Charlotte the Laundry Maid shows you how she did the laundry at St Johns House. She pumps the water, makes the soap jelly, thumps the washing and dries it out with the mangle. They used the blue because it muted out the yellow ting the clothes had from soaps and in some cases urine

Instead of: “Only girls could be laundry maids in Victorian times.” It is more correct - better - to put it thus: “In Victorian times, only girls could be laundry maids.”
