It was a wood/bamboo fort which the walls are essentially rafts that can just float down rivers and them prop up with timber beams that can also float down river. I think stone reinforcement was built later and the outer wooden wall taken down as material for the keep. Not sure wat the timeline was in Saito conquest tho. Could have happened after Saito conceded.
@yaylollerp66856 жыл бұрын
Yes, I thought that was what happened as well. What I learned was that he actually did assemble it in a day, but the parts were built offsite and assembled later. I also heard that the original building was very flimsy, and had to be later reinforced, but it was the main shock that a building had suddenly appeared that counted.

3:17 the decision to send Hideyoshi in to bribe the Saitō’s allies and speed-build the fort shows a strange mix of humility and pride on Nobunaga’s part. He knew he was Japan’s greatest military mind, but realized that the task at hand required a different skillset to his own speciality. It’s an interesting combination of grace and resource management skills.
@michaeldonahue10095 жыл бұрын
Actually, Hideyoshi's castle was indeed "put up" in a single night. He pre-fabricated the components at several nearby building sites, shipped them in with rollers, sledges and teams of draft animals, then erected the structure overnight using the pre-assembled sections.

About the fortress toyotomi "build in one night". First its not a forteress you would think with stone walls and else, in fact fences were enough. Second, Toyotomi did gather pre-builded material to the site and only the assemblage of the castle was made in one night. One of the famous strategy of Hideyoshi was also to display a single side of a castle in the sight of enemy fortress in order it look like an entire fortress was already built, and he used that too on Inabayama. Toyotomi main skills were not diplomacy but strategy on castle sieges.

I see we're nearly to the tragic act that ensures Nobunaga's reputation as being "evil" in the eyes of every video game designer and anime writer in Japan... Shame he didn't have the political acumen to work the religious angle as well as he did the military one. He might have fared a lot better. Shame about the giant golden Buddha too... Lost to history.
@AuntieInari10 жыл бұрын
***** Oh I'm aware that Nobunaga didn't hate the Buddhists, and it was a military decision, but since Japan's primary faiths are Shinto and Buddhism, his destruction of the temple is the reason he was vilified by pretty much everyone who used him in a popular work of entertainment in modern times. Had he been able to (as some of his contemporaries did) exploit the religious angle and gain the backing of the monks, he'd have left a completely different legacy, and would likely be the hero of the very works in which he is currently cast as the enemy.
@Necroskull38810 жыл бұрын
***** There was also the concern that Japanese Christians would be loyal to a foreign Pope, and the fact that the Portugese King kept asking Jesuit priests whether an invasion of Japan would be viable or not. Historically, Eastern civilization has actually been pretty accepting of foreign religions, but they're paranoid and react violently when they think that foreign cultures are subverting the populace.
@Borderose10 жыл бұрын
I'd say Nobunaga did have considerable political chops of his own (you don't get to conquer most of Japan at the time with just force alone). He was just forced to make a decision in regards to a very real military nuisance--i.e the warrior monks of Mt. Hiei. Those guys were everywhere serving as mercenaries to anyone who can pay for their services and basically gave Nobunaga a huge military headache. That, plus they were really against a lot of his policies and his rise to power. Especially since Nobunaga never was a guy with any deep attachment to religion, and most probably saw the monks as a regressive, stuffy, hypocritical institution that tied Japan to a past he had relatively little interest with. Heck, that might have been one of the things that made him friendly towards the Christian missionaries--while he wasn't a Christian himself, he liked that Christian rituals and prayers didn't take nearly as long as Buddhist ones which Nobunaga found tedious and boring.

In history it's always interesting how chance intervenes, like fate, turning the tide to someone's favour. It was never just genius that made a victor, but interesting circumstance (often again and again.)

1:58 That Pokemon reference is kind of funny, considering that there's an actual Pokemon spinoff game, called Pokemon Conquest, starring a lot of the people talked about in this series. And Nobunaga can actually evolve in it. Not into Nobunagatron, unfortunately, but he does get the ability to form perfect links with Zekrom and Rayquaza, and a Warrior Skill that lets his Pokemon move twice in one turn, so still pretty cool.

I find all these names pretty hard to remember, probably because I'm so unfamiliar with the culture and history of the far east (except for XX century). It would be really cool if you talked a bit about WW1 outside of Europe.

***** Oh, I see. I think I heard them say something about fighting outside of Europe in their first WW1 episode which is why I mentioned it.
@ViceDellos10 жыл бұрын
Williamz there was a lot of fighting outside of europe the continent, but this involved mostly colonies not different countries. also the ww1 series was only about how the war came to be, not how it played out. to be honest I would love to hear more about is aswell though... but i guess I just want more extra hisroty it's so awesome and i really like this series, because i watched the nobunaga concerto anime earlier this year, but didnt know any of the history so it was kinda confusing
