Warsaw Rising: Europe's Next Cool Capital

From the rubble of war, Warsaw has rebuilt itself into a seriously cool capital city. There's a lot to love here already and it keeps growing and changing - just look at the skyline! Development and newness everywhere you look. In this video we visit a lot of Warsaw highlights, starting with the Warsaw Rising Museum which is dedicated to the 1944 uprising by the Polish resistance army. Then we cross the river to the Praga District which has the buzz of becoming the 'Berlin of the 90s' due to cheap rent and abundant artists. In Praga, we hit the Polish Vodka Museum and do a vodka tasting. For lunch we go to the Soho part of Praga to one of Mateusz Gessler's restaurants called Warszawa Wschodnia. Nearby is the Neon Museum which has been called 'the most instagram-able place in Warsaw.' After that we take the train to Łódź where we check in at the amazing PURO Hotel with the best view in the city. Just in time for dinner, we head for the OFF Piotrkowksa area which has been described to us as the 'little Portland' of Łódź. The night ends with a parade of late night...rollerbladers.

@@EileenAldis here's a story for you. i've shared it a couple of times recently, and the story comes from a man I worked with at a gig some years back: His grandfather fought in the uprising, and when the museum opened, he decided to go. In the weapons section, a tour guide was describing a german MG-42 machine gun (which fires 1200 rounds per minute - that's 20 rounds every second). The grandfather said, that during the uprising, he had a gun like that, so the guide asked him "how did it feel to have such firepower in your hands?", and his reply was "I don't know, lady, I only had 18 bullets".

I've watched many videos by 'visitors to Poland' but you two have become my favourites (subbed)! Btw, you may not have noticed, but in the wall above the shrine at 7:00 are real bullet holes from WW2. More than likely Poles were executed there by Germans, hence the shrine against that particular wall - the plaque says "Mother Mary, Pray for us" dated 1943. It was common practice for German soldiers to drag entire families out of their houses and flats, line them up against the walls outside and shoot them. Then later, people erected shrines to their memory, and you can still find them all over Poland. Oh Eileen, regarding Vodka, I don't like it either (even though I'm Polish) but I think you'll like Polish Honey Vodka, called Krupnik (pronounced Kroop~neek)... it's actually sweet. Try it, as it doesn't taste anything like straight clear Vodka. But make sure the barman sets light to it (yes a flame) - it's much better warm than cold. Nazdrowie 😊

The illustration on the wall shows a sculpture at the Puro Hotel. This is a sculpture by Katarzyna Kobro. Katarzyna Kobro was a Polish avant-garde sculptor. She is a prominent representative of the constructivist movement in Poland. She had a tragic life. Most of the sculptures burned in the fireplace to warm themselves and the child during the war.

Im glad to see it there are more and more people coming to learn about our sad history, maybe people from west Europe will start looking at us not only as a cheap uneducated working force but nation which suffered like no other in Europe :( because of dirty politics and wars

you are being treated like you allow to treat yourself, to be honest most of the polish workforce in the western countries ARE uneducated, cheap, drinking people. Not all of them of course, but this is the stereotype that was built for was, it didn't came from nowhere. And I think we should end that "martyrs of the Europe" crap. We'll never grow if we are stuck in history. Lesson learned, let's move on. How many generations will hate Germans because of that? BTW hate them, but also go there to earn money, because what is logic, right?

@@PropertyOfK that is fact not all people are educated and not all know foreign languages. But many of them are forced to live abroad because our own goverment cannot look after own citizens. I believe everyone deserves for normal life and choice is quite simple. If we know we will be paid fairly abroad why should we suffer only because we would stay in our own country and not get paid properly for our job. I wouldnt call someone uneducated only because they dont know properly foreign languages, many young polish citizens decided to leave Poland after studies. Btw we earning this money by working in conditions which nobody would agree to work. Fact is stereotypes are not coming from nowhere. But we shouldnt also forget our past and how we were treated by West Europe or by Russians. Personally if you asking me... I would never live in Germany because of second world war.

