Hey there MRM, Ironically, the song, that perhaps gave Zevon his greatest "pop" success was written in 15 minutes as a kind of a joke. He also hated "Sweet Home Alabama" to the point he satirised in another of his better songs, "Play it all night long". My own favourite Zevon song is the sweetly meloncholic "Hasten down the wind" also covered by Linda Ronstandt. Zevon also famously documented the making of his last album as he was dying of cancer, which gives a spooky ring to his cover of the Dylan classic "Knocking on Heaven's Door" from his final album.
@Neaptide1844 жыл бұрын
The song was written in a diner, each of the three rock greats sitting around the table wrote a line on a napkin, dropped it on the table, then the next, then the next. They took the napkins to a home studio and that is the third take. It has the shortest production time for any top 40 song in history.

Two of my other favorites by Warren are “sentimental hygiene“ and probably his most beautiful song “searching for a heart“. You will not go wrong with either of those. Just to complete the list for Warren: “nighttime in the switching yard“; “tenderness on the block“; and “excitable boy“, another upbeat tune with funny lyrics, like werewolves of London.

Warren Zevon made a lot of appearances on David Letterman's talk shows. Whenever Paul Schaffer was unavailable, Warren would fill in for him on the piano. Then, when Warren was dying, David Letterman dedicated an entire show to him-- he performed several songs and talked to Letterman in between. It's the only time Letterman ever dedicated the entire show to a single guest.

Warren was great... and very funny. He wrote MANY hit songs for other artists (including Prince). I remember his final appearance on Letterman (he was the show's ONLY guest). Warren was nearing the end of his battle with cancer and the show could be viewed as a "goodbye". That's where he made his famous quote about living/dying: "Enjoy every sandwich". Speaking of Letterman, I would guess Warren was one of his favorite guests with Tom Waits being the other one. Warren had one more song left in him before passing (and he recorded it at home because he was too weak to leave the house). It's "Keep Me In Your Heart" (yes, there's a video... and it's sad). To think, most people know of him because of a song he wrote as a goof. Warron Zevon was a GREAT talent, may he RIP. Ty, please do yourself a favor and check out some of his other songs.

I know Warren Zevon wrote this as a lark after watching the movie 'Werewolf of London' but I had always thought the song was referring to someone who had a very put-together disguise (like a Wallstreet businessman) which covered up a dark side that they kept hidden most of the time. Even though I now know the song was written as a lark, I still think it fits what I originally thought the song was about.
@StormyPeak5 жыл бұрын
From the first time I heard this song back when it first came out... I always thought it was referring to corrupt business men. Those with a ton of money, who dress nice, have manicured nails, styled hair, (it was the 70's and even young business men back then wore their hair a little longer). So the Werewolves of London were those social climbers who would use and toss away anyone who could help them gain another step up the corporate ladder.

That makes perfect sense. Never though about it that. They actually had access to the queen, too. :)

This does have very similar music to Sweet Home Alabama. There was some legal battle berween Waren Zevon (pronounced Zee-Von) and Lenerd Skynard who sang sweet home Alabama. I don't remember which way it went. I'm nearly positive that it was Leonard Skynard trying to sue Zevon because of copyright issues for the music. Zevon ebded up winning the suit because his music to this song was different enough that was ruled no copyright infringement.

Sad story about this song. You probably recognize the opening riff because Kid Rock used it for that summer song he did. Warren Zevon was dying of cancer. Kid Rock asked him for permission to sample the song. Zevon said No because he didn't want other "artists" to sample his work. Warren died shortly thereafter and less than a month later scummy Kid Rock went ahead and used the song anyway.

Warren Zevon does comedy songs but he actually had a good band. I was in high school when this came out. I though this song was so funny. My brother and I used to laugh at the lyrics, i.e., "I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand." And, "He'll rip your lungs out, Jim." And, "And his hair was perfect." You should do "Monster Mash" this week. It's another funny song. Hey, Ty, could you do the song "Traffic in My Mind" by the Osmond Brothers? It part of an album based on their religious beliefs called "The Plan." The Osmonds are Mormons. Instead of going on their year-long outreach mission, the church decided they'd have more impact through their music so allowed them to do this album instead. All of the songs are based on God (not love songs to women though some could be interpreted that way). It's a great song. It's sung by the Osmond Brothers' lead singer, Merrill Osmond. Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2XKipSkhJ16ipo Another good song on this album is "Going Home." Also sung my Merrill. Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIS3ZYGCnphkhrM It's anyone's interested, this video is 10-minutes long and shows the band singing a medley of some of the songs on the album. The song stands on its own very well, but to really get it, you have to watch the 1935 movie "Werewolf of London," starring Henry Hull as the most unintentionally hammy werewolf ever. The song does borrow quite a bit from the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic "Sweet Home Alabama which came out a few years earlier, around 1973-74. "Werewolves...." was a top ten hit in 1978. Warren Zevon was extremely well-respected within the music industry, but "Werewolves of London" was his only really big hit song.
