Single Cylinder Diesel Engine - Dyno Test (Diesel, BioDiesel & HydroDiesel How Much HP?)

I run The single-cylinder small diesel engine from Kohler on the Dyno with 3 different fuels to see how much power it makes in preparation for the upcoming diesel episodes as well as the see-through diesel engine series but I will be building using this engine as the blueprint engine.
Here's the oem specs for this diesel engine Tier 4 emissions: 8.5HP @ 3600rpm and 23 lb-ft of torque @ 2200rpm.
this is the diesel engine then I'm going to be using for the diesel series which I'm currently working on which includes a bunch of cool off the wall episodes as well as the see-through diesel engine itself, I'm just going to have some fun with the engine first.

GTL Diesel has a very high cetane number of around 80. European Diesel has 51 and American around 40 . It's the opposite of octane. It tells you how easy it is for the fuel to ignite under compression and how fast it ignites. So expect your engine to be very noisy as the fuel burns quicker and therefore there's more energy in that single point, which originally makes your diesel sound the way it is. Another advantages are, it has a very low cloud point, just put a real 100% synthetic engine oil into the freezer, it'll stay clear, while the typical. ,,full synthetic" Hydrocrack oils will cloud. Moreover GTL is absolutely sulfur free and it has no smell to it at all. Smells like clean water.

Thanks so much, over the top is actually what I do well, I've been really watering things down for the past couple of years to make them KZbin compatible, but recently going against my genuine style has turned out to be twice the work as if I just do it the way I normally would. I decided to do it this way for the next few episodes and see how people like it. It sounds weird but it's really a struggle for me to make things KZbin compatible if that makes any sense. I can make a movie with my eyes closed but making a KZbin video has been tricking my sense and my sould for too long now.

DexMaster881 The cost to manufacture and cost of parts are purely the result of economies of scale, thanks to US manufacturers dragging their feet on diesel in the US. The superior thermal efficiency, fuel flexibility, longevity, reduced fuel consumption and reliability of Diesel engines should mean they cost less to operate long term on anything larger than a leaf blower 😂. Silly overheating, asthmatic, fuel guzzling gassers and their precision recreational fuel are all the Union workers want to have to manufacture so that’s what we’re stuck with.
@PistonAvatarGuy
@PistonAvatarGuy 4 жыл бұрын
@@dregenius "The cost to manufacture and cost of parts are purely the result of economies of scale..." - Not even remotely true. The diesel combustion cycle requires stronger engine components, which are more expensive to produce. Diesels also require turbocharging to be practical in modern vehicles, that's an additional cost. Diesels require direct injection which is more expensive than the port injection that many gasoline engines make use of. The emissions control systems are also vastly more expensive, complex and maintenance intensive for diesels. - Longevity is purely a result of design and modern diesels begin to have so many problems with their complex fuel, induction and emissions systems as they age that their longevity is no longer superior to that of gasoline engines. - Gasoline engines are superior to diesels in every way that matters. Just a few examples: - Chevy Cruze (gasoline): 153 hp; CO2/mile 277g; annual fuel cost $1,050; EPA smog rating (out of 10) - 6. - Chevy Cruze (diesel): 137 hp; CO2/mile 294g; annual fuel cost $1,200; EPA smog rating (out of 10) - 3. - Mazda CX-5 (gasoline): 187 hp; CO2/mile 335g; annual fuel cost $1,300; EPA smog rating (out of 10) - 7. - Mazda CX-5 (diesel): 173 hp; CO2/mile 365g; annual fuel cost $1,600; EPA smog rating (out of 10) - 1. - Honda Accord Hybrid (gasoline): 212 hp; CO2/mile 184g; annual fuel cost $700; EPA smog rating (out of 10) - 7. - Prius (gasoline): 121 hp; CO2/mile 170g; annual fuel cost $650; EPA smog rating (out of 10) - 7. - Trucks... - Ford F-150 2.7 EcoBoost (gasoline): 325 hp; CO2/mile 423g; annual fuel cost $1,600; EPA smog rating (out of 10) - 5. - Compare to... - Ford F-150 3.0 Power Stroke (diesel): 250 hp; CO2/mile 463g; annual fuel cost $2,000; EPA smog rating (out of 10) - 1. - Ram 1500 3.0 EcoDiesel (diesel): 240 hp; CO2/mile 448g; annual fuel cost $2,000; EPA smog rating (out of 10) - 1.

@@WarpedPerception I think there is an easy way around the particulate question... if you set up a camera to watch the exhaust with an illuminated, bright white, background, you should be able to see a relative comparison in exhaust properties. Trying to measure fuel consumption will be more difficult because it is a recirculating fuel system, best bet it to put the motor under a constant load, and put X quantity of each fuel in it, and see how long it runs for. Great video though, looking forward to seeing this series!
@Slider68
@Slider68 4 жыл бұрын
@@kleetus92 Another way that is often used is to place a white piece of cloth over the exhaust for a certain number of seconds while running under a specific load (typically wide open, at governed speed). You then compare how dark the white cloth becomes. I can't remember the exact spec but one of our old farm tractors even had images in the shop manual you were supposed to compare your "white cloth" to.

Curious why they're hard to get started? I got a somewhat rare (for the US) FB markerplace find of a 3.3hp water (hopper) cooled horizontal single cylinder Chinese "Chang Fa" style engine the other day, and the previous owner claimed he only ran it for a few minutes then let it sit ever since. Tag says manufactured in 2005. Other than having to pull the fuel pump and work it by hand to get it unstuck, it started after a few cranking attempts after fixing the fuel issue. Hand crank (not recoil) start, using compression release. Seems like a pretty durable unit.

@MittyNuke1 3 жыл бұрын
@@gideonkloosterman it’s a diesel horizontal Chinese R165 engine with hand crank start, rated for 3.3 or 3.4hp. I was starting it when it was maybe 60-70 degrees F out at the time so it’s possible it was easy due to that. I’ll find out soon enough how it works in the cold as it’s now getting pretty cold where I am. In January-February it can get down to about 0 F outside (at the lowest) even though I’ve been storing the engine in my basement which gets down to around 45-50 F in the coldest of winter. I recently ordered a 3kw permanent magnet alternator I plan to belt to the engine to experiment with building a homemade inverter generator, as I wanted something I can run off heating fuel. From what I understand, the smaller horizontal Chinese diesels use swirl chamber indirect injection while the larger (maybe 8 hp+) use direct injection as well as the counter-balance shaft.

@t4k3chfre
@t4k3chfre 4 жыл бұрын
Actually this is making the measurements differ from each other. Increased RPM increases horsepower. The "regular diesel" test run resulted in 8.5hp @ 2800RPM And the "hydro diesel" test run gave 8.83hp @ 2900RPM. If you would've increased the RPM to 2900 with the "regular diesel" you would've got around 8.80hp. Here's the equation: 8.5hp divided by 2800rpm = 0.0030357143. 0.0030357143 * 2900rpm = 8.80357147 hp. You can also do it the other way around: 8.83hp divided by 2900 = 0.0030448276. 0.0030448276 * 2800 = 8.52551728hp So "regular diesel" would theoretically give 8.803hp @2900RPM And "hydro diesel" would've theoretically given 8.525hp @2800RPM You can't do a test with different RPMs and think it doesn't affect horsepower, ask any professional dyno shop.