it's not a parade of rollerskaters, but an event called "nightskating", which I think originated in Warsaw. Most of the main streets get closed for the event - I believe it takes place once w week during summer :) nice videos from Poland, I appreciate the fact that you actually dive deeper into the history, it's really important and takes the sightseeing to another level. I love the way you portray Warsaw and Łódź! :) I think it's the first time in history that those cities are being appreciated and it's about time! If you would like to get a glimpse of how Łódź was like where all those factories and palaces were being built, I recommend seeing Ziemia Obiecana (The Promised Land), an Oscar nominated film by Andrzej Wajda :) and don't forget to visit the Muzeum Sztuki with its famous Neoplastic Room - it was the first museum of modern art in Europe - opened in 1931 :)

Fabulous video, guys! You covered a lot of ground in this video, so it's hard to find one standout. The images of Warsaw in ruins after WWII reminds me of Ypres, Belgium after WWI: the ancient city reduced to piles of rubble where buildings had been, and larger piles where larger buildings had been. I walked away from the museum feeling similarly affected by the devastation, and have never forgotten it. Interesting that Praga remained more intact, and I enjoyed the beautiful chapel dedicated to Mary, and the outdoor market. It had a very grassroots feeling. Thanks to your awesome videos, I'm adding to our places we need to visit!

Warsaw Sawwar. I have been to that museum its crazy large and one of my friends dad is one of the guys that's pictured on the wall where you can pick up a phone and listen to him speak, he is a survivor of the uprising and is still alive today.

I visited that Museum in 2017. What the video missed talking about although I saw a glimpse of it was the replica of the sewers the Polish insurgents used during the 63 day uprising. I walked through it despite my mild form of claustrophobia and got a sense of what it felt like to move through them while the Germans tossed down grenades. Our guide told us that the week before my visit a large overweight tourist got stuck in it. Anyway, as an Australian of part Polish descent I have visited Poland six times over the last few decades and am amazed how much it has changed since the communist period. Thanks for your videos.

Haha, it was never healthier to drink vodka than water :D It's just a toast, so basically a wish you make before drinking. So when you say "na zdrowie" it means "I hope we all drinking here will be in good health". You can be more specific and toast "zdrowie gospodarzy" (to the hosts health) by which they're of course obliged to raise "zdrowie gości" (to the guests health). It's a drinking game of sorts :P P.S. Don't worry, nobody really likes vodka, that's why we gulp it down in one quick sip :) It's drunk for the effect not for the taste. I'm always rolling with laughter inside when I see Westerners sipping vodka out of a whiskey glass as if it was something to savour :D :D :D P.S.2 "Spółdzielnia" means "co-op" :) P.S.3 I am still charmed by the fact you know how to say Polish words. Even that Warszawa Wschodnia sounded pretty decent (it was the closest at first try :P)

Praga is Warsaw's Bronx...but it is getting gentrified quite intensively now, but even few years ago nobody in his /her right mind would have considered even going there. This was a very rough part of the city.

How does Warsaw compares to the rest of Poland in terms of infrastructure. I've been to szeczin and was surprised how bad the tram infrastructure looked like. Bumpy tracks.

Szczecin is a tier 3 Polish city. I myself am Polish and was appalled by how backwards Szczecin seemed. I felt like I was moved 10-15 years back in time. I'd say Warsaw is pretty good inasmuch as it has a metro system. Even though I've had better experiences with public transport elsewhere on the whole, Warsaw is in a completely different league than Szczecin. All in all, you shouldn't be worried. The public transport is more than enough for touristic purposes.

Poland was the very first cube of domino which made Soviet block collapsed. Ronald Reagan the president of US said once that is much more effective to send a single printer to Poland than 100 Stinger missiles to Afghanistan. And he was right. About Warsaw - I did not like this city from first view in 1980's. It was gray and dirty. Now I love this city because it never give up and day by day become more pleasant and comfortable for people who live here and those who are guests. Warsaw means 'invincible city'.

In following in 1944 - the all the city itself, with 50.000 AK soldiers against the same number of Werhmacht and Nazi forces. It took over two months instead of week planned and fallen apart due to Stalins order to not help the fighting allies by the soviet Red Army standing... in the city (!) - at the east part of Warsaw, in Praga district (6:00) on the eastern side of city's river bank.
