Charlotte the Laundry Maid shows you how she did the laundry at St Johns House. She pumps the water, makes the soap jelly, thumps the washing and dries it out with the mangle. If using this video with your class there are suitable places you can pause and discuss what you have seen with the children.

They used the blue because it muted out the yellow ting the clothes had from soaps and in some cases urine

Our washing goes out on clothes line or dried inside on an air dryer

I was a laundry maid for a casino hotel in 1999.

I'd take my shoes off, rinse my feet, lift my dress up and stomp on the laundry with my bare feet.

Instead of: “Only girls could be laundry maids in Victorian times.” It is more correct - better - to put it thus: “In Victorian times, only girls could be laundry maids.”
