The best part of Jimmy is the way he thinks. Like Allan Holdsworth, he always surprises you and takes your breath away with a choice. Even a simple choice that catches you off guard. One of my hands-down, all-time faves. Yay, Jimmy!

Actually Guthries favorite modern guitarist is Derek Trucks. I'm sure he is Herring fan too. herring, holdsworth, govan, howe, henderson, huchings, kotzen (when he doesn't sing), lane, Allen Hinds all on the top of funky and tasty fusion chart.

this is a point of discussion. IMHO Jimmy H thinks in a different, almost opposite way to AH. Herring's Guitar Player columns show his 'jam band' ethos of maximising scale and pentatonic patterns over familiar (and unfamiliar) harmonies, with inside note choices to become as versatile as possible with as much soul as can be maintained. Then he adds a singing tone and great touch to his leads (hear that Indian Raga inspired meltdown at a dutch festival). AH made it a point (at leats later in his evolution) never to play a pattern, always to improvise without cliches (a difficult task) and spend a lot of the time as outside the harmony as he could get. Both are great players of course, but AH was next level (hear his Red alert solo at yoshis...).. peace and love

Jimmy Herring is definitely one of the most soulful guitarist alive. His feel, phrasing, tone, is so absolutely perfect. Every note has purpose... so lyrical. Whether he plays slow or fast, he gives me chills. He's influenced my playing and will always inspire me. There's many really great guitarist, and there is no best... that's completely ridicules. To my ear, Jimmy deserves mention to be in say... the top 25 real masters of guitar (and that's a damn big statement)

Love Jimmy's ability to get that slide effect w/o a slide.
@Diax13245 жыл бұрын
As a guitar player... It is REALLY HARD. You have to think as if you are a slide player, which you are not. Just beautiful playing. I can emulate these sounds, just not like Jimmy.
@bizza125 жыл бұрын
Jimmy uses a Hughes & Kettner Tube Factor which is what I believe is providing this effect in conjunction with the guitar.
@moreorlesslikeso4 жыл бұрын
@@bizza12 Although the sound may contribute to the impression, I'm convinced the secret is in the playing itself - and it's actually quite hard to do, just like Diax1324 wrote. There even used to be an older video from some guitar clinic here on YT where Jimmy demonstrates the basics of this technique himself. I've also seen little bits of something in this vein from Tom Bukovac and (I think) from Andy Wood...
@bizza124 жыл бұрын
@@moreorlesslikeso If you can find that I would love to see it as I've never heard another guitarist use this "effect". I'm wondering if its a variation on getting that tone harmonic sound when you use a pick but are muting the strings with your fingertips at the same time.
@moreorlesslikeso4 жыл бұрын
@@bizza12 I did some digging in my KZbin history and came up with these: - Andy Wood guitar series The Woodshed ep4. Sound like Derek Trucks and Duane Allman without a slide!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqmakqhon9eKg9E - Corona Lessons volume 3, Tom Bukovac, southern harmony & faux slide kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6K9mmqNrNN1h8U - Jimmy Herring: Jam Session #6 Guitar Lesson kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJ-1nJ2EpbqLnJY (the technique demonstrated by the man himself!) and - Jimmy Herring: Jam Session #5 Guitar Lesson kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6ezd6uunrqYZqM (which is more about those "Holdsworthian" bends - without using a whammy bar)

I think the best thing to improve our musicality and improv, is to listen to quality music massively, hunt the greatest... I'm currently listening to jazz masters like Charlie Christian, Howard Roberts, Jimmy Rainey... to more I listen and love them, the more that quality starts to emerge in my playing. I try to fall in love with music, then let the music play me.
