I always keep a 1 oz US gold eagle coin on me in case of emergency. Recently while holidaying from Australia to the US, my bank (well known internationally) accidentally cancelled my credit cards/debit cards due to a false security threat on a Friday afternoon. New cards were required and couldn't be issued until Monday. In the meanwhile I went to a gold merchant in Vegas who paid me the standard daily purchase rate of gold which was US$2150 for my 1 oz coin. I now had cash until the new cards were ready on Monday afternoon. So don't tell me gold isn't money - it's been just that for thousands of years.

Strange and not to be argumentative. Lived in Singapore 12.5 years, Nigeria, Chad, Gabon, Libya, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi, UAE, France, and Malaysia and significant work and travel in Indonesia, China (well more than 30 visits), Australia, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, both Congos, Cameroon, Angola, Mexico, Guatemala, Argentina. The lowest US dollar denomination typically accepted by money changers, distributed by banks and ATMs, or passed on the daily (black) market is the $20. 1, 5, and 10 are seldomly accepted (maybe in Canada). That’s my experience working, living, and traveling outside the US for more than 28.5 years since 1981. Oh, and btw, my Thai (and now US) wife and I plan our final retirement in Thailand. Sawadee!

The standing instruction is keep a 100 dollar USD bill and use it in Emergency to get transportation to the International Airport if there is any uprising or something .Don't stop for nothing.

All US bills are good here, though some may limit $50s and $100s at stores (Fine at banks, our ATMs will also give Canadian US$ is they want). Your change will be treated as Canadian change but dollars with get the current rate. Never been overseas, but I could see flashing $1 or $5 to a local may get you some directions or food is US$ is valued there. North Koreans love US$, helps with the life after the escape. ;)

I'm a mountain hiker. This is absolutely true. Also, its not JUST about being a water barrier. Any water barrier should also be windproof. Wind-chill is a killer, especially if you're wet. But I can hike in comfort in a t-shirt with a good softshell on without issue in quite cold, wet, windy conditions.

I have spent significant time in Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos for work (military contractor and high tech) as well as for personal (lived in and both ex wives are from countries in the area)…and they most definitely did not hate Americans. Locals wanted to take pictures with me just because I was visiting their home or business. Kids in every country would follow me around to speak English. I ate free in many restaurants. One of the roadside cafes in Vietnam named a version of their Pho “The American” because I liked it a certain way. In the Philippines I was constantly being asked to join groups when out at bars and clubs, and was never asked to pay. And there were so many other good will gestures. It was actually a very odd feeling sometimes.

What you should carry is 20s while traveling in less developed countries, always at least 100 bucks in a ziplock bag as in many parts of the world folks will not accept folded or damaged US currency. Should be enough for at least 1 night in a cheap hotel, or a hostel bed, enough food for a day, and some transport to get there in most places. Even in Europe.

Even a pocket, emergency poncho, nearly disposable, can be a life saver. I highly recommend an umbrella, also. In addition to the mobile shelter it provides, duct taping a bundle of cheap “C wrenches” to the shaft, and you have a just improvised a concealed, deadly weapon. You can get out of a lot of bad situations with a great pair of footwear, something to keep precipitation off you, and money. You should also carry a lighter. A mini Bic is perfect, although the lighter (I carry 4 or 5 different fire making ways) I carry is a refillable, “peanut style” , called FireStash (by True Utility), on a keychain. My EDC philosophy is that if I am unlikely to carry it every day (if it’s too large, for example), I need to get something that fulfills its function that I WILL carry, or do without it. I don’t even carry a real knife, just a couple of Utilikeys.

maybe this info doesn't apply to me so much because I don't travel out of the US, but I did just buy waterproof pants because I realized I don't have a pair. I always keep extra coats and layers in my car, just in case of a break down because I travel the Midwest for work. No matter the time of year, I have warm layers and a waterproof/win resistant layer and hats and gloves and a full face covering. Never know if I'll get stranded late at night or have to wait a few hours in cold or rain.

Think what the reaction of a US citizen in Florida or North Dakota or Mississippi would be to someone trying to buy help with Euro notes. Gold carries its value thru all currencies. Or think of it this way. If the US economy collapses, $100 may only be worth 1 euro. While 1oz of gold may be worth 300 euros. Gold's value (intrinsic though it is) is in its rarity. While the $ is backed (in part) by the US economy.

Problem you have with assets like gold and silver and things really go south they will only help for a short period of time. The government in times of REAL disaster will recall all gold bullion/coins and you will have to surrender them back to them. You may well get a payment for them but the likelihood is that currency will be worthless. This happened during WW2 in the UK.

Small bills aren’t usually accepted at the exchange points around the world. $100, $50, $20, maybe, $10, but no one needs your $1 bills. Also, no one gives a damn if it’s USD or EUR, or any other currency that is exchangeable.
