Romania is not a member of the Schengen Agreement which makes it a great place for a non Schengen home base.
The Schengen Agreement has ruined the dream for millions around the world to slow travel through Europe. Gone are the days of crossing from Spain to France and resetting your clock in a neighboring country. If your country is not a member of Schengen you have to look at these 26 countries as one, an American can only spend 90 days out of 180 days between all 26 countries. Romania and a handful of European countries including the UK are options to live in to reset your Schengen clock. If you’re an American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealander, or from South Africa a Non-Schengen country like Romania should be in consideration for your investment budget. Even if you’re not choosing residency in Romania, it’s a great place to live 90 out of 180 days if you need to leave the Schengen. There are some residency options available through a few Schengen countries, but most of these require €250,000-€1,000,000 invested in or paid to the country. Italy has some options that are vaguely written and subjective to local decisions that can be inconsistent.

Does gaining residency in Romania (now that is is part of the Schengen zone as of this year) does this allow you to travel into other Schengen countries during your time of residency eg: we have spent 90 days in Schengen zone already say from Jan to March and you get temporary residency from April for 12 months in Romania can we go holiday in Greece for 2 weeks May, come back to Romania, then holiday in Spain for 2 weeks in June, come back to Romania, go to Italy for a week July ? Or do you have to stay in Romania the whole time and what happens when you leave Romania - do you loose residency and if going into another Schengen country do they consider that time in Romania as being in Schengen already and now overstaying ?
@WarrenJulieTravel
@WarrenJulieTravel 6 ай бұрын
With residency in a Schengen country you gain Schengen access, which is a big plus to obtaining it. You may have requirements to be in the country a minimum amount of months per year depending on the country and residency type.

It was a bit hard to tell from this interview, but it sounds like there are only 2 residency visa options available to people who want to be able to stay in Romania for more than 90 days out of every 180 day period: 1) start a company in Romania or 2) be over 65 and overstay your tourist visa. I don't think I heard any other options to obtain a residency visa. Is this accurate? Also, it sounds like with both of these options, you are required to physically be in Romania for 10 months out of the year. Am I understanding that correctly? If so, that's a significant physical presence requirement, especially as a retired person who wants to travel. I guess the Romanian government really wants you to reside there if they are going to give you a residency visa, lol.
@WarrenJulieTravel
@WarrenJulieTravel 5 ай бұрын
There are additional residency programs, but we focused on these two. The company option is the easiest option. You are not required to stay in Romania for 10 months per year. I know he said you could get residency if you were over 65 and retired, and overstayed the 90 days... but what about if you are on Social Security and maybe 62? That would clearly show you are 'retired'. And if not, are there countries where you could do it this way? I would love to travel Europe, but 90 days is way too fast, especially since it's less expensive to do slow travel.

Here’s the reply: For the immigration procedure, in Bucharest, they do not request proof of health insurance in the first year (state health insurance), but you can make it if you want. However, there are a few immigration offices that request it in the first year (Sibiu county), therefore it depends on the budget and needs of the client.
