Spoilers are *not* primarily used to slow the plane down aerodynamically, although they do increase drag, but that part is relatively minimal at low speeds (like when landing)! Their function is to spoil" lift of the wings, so the aircraft will remain on the ground - that is when they are used in the auto mode upon landing - and thus transfer the weight of the aircraft onto the landing gear and help with the mechanical braking. They are also used to increase the sinkrate of a plane *without* the loss of speed when in flight mode. You may be confusing spoilers with airbrakes here, which increase drag without compromising lift. Reverse thrust also dont let the "engines run backwards" but rather deflect the thrust forward. While on older generation jet engines (turbojets and first generation turbofans) this was mostly done by deploying bucket like devices into the hot and cool part of the exhaust gasses, most high-bypass turbofans now only deflect the cold (bypass) part of an engine forward.

Hi Ian, many thanks for sharing this interesting video. It'd be interesting to see what the corrected "safe" software now does. BTW there's a typo in the video description, "... was a causal fact_p_r".

What a bucket of crap. Does anybody really believe that a tire will hydroplane with 90 tons of airplane sitting on it?!?! At best, the turn sensor was broken. This is just the airline and manufacturers teaming up to blame the pilots as usual. “They should have noticed the wind changed direction...” Really?!?! At night in the rain they were gonna catch a less than 90 degree shift in wind direction, when the airport officials themselves didn’t even notice it?

What you are writing is “a bucket of crap”. The Airplane weight has nearly no influence on Aquaplaning. It is a combination of total contact area of the wheel on the ground and the aircraft’s speed plus the amount of water present in the contact area of the tire and the ground. You get everything to aquaplan, it is just a matter of speed. If the water is no longer able to to make its way through the grooves of the tire it will form a wave kind water buildup in front of the tire and then the tire starts to reduce its wheelspeed and the slower it gets the more water builds up in front of the tire and finally it starts to swim and even comes to a compleet stand still! Also the aircraft might have a ground speed of 130 knots, the tire has no rpm any more. With the tire not turning, for the whole system is one important factor not given to activste the ground spoiler speedbrakes and reverse thrust. All passenger aircraft need these 2 conditions:: shock struts compressed and wheel speed greater x knots ( x is different from manufacturer to manufacturer) From ONE landing gear! Not like here 2.
