In my experience if you want keep a cherry it will die every time but if you want rid of it, it won't die for nothing. If you cut it down it sends up sprouts from the stump. If you dig it or pull it up it'll send up sprouts in a circle from the roots that broke off.

Nice work! Got to love those crazy rains! Hard to build things to withstand 3” in an hour. That tree might make it if he dumps some root stimulant and waters it heavily for the next month. No harm in trying to replant it. Have a good weekend!

Important part of transplanting a tree is to place stakes to support the tree as you rip up so many roots in the process that a strong wind can blow the tree over without them. The root zone of a tree extends to just past the drip edge of the leaf area so when you cut back to just around the trunk you have removed the majority of the roots and it is why you need support and to water as that area is now gone.

Any large parking area around here has to keep the water from running off and have a retention area that can be connected to the storm sewer with a small pipe. That tree is badly formed and probably should't have been planted in the first place.

I see what you mean about the tree. It had been so badly neglected that two suckers grew almost as thick as the main trunk. And the main trunk was so top heavy from lack of pruning, it was bent over like a question mark. The owner didn't care about that tree when it was growing, he doesn't care about it now, I'm sure.
