I've been on a Jimmy Herring kick lately, a truly great guitarist. But everytime I see Government Mule I wonder if they aren't my favorite band in the world. They play anything, with anyone, and shine.

I saw him live with the Dead in Orange County some years back and I was blown away by Jimmy’s playing and guitar tone. 1st song they played was Help on the way. My jaw hit the ground.

I was lucky enough to see The Aquarium Rescue Unit consisting of Colonel Bruce Hampton, Jimmy Herring, Jeff Sipe and Otiel Burrbridge, who still plays with Warren and did as an Allman Brother. Man, what shows they put on!

It really is great. I wish Gregg had allowed Derek and Warren to freely explore the music more, just like the Allman Bros did in their early days with Duane. Gregg wasn't really a fan of taking the songs way out from their normal, original progression all that much, and as a result, they ended up doing a lot of Type 1 jams (jams that more or less stick to the original chord progression) in their career after Duane. I certainly understand where Gregg was coming from, but man, had Derek and Warren, along with the rest of that incredible ABB band, been able to take it wherever they wanted to go....that would have been really awesome to see. This is a peek at what that might have looked like.

@@mallit I was listening to a lot of Massive Attack (among many others) when I first started playing bass. A lot of those grooves were the first to land firmly under my fingers. No bass on my YT channel yet, but maybe once I get a better audio setup! Thanks again for the Billy Cobham. You can bet I'll be checking out his catalogue

This is one of the hardest bass lines to play period. Even Lee Sklar, has a hard time with it. It's a carpel tunnel inducing mofo. Btw, nobody can play Jan Hammer like Jan Hammer and nobody else can do it like Tommy Bolin. They're all their own people!
