knows this without the bane of conceit. He'll soon gain enough confidence to write his own songs instead of relying on the A&R of Hybe America (and Scooter) to find generic pop songs to sing. Not that his album is generic, he's put a lot his artistry in it - I'm just patiently awaiting more of it!

I REALLY REALLY agree with you about Jack Harlow’s rap. I love the whole album, except, whenever possible, I skip Harlow’s verse & downloaded the alternate version. You are right, Harlow’s words are 1) immature but also offensive (dead body, ABG’s etc). I dislike his rap because it is misogynistic. Jung Kook’s lyrics are sweet and loving. I was glad to hear your review & be able to comment here (vent) because I start fuming every time I hear Harlow’s rap, after enjoying the rest of the song. I thought that in terms of defining himself as a pop star with music he likes to listen to and perform, the album fit Kookie great. I like pop music just fine, but unfortunately most of the album was not to my individual taste. Seven was not my thing at all, and 3D was only slightly better (would've been far better without Jack Harlow). Standing Next To You was great because it was the least that sounded like the other two. And Yes or No and Somebody were great too. The rest of the songs I had issues with, mostly in terms of the songwriters and producers. Kookie sang/performed the hell out of each and every song, but I do feel that the songwriters did not do anything to help him. When rapline and in-house Big Hit producers write songs for BTS they know their members strengths and weaknesses, and know where is good to push the envelope and where is better to play to strengths. The American writers/producers were so clearly not familiar with Kookie's strengths and weaknesses (which is understandable given they likely just met for the first time this year). I thought Kookie did a great job singing in English because these songs felt like they were purposefully trying to make him trip up. The lyrics and beat in a few of the songs moved faster than Jungkook could keep up most of the time (especially Seven). This wouldn't be a problem in his native tongue, but in English? For his first ever attempt at American pop? Don't you think they could slow it down just a bit so man doesn't feel so rushed? In spite of that, he did a fabulous job and I'm seriously impressed. A lot of the lyrics were also extremely surface level and left me thinking "show don't tell" in almost every song, especially Too Sad to Dance, Hate You and Shot Glass of Tears. The Major Lazor and DJ Snake songs were also far lackluster than what I was expecting from those DJ's past catalogs. In all, this album felt like Kookie because it was obvious all the songs were his taste, he enjoyed performing them, and he's just an inherently show-stopping performer, but it also lacked that je ne sais quoi that in my opinion the rest of the members solo albums had in spades.

You lost me with the analysis for Standing Next To You. The animated silhouette looked nothing like MJ, weird. The song is in the Funk/Disco genre. Very familiar to us who lived through that era, liked the club scene and listen to R&B music. Though Pop has become Caucasian friendly, that wasn't its origins. The pop sound is a blend of Jazz, Blues, Rock & Roll, Big Band, gospel and many black music sub-genre. Elvis and the Beatles made it acceptable, and marketable, to mainstream white audiences and entertainment companies. In some ways Golden shows the progression of Pop itself, going from the music perfected in black communities, to music curated by white artist for white audiences. JK is the rare artist who can pull off such diversity, but it may have more to do with his instinct for style & nuance than culture. He's studied Western music, took what works for him, and adapted it to his vocal colors. All of the music greats (GOATS) have this same ability. Unfortunately, most K-pop fans, including Army, have little concern with music from black artist. To clarify, black artist are ones born in America and influenced by the experiences they endure there. JK seems different because he is. He's that rare person with God given talent, who's constantly improving.

🤔 but I think standing next to you is how pop is sounding this days, still I really liked the song, more than the two previous. Side note, I can only see Jimin dancing when I listen to too sad to dance 😂

I agree with your insight completely!! 3D track was a disappointment, JK got lost. He was too disconnected from Harlow, it was like Harlow was trying to be the main focus a bad one at that. JK really doesn't need a boost from a Western artist as much as the producers think he does. He can stand alone just fine......thank you!

I would also add Latto's performance to the list of unliked elements. It wasn't clear to me whose voice she's supposed to be representing. Is she supposed to be channeling the "dead" Jungkook? or possibly speaking for the girlfriend? Speaking as a past girlfriend of JK's? If it's the latter and she's straddling the coffin bragging about, well, let's say oral sex, then it's no wonder the present girlfriend is pissed. But if there's no reason for her voice to be heard in this context, then why the hell is she part of that scene? JK hired her to make a spectacle of his fake funeral? Does that mean he also thinks she's vulgar and gross? So why inflict her on us? Sorry for the rant, but I really hated the parts from both of the US rappers. I don't mind Jungkook singing sexy stuff (I'm learning all sorts of slang too; thank heavens for the Urban Dictionary), but Jack's first verse was exploitative. Where I'm inconsistent and conflicted is that I'm totally enjoying watching Jungkook strip off more clothing with every video. At the rate he’s going we’ll be seeing the full monty before he enlists for military service. You go, boy-- strip me of my principles.

this is a very good point. Latto didn't represent a voice in the narrative. you are correct.
