Before even watching the video, my answer to the title - It's not. Because it's friendly. If you want to put bases there for defense....they're already there. If you want more, just ask. If you want resources, just pay to help develop them. It's a friendly country. There's no real advantage gained by wrecking decades of friendship by invading to get stuff you can just barter for.

exactly. Europeans arent exactly shy about stripping resources from their colonies so it should tell you something about how inaccessible those resources are, plus as you mentioned if all that ice melts we're going to have bigger problems then who gets to strip those resources from the island. Besides that by the time most of that ice melts we'll likely/hopefully have viable space mining which will make those resources less important, and we'll have more and more resources we can access in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Thinking that Danish politicians could now suddenly sell the entire island, sell rights of resource extraction, etc without the say of the people of Greenland in this day and age seems woefully ignorant of the relationship between Greenland and Denmark. Greenland has an unimaginable amount of hydro potential. They already have enough hydro electricity production that aluminum ore is shipped there for refining and production. Aluminum production is extremely electric intensive. Plus, China is already making inroads into Greenland, whether China or the US moves in on Greenland, it's going to happen, one way or another. I'd rather see the US with their environmental regulations be the one to develop Greenland's resources because, despite their best efforts, the Greenlanders won't be able to keep China from creating an environmental disaster if they are let in more.

Instead of alianating north european alies and driving us closer to potential US advesaries, wouldnt it be in US best intrest to secure europe and by proxy greenland to the fold? i mean if Trump-US sees china as its main foe it should be in its interest to keep europe close as a outpost against russia. or is it the Nationalistic-isolationistic part that trumphs it?

I think it's the last part. Trump has been pretty forward about his isolationist stance with exceptions like israel or germany. His entire policy basis is the preparation of major war efforts that would most likely be executed under the next Democrat goverment. It is also born out of a desperate attempt to revive American imperialism back to its former glory. With israel for example taking a major piss with the Iran-backed resistance groups despite the US spending so much time and money on militarily supporting them. Idk my two cents on it

If I were Denmark, maybe accept a lease deal with the US for multiple billions. A bit like UK did with the US for BIOT - though that obviously had serious ethical questions with moving the islanders from their territory😏😏. All interesting and I agree: we need to pay attention to this. Quite frankly, Denmark is not in a position to defend it - I think they have a couple of special forces dog sleigh teams there. Hate to break it to you, but only the foolish Greenlanders think complete sovereignty is achievable. Greenland is a welfare state wholly sponsored by Denmark. They pride themselves on "their" "free" healthcare and education. However, the reality is that these social programs benefitting all Greenlanders are paid nearly entirely by the taxpayers of Denmark. Independence and true sovereignty would end that funding immediately. The only choices Greenlanders realistically have are to (1) remain a territory of Denmark, (2) be taken over by the US with a negotiated agreement allowing for the same funding for their social programs, or (3) to gain independence and hope to God they can get private companies extracting their natural resources to foot the bill for said social programs. None of those scenarios equal independence.

If they want independence yet can't rely on their selves for survival, then how do you figure that happens? They have 1 of 3 choices, China, US or Denmark, They can't have both. they need someone bc they have to grow to be self-reliant. The only way they grow is to allow resource mining and oil drilling. With Denmark they don't get that bc of environmentalist, they get free college and healthcare but must travel to Denmark for it and pay 40-50% tax. With China they get raped for resources and the Chinese bring in slave labor cutting the native people out, without regard for the environment of Greenland or their people. With the US you pay no tax bc you are a territory not a state, you have some environmental regulations not close to Denmark but certainly not strip mining like the Chinese. Protection from the US military. Heavy Heavy investment from the US economy into Greenland, no energy shortages, job production, building of schools and college, hospitals and other infrastructure, deep water ports for major shipping and a pathway to real sustainability and possible future independence. This shows how limited Trump's thinking is but I'm not saying he's stupid. If Trump paid a million dollars for each citizen of Greenland, they'd probably pressure their government to go through with the deal and sell the island off. That alone would cost around 58 billion dollars, chump change in the US budget. Pay another 100 billion to Denmark and I'd say everyone won quite a bit. Strategically speaking Greenland is not that useful to Denmark but it is worth far more to the US and the US has more than enough money to actually be able to properly use the territory for what it is worth. Also, if Greenland was allowed to become their own state, then little would change for the regional government apart from being part of the US. Most of their autonomy could stay in place, it is not that implausible to accomplish this with proper dialogue. Trump however never wants to please anyone but himself, he is pigheaded like that, always wants a one-sided deal that favors him and he digs his heels in deep unless he is forced to do otherwise. Another thing is he'll never consider actually helping average people ever, he is psychopathic that way too, does not understand empathy nor just how easy it'd be too enrich enrich the people of Greenland and make his play without upsetting Denmark too much. More, this move alone would sway public opinion heavily in his favor. This is the reason this move of his isn't serious, there's also a reason why he can't see that this is actually plausible. Trump may say a lot of stupid things but that's and act, he ain't stupid, he's a manipulative psychopath, he knows precisely what he does but what he does not understand are empathy and morality, that's his weakness, that's also why so many crazy, simple-minded and poorly educated people support him, he can easily play those people, they are the easiest to manipulate. Musk is similar in this, he is also a very manipulative person. Their current relations might seem chummy but nah, they are essentially abusing one another's gifts and perks to further their own agendas. Anyone is free to think and feel about people like Trump what they like but I implore you, do not misunderstand them, *_THEY ARE COMPETENT_* so do not underestimate them, they would not hold their prominent positions if they really were stupid. Do not underestimate them, also this whole thing is likely a smokescreen so the news has something to talk about whilst he enacts a slew of actions in the background after he took office once again. His "Build that wall!" move during his first presidential campaign was also essentially the same. Controversy is always a great smokescreen.

there isn't a single military power outside of Russia or China capable of challenging the US. Europe gutted their militaries in order to spend more on public transit and free healthcare. The UK cannot protect their aircraft carriers without being embedded in a US carrier group. France might have 1 group. Poland can defend itself as can Finland and thats about it. You grew too soft to do anything. Now unfortunately you guys are seeing the cost of being weak and hopefully will wake up. aside from throwing a fit and crying what can Europe realistically do to the nation that defends them and ensures that the middle east ships you your oil? Russia would crush Europe without the US, Your merchant fleets would get torn apart by piracy without the US. You cannot project power. You cannot stop the US and you cannot survive without it. Between China Russia and the United States, it is the United States who would be the best steward of the Arctic when it comes to European interests. @@ns7495A lot of that came down to most Europe willingly accepting American hegemony. US dominance in certain sectors is fine if it keeps things secure and stable (and lets that peace dividend go Brrrr). However slacking on military spending is more and more becoming a thing of the past in Europe and if the US were to backstab Denmark now that whole upside of American induced stability is gone as well. Basically being allied or aligned towards the US would be pretty worthless in that case. And I don't see how the US would keep its bases in Europe which are essential for global logistics, intelligence and power projection. Neither do I see many european buyers of US arms in such a future. Energy is more complicated but a lot of it boils down to European choices to not damage the environment or inconvenience the local population.
