Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia (1968)

On August 20, 1968, the Soviet Union led Warsaw Pact troops in an invasion of Czechoslovakia to crack down on reformist trends in Prague. Although the Soviet Union's action successfully halted the pace of reform in Czechoslovakia, it had unintended consequences for the unity of the communist bloc.

I'm Bulgarian and I know a guy from my hometown(Yambol) who was deployed in Czechoslovakia at the time. From what he told me basically he and the rest of our countrymen just stayed in a bunch of barracks there and ate soup all day while the Soviets did the fighting. I know another guy who's been deployed in Afghanistan as a part of a NATO mission. He had a similar experience.

My grandpa was in yugoslav military service at the begining of invasion he was sent to Koprivnica (Today Croatia) where he was one of the 11 officers thats goal was to train locals to defend the country from posible invasion from Hungary he was only Croat other 10 were Serbs locals said when he arrived "You are the only one of us" they ment that he was only croat among officers they dug front and one night they got drunk all 11 with locals one of the best times of his life he said.

My dad said that he saw huge soviet tank columns when they were on way to Czechia from Krakow. Local people traded with Soviet soldiers. Gave them etiquete from beer for cigarettes. Russians believed it is polish banknotes.

East Germany did not participate in the invasion They had mobilized but at the last moment decided it would be bad for the first German military operation since WWII to be against Czechoslovakia Interestingly enough the actual first operation post WWII had them reprise the roll of previous German bad guys, the hessians, to suppress a tax revolt in Albania in 1998, along with Italy of all nations
