I am warping up my small four shaft table loom ready for some weaving. I am warping front to back using a pretty quick warp post method. I the film you will see me taking the warp threads through the heddles using a straight draw. If you have never warped up a loom, this will give you a good idea as to what is involved, and why it is quite time consuming. Ideally I would also have put a selvedge each side, i.e. three or four warp threads which would run back to front, but not through the heddles, so that one gets neater edges.

What an elegant table loom. Not many generations ago, a little loom of some sort had a spot in many households - but that was before the advent of electronic mass communication. Without social networking, folk may have had longer attention spans.

What a great idea to have different colors of the string heddles. I use an old timber frame loom with string heddles and sometimes make threading errors because they are all the same color.

Great to see this being set up, and to read the fascinating comments that people are leaving! It will be interesting to see how stable that the loom is in action, as it seems to be a fairly tall design! Looking forward to the second film as others are! Thanks!

As I slowly transition from Rigid heddle to a small four shaft loom, this style of warping makes more sense to me then using a warping board then transferring the warp using the cross to keep everything in order. I'm definitely going to try this. And if I need a longer warp than my peg and table can provide, I can easily put a small warping board on the table next to the loom to get more distance. Love this!!

Interesting loom Harry. It has a modern heddle from a heddle loom as a beater and mounted at the top instead of the more common bottom mounting. I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with it. Good luck, weaving Is just as realaxing and theraputic as green woodwork and leatherwork.

Thank you for the video! I'm looking forward to seeing your next stage. A friend found me a similar loom, at a free store. It was missing the canvas (I still haven't figured out how to do that part), beater & reed, accessories, and had very rusted heddles. I'm currently refinishing and rebuilding, and have replaced the reed and heddles.

Dang, how many belts and wallets could have been made with the time warping that 'bitty loom? :-) There is a sewing notion "loop turning tool" used to turn fabric tubes inside out and pulling cordage through the tube for bag handles etc. It uses a hook and "floating" latch mechanism, is ~10" long, very inexpensive and easy to use. Similar to a baiting needle for boilies. I believe it would make a great tool for warping the loom. Your warping needle is good but it has no latch to close the eye. Have a look. It might be useful. I sew but I don't weave. You and I are a lot alike in having many diverse interests and not enough time for every one. I very much enjoy your videos. Have a great day sir.

Thanks Gerard, I was interested to see that sewing loop turning tool...looks pretty useful. I am enjoying making more wallets at the moment, but I do also enjoy some diversions. I think trying another craft gives insights into different techniques and ways of thinking but of course it is also a distraction! Thanks very much for your comment, very much appreciated. Rgds Harry

How many string heddles do I put on a heddle reed. I am buzy building myself a 48" table loom. But need to no how many heddles I will need per reed?
@harryrogers
@harryrogers 11 күн бұрын
@@amandahattingh1189 It really depends on what you are weaving and how many shafts are on your loom, and obviously the width. Look at what the commercial looms come with...like the Ashfords etc.

Hi Harry! How are you finding it using the rigid heddle as a reed? I have a very similar vintage loom to yours and mine is also missing a beater bar so I need to make something similar to what you’ve done. I’ll have to mount it differently I think as my loom has shaft strings (I don’t know the proper name yet lol) that go over to the side so a top mount like yours will probably interfere with that. My loom has a fabric width of 7.5”, so my options appear to be to use a rigid heddle like you’ve done which is 8”, or splash out on a stainless steel heddle and cut it down to size. Are you completely happy with the rigid heddle or would you prefer stainless steel? Cost wise the rigid heddle would be preferable as I could get 4 different DPI’s for the cost of one stainless steel, but if they’re an issue to use I’d rather start off with the stainless steel and slowly get more. It’s so great to see that someone has done what I need to do and succeeded!!

Most of this video is you talking about doing something you could have done if you stopped repeating yourself and did it. This is a ridiculously over complicated loom though - there's far easier methods.
