I would recommend ear plugs for Bundy and yourself. I compete in mounted shooting. Also the black powder has more smoke than a live shell. Horses need desensitising to the smoke too. Have fun! :)

Very good explanation. I don't know if it's possible, but looked like Bundy figured out the four whip cracks then one gunshot pattern by the third time through.

This horse trainer, very famous in his time (and still revered in some circles today!), poured his whole lifetime of horse training knowledge and experience into a massive, fully illustrated, 8 volume course. These 8 books dld.bz/8htbooks cover every aspect of Horse training - from what you must know before you begin the first lesson right through to teaching your horse sophisticated tricks!

Thanks for demonstrating this I was always wondering myself how horses get used to or react to shooting noise.

Wow that was super interesting. I wonder if the police use a similar method when desensitising their horses to gunfire.

I boarded at a barn where we had mounted police, and they did use a whip to simulate gunfire almost every time they worked their horses and it was LOUD. It doesn't sound impressive in the video, but it's very loud in person. A lot of horses would freak out (obviously they didn't do this when non-police horses were in the arena) but the police horses would always just be relaxing with a leg cocked. Of course these horses weren't in training anymore. Most mounted police units have their own individual preference for breed of horse and training method, but I think using the whip to start is very common.

Ive noticed this in Rdr2, when you first get a horse it gets spooked by gunfire. But after a while ya horse isnt even phased unless its actually shot.

This is amazing I'm just getting into ww2 reenacting and I am doing a cav impression, but the problem is I have no idea how to make a whip sound like that lol. Is there anything I can do to substitute for the sound of a whip? I do have some not so hot blanks and I have red tip blanks that sounds like a live round would that work?

Hi warwick.. I love your video's and methodes and hope to join a clinic of you in the future, but for now: I have a horse, thats afraid of only a few things... But the worst, Cows She wont come close to one and tries to run away, when i am on a trailride i'm not Always in the position to get her to work away from the cows and rest near them, because i am on a road... I'm at the point i wanna work on this problem, because now i have done a lot of groundwork and trust under saddle. Do you have a clue how i can help my horse not to react so fermly on the cows? Thanks

This is a serious question, would you recommend doing this to get a horse ready for gun fire in a reenactment?
@tracyjohnson5023
@tracyjohnson5023 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but then you have to go to shooting without the whip heads up. Make sure to train with black powder as it has LOTS more smoke. There's lots of smoke and bangs at re-enactments as you probably know. I'd get my horse comfortable and listening to you in groups too

My horse runs around like a maniac if we target shoot or do fireworks on our property. He actually broke out on the fourth of July. I wouldn't even want to be holding him on a lead when gun goes off (he'd probably try to pull back and run away). I'm not sure where to start with him. He's definitely not just going to get used to it as his reactions seem to be getting worse. He's good with a whip but I'm not sure what the next step should be. Let's say I have my husband fire a round 150 feet away. He would flip out. Then what? It's not like desensitizing him to a tarp where I can give him relief by taking it away or giving him a break because the gunshot is already over. I thought about having my husband shoot right before I give him grain so he associates gunshot with food but I am not sure how far I can take that idea.

So he is perfect with a loudly cracking whip ?
@erinlempkowski7969
@erinlempkowski7969 8 жыл бұрын
My whip isn't very loud, but if I go and start cracking it by him he will sometimes act nervous and then settle down to perfect pretty quickly, or else he'll be perfect right away depending on his mood. He is one of those Arabs where things take a very long time to really stick in his brain, but he tries hard to please. I think I might need a louder whip to work on this.
@WarwickSchiller
@WarwickSchiller 8 жыл бұрын
When you say "he will sometimes act nervous" with the whip, that tells me he is not perfect with that, so of course gunfire would bother him.
